The 10 Best Vegan Meal Kit Delivery Subscriptions – 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards

Marisa Haber
ByMarisa HaberMar 9, 2022 | 7 comments

Vegan meal delivery services can make sticking to a plant-based diet much easier (and quite a bit more delicious). If you’re tired of simple salads, switching to a meal kit makes sense — the services allow you to enjoy gourmet-inspired recipes without spending a ton of time in the kitchen (and the ready-to-eat meal services add even more convenience).

With that in mind, we’ve collected several of the best vegan meal kits available online. A quick note to keep in mind while shopping: While many meal prep services have vegan options, we’re interested in the subscriptions that focus on animal-free products — strict vegan diets can be time-consuming, and well-curated meal deliveries can make life much more convenient when you’re eating ethically.

Every year, we ask our readers to share their top recommended subscriptions of all types. Then we ask our experts to share what they know about each subscription to make it easy for you to know which subscription is right for you. Below, you’ll find our insights for shopping Vegan meal kit subscription boxes and see readers’ top choices for plant-based, nourishing food subscriptions.

What To Look For When Shopping for Vegan Meal Subscriptions

Here are a few excellent reasons to try a plant-based meal kit and features to look for when shopping around:

  • Consider subscriptions that may lower your carbon footprint. By switching to a plant-based diet, you’re already making an ecologically conscious choice, and by skipping the grocery store, you’re making even more of an impact. On average, meal kits result in 33 percent lower carbon emissions than meals made from grocery store purchases.
  • Make sure it can be customized to meet your dietary needs. Food subscription services often have gluten-free, nut-free, and all-organic options (wherever possible, we’ve provided that information in our list).
  • Find a box that helps you avoid food waste. Each year, about 30-40 percent of the U.S. food supply is wasted. By structuring your diet around meal kits or ready-to-eat vegan meals, you can do your part to reduce that figure.
  • Look for brands that help you explore new foods. Services like Purple Carrot and Green Chef (discussed below) feature ingredients that you might not be able to find at your local retailer — and since you’re ordering from a vegan-friendly menu, you won’t have to search ingredient lists for hidden animal products.

Our Picks for the Best Vegan Meal Delivery Services

Read on for our reader’s recommendations for the best vegan meal kit subscription boxes currently available. If we missed anything, drop us a comment. If you’ve tried one of these services, be sure to leave a quick review (even if you had a poor experience — your review can help other readers avoid subscription remorse).

When it comes to nutrition, taste, and visual appeal, Sakara really does deliver. All that said, it might be the most expensive meal subscription I’ve ever sampled. -Lindsey, MSA Reviewer

9. Mosaic Foods

Chef-Prepared Vegan Meals at a Fair Price

Mosaic frozen plant-based meals.

Image from our review.

What This Vegan Meal Subscription Delivers

Mosaic offers both vegan and vegetarian recipes, so you’ll need to spend a bit more time curating your order; if that’s a deal-breaker, this probably isn’t the service for you. With that said, their vegan dishes are some of the most delicious ready-to-eat meals we’ve tried.

The meals feature fresh produce and hearty grains. They’re flash-frozen, so you’ll still taste the freshness after you pop the dish into the microwave (with pretty much all of the frozen meals on this list, we’ll note that reheating in a conventional oven will give you the best possible flavors).

Mosaic meals can be stored in the freezer for 3+ months. They take about 5 minutes to prep in the microwave, so this is an excellent option for office workers and anyone else who needs a convenient prep-free option.

All of Mosaic’s meals are free from artificial ingredients and chemical preservatives. With dishes like golden milk and blackberry oats, peanut tofu bowls, and tangy Thai stir fry, Mosaic has plenty of variety. It’s also ideal for weight management: Each box contains 8 delicious meals ranging between 400-600 calories, so while they’re filling, they deliver balanced nutrition.

The downside — which we mentioned briefly above — is that Mosaic isn’t purely vegan. You’ll find a bunch of vegetarian options on their menu, and if you let Mosaic pick your orders, you might receive meals with animal products. To avoid that, you’ll need to check your order prior to every shipment, but the company’s online menu clearly indicates which meals are vegan.

Pros

  • Frozen meals give you more leeway with how long you can wait to make them.
  • Packaging can be easily recycled after use.
  • Perfect meal plan for single households.

Cons

  • Not explicitly vegan meals.
  • Doesn't ship to all states.

What Our Readers Say:

"The vegetarian meals I tried were some of the best, most filling lunches I’ve had, packed with plant protein and fresh-tasting vegetables I felt good about eating." - Emily, MSA reviewer

There’s also a weight-loss option; select this option, and all three of your meals will total 1,200 calories. All Veestro meals are organic, plant-based, and free from dairy and preservatives. They also offer gluten-free options.

Veestro is one of the more expensive options on this list, but the goal here is total diet management, so the high price is justified — if you’re looking for a no-nonsense service that delivers everything you’ll need for a nutritious diet, you’ve found it. Orders are customizable, and you can skip a week or cancel anytime without penalty.

Factors We Considered When Reviewing These Vegan Subscriptions

Maintaining a strict vegan diet isn’t easy, and we hope that these services help you meet your dietary goals. We considered dozens of factors when evaluating options, relying on help from our readers to get accurate information about each subscription.

Some of the factors we considered when ranking this list:

  • Convenience - The primary purpose of a food subscription is to make meal planning easier. That means different things to different people — some folks don’t mind spending half an hour preparing a meal, but others are looking for ready-to-eat options. We included a variety of subscriptions, so regardless of your lifestyle, you should be able to find something that works for you.
  • Price and Overall Value - Meal deliveries can be expensive, but they can also save you time and money. Many of the prep-at-home services featured above offer a lower overall price than what you’d pay at the grocery store for the same ingredients. For the ready-to-eat kits, we chose options that were reasonably priced, but we threw in a few gourmet options for readers who are willing to spend extra.
  • Variety - Ideally, you’ll be able to use your vegan meal subscription for years to come. Of course, if you’re eating the same 6 or 7 foods for every single meal, you’ll start looking for alternatives, so we chose services that have enough variety to keep you coming back. We prioritized menus that used a range of different ingredients, and we tried to choose example recipes that were representative of each brand’s approach.

Finally, we looked for services with versatile membership options and strong customer service reputations. By reading reviews from real-life users — and considering the opinions of our in-house reviewers — we hope we’ve helped you find a subscription that works.

That's it for our vegan meal subscriptions list! If you’ve tried any of these services, be sure to let us know. Remember, your feedback helps our users decide whether or not to try a certain sub (and what to expect when they open the box).

I’m surprised Splendid Spoon made the cut. I know taste varies from person to person, but I can’t imagine anyone liking their meals and smoothies. A few were good, but the majority were disgusting. I threw out most of my first and second boxes and promptly cancelled after the first one. Daily Harvest I can get behind, especially their smoothies and flatbreads!

Hungryroot is TERRIBLE. Charged me $99 for a box that I didn’t order (had orders on pause and they never let me know it was unpausing). Tried to contact them several times and NEVER heard back, nothing. Super unhappy with them.

I also had an issue with Hungry Root. They sent me a box of spoiled food (at the time I think they were still working out the kinks on their packing materials) and I had to threaten a charge back before they would refund me. Their customer service was hard to get ahold of and pretty terrible in general.

Our home is vegan, and I tried lots of them – Purple Carrot, Green Chef, Hungryroot, Daily Harvest, Hello Fresh, Thistle (prepared meals), Methodology (prepared meals) and Sun Basket. (And more, especially prepared meals.)
You need to actually order and make multiple recipes / eat to find out which company is the best.
While lots of companies’ recipes are so boring and blunt, “Sun Basket” menus are unique and have lots of different varieties. Very flavorful and enjoyable.
Also, descent cooking time, 20-45 minutes for each recipes. I think their sauces and spices are the biggest key! You don’t need to go through lots of measurements but they include very yummy sauces, dressings, spices etc to complete the yummy flavors. And unlikely you would mess up the meal, very clear and simple instructions on a card.
And their ingredients are fresh and consistently good quality, and they provide organic ingredients as much as possible. Green Chef and Hello Fresh weren’t really good, some of the ingredients looked old. Sun Basket usually only has 2-3 completely vegan recipes per week, but few more vegetarian options available so you can modify (by not using cheese etc). And also some menu has options to choose your proteins, so you can choose vegan proteins, instead of fish or meat.
And their snacks, soup, juice options are also good.
I’ve been adding them so I don’t need to go grocery at all during this Coronavirus situation. Our meals are totally relying on their delivery at this moment!
If I talk about prepared meals, Thistle is the best.
Their foods are really, really yummy, it tastes very clean but actually very yummy. I’ve been very impressed. And definitely I could feel my energy level was improving. I love cooking so I only order Thistle 1 week in a month, but when I’m busy I use Thistle more to survive my busy schedule. And actually I’m a long time customer (2-3 years?) but I haven’t tired with their menus at all!

Anyways, from my experience, the best vegan meal kit delivery 2018-2020 is “Sun Basket”!!
And prepared vegan meal delivery is “Thistle”!!
