7 Best Vitamin and Supplement Subscriptions in 2021

Kat Giuffrida
ByKat GiuffridaNov 8, 2021 | 0 comments

Having to make a final decision on which multivitamins and supplements to take for your health needs can be a challenging one, that’s for sure. Some brands claim to include everything under the sun in their products, but oftentimes the ingredients they use are found in cheap, suboptimal forms which may lead to undesirable side effects or not supply your body with sufficient amounts of the nutrients it desperately needs. Thankfully, there are several brands that rise above the competition and provide customers with high-quality nutrients and maintain full transparency about what’s actually inside their products as well as explain what each ingredient does. We’ve compiled a list of the brands we trust the most in the modern vitamin and supplement subscription world and hope that one or more of these brands will provide exactly what you’re looking for in a health supplement.

Best Vitamin And Supplement Subscriptions

1. Ritual – Best Vitamin Subscription For Basic Coverage And Age-Related Needs

Image via our review.

Best For: People who are looking for a vitamin that will complement their healthy diet and lifestyle, that doesn’t contain an overabundance of nutrients that they may already consume enough of. Also rated as one of the best multivitamins for vegans and vegetarians available today.

Price: Starts at $30 per month. Sign up here!

About the Subscription: Ritual offers a monthly vitamin subscription that provides people with most of the essential nutrients they need in their optimal forms. Ritual offers several different versions of its Essential Multivitamin including one for women, men, teens, and children 4+. Both the women’s and men’s versions are available for 18+ and 50+, but there are also prenatal and postnatal formulations available for women as well.

All versions of Essential Multivitamin are vegan-friendly and come in delayed-release capsules, except for Children 4+ which is available in a plant-based gummy form. This product can be taken by mostly anyone, regardless of dietary preferences, however, it is highly appropriate for vegans and vegetarians to use this multivitamin as it contains several nutrients that are often found in extremely low quantities in a plant-based diet: vitamin B12, vitamin D3, vitamin K2, DHA, iron, zinc, and choline (this nutrient is only found in the prenatal, postnatal, and children’s versions).

Each multivitamin contains between 9 and 15 nutrients and you can find each nutrient’s sourcing and form here. Ritual is one of the most transparent vitamin brands around today and goes above and beyond to ensure that each customer knows the origin of each ingredient they include in its Essential Multivitamin as well as the type of manufacturing that was used to create it.

In addition to their transparency, Ritual also uses the optimal forms of each nutrient included in its multivitamins. Examples of this include the following:

  • Folate instead of folic acid
  • Vitamins D3 and K2 over D2 and K1
  • Activated B12 (methylcobalamin) instead of cyanocobalamin
  • Chelated minerals for easier digestion including iron bisglycinate, chelated dimagnesium malate, and zinc bisglycinate chelate

On top of these features, Ritual also includes DHA in each of its multivitamins sourced from algae, which is a major nutrient that many vitamin and supplement brands do not include either due to taste or additional cost.

2. Persona – Best Custom Vitamin Pack Subscription

Persona Vitamin Review

Best For: People who want to customize their vitamins and supplements as much as possible to target specific health needs.

Price: Starts at $21.99 per month. Sign up here!

ACTIVE DEAL: Get 50% off your first month! No coupon needed - just use this link.

About the Subscription: Want to step up your vitamin and supplement game but don’t want to spend a fortune on buying 20+ individual products? Persona offers one of the most personalized approaches to designing daily vitamin and supplement packs. Customers can create a fully customized vitamin subscription by completing an online assessment or they can choose from among several curated vitamin packs if they only want to use a few ingredients to focus on a single health area.

Customers who want to obtain their own personalized vitamins will first need to take Persona’s online assessment. It’s extremely thorough compared to most other vitamin quizzes and asks questions about medical history, medication use, health goals, and more. Once you’ve completed the assessment, Persona will apply its scientifically-backed algorithm in order to develop a personalized vitamin pack that’s designed to meet your specific health needs.

Customers will receive both morning and evening vitamin packs that contain a different set of ingredients depending on their desired health outcomes. Here’s an example of the types of ingredients your pack may contain:

  • Fitness Formula: Astaxanthin and CoQ10
  • The Essentials: Foundational Multivitamin and Daily Probiotic
  • Sound Slumber Program: Melatonin and Herbal Rest
  • Female Health Support: Borage with Saffron
  • Bone Support II: Calcium/Magnesium with Vitamin D
  • CBD Hemp Support: CBD Hemp Extract

Customers may also choose to select curated vitamin packs that are centered on more specific health goals, such as Weight Loss Support, Energy, or Sleep. Since these vitamin packs typically contain half of the ingredients that come in Persona’s personalized vitamin packs, they are usually cheaper, but the only catch is that you cannot add or remove ingredients from these packs.

While prices and ingredients vary, you can expect to pay around $60-100/month for a customized vitamin pack that contains around 6-10 ingredients whereas curated packs cost anywhere from $21.99 to $30.99 for 3-ingredient packs and up to $73.99 to $83.9 for 5-ingredient packs.

3. Rootine – Best Blood-Based Vitamin Subscription

Rootine

Best For: People who want to take a more scientific approach to their nutrient needs and desire to use a multivitamin that provides them with the exact dosages of nutrients that their bodies truly need.

Price: Starts at $69 per month. Sign up here!

About the Subscription: Rootine is the ideal vitamin subscription for people who want to identify their current nutrient deficiencies and tailor their supplement regimen to correct these areas. Rootine provides customers the option to incorporate both blood and DNA testing into developing their custom vitamin beads, however, they may also choose to receive a formulation that’s based on their lifestyle and health habits only. If customers have completed prior blood or DNA tests before, they may upload these results so that Rootine can further personalize their vitamin packs without requiring additional testing.

Rootine’s vitamin packs contain a mixture of the following nutrients in varying dosages that are dependent on a customer’s individual test results: Vitamins B2, B6, B9 (Folate), B12, D3, C, and E, Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc, Manganese, Copper, Iron, Selenium, Phytosterols, Alpha Lipoic Acid, MSM, CoQ10, Omega-3s. Unlike most vitamin packs, Rootine offers its nutrients in the form of microbeads that are 6-hour long slow-release and prevent absorption interference. It’s best to take the beads with water as they are not designed to be chewed or blended in any form.

It is generally best practice to re-test every 3 months to ensure that your Rootine vitamin packet is correctly dosed to your nutrient needs. All customers will be able to track their nutrient level progress via their online dashboard.

4. Viome– Best Personalized Probiotics

viome probiotic supplements and gut health testing

Best For: People who want a comprehensive understanding of their gut health and desire to use a probiotic and prebiotic supplement that’s tailored to their individual needs.

Price: Starts at $59.95 per month. Sign up here!

About the Subscription: I’m sure most everyone here is aware of the expansive list of options available today for probiotics, but did you know that you can now receive a personalized probiotic and prebiotic supplement that’s based upon gut health testing and individual health status? Viome offers gut intelligence testing that utilizes both blood and stool collections to determine precise dosages for each individual’s prebiotics, probiotics, and supplements based on their distinct biological profile. These tests are used to identify your gut microbiome health, cellular function health, immune health, stress response, and other key areas that are directly related to digestion and its impact on your overall health.

Based upon your results, you’ll be provided a personalized list of foods to avoid or include in your diet and will also be recommended certain supplements, probiotics, and prebiotics that work with your gut and are free of undesirable side effects that may otherwise occur from taking less specific products.

Each customer’s care plan will include both Precision Supplements and Precision Prebiotics + Probiotics. The Precision Supplements pack contains a mix of vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, and food extracts contained in 8 daily capsules. The Precision Prebiotics + Probiotics are provided in powder form and contained in a daily stick pack.

Although each customer’s packs will vary greatly, here are a few examples of some of the ingredients you may come across:

  • Probiotic Strains (60 different strains total): B. animalis ssp lactis B420, B. bifidum Bb-06, B. breve Bb-03, B. longum BL-05, L. acidophilus NCFM, L. brevis Lbr-35, L. casei Lc-11, L. plantarum Lp-115, L. reuteri 1E1
  • Prebiotics: Acacia Fiber, Apple Pectin, Beet Root Fiber, Beta-Glucan, Flaxseed, Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), Ginger, Inulin
  • Supplements: Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA), Amla Fruit Extract, Betaine Hydrochloride, Boswellia Serrata Gum Extract, Bromelain, Chondroitin, Chromium

If you’re curious about what else you may find in your pack, you can find the full list of ingredients here.

While I believe that Viome is one of the best brands available today for comprehensive gut health testing and customized probiotics and prebiotics, many consumers may decide that the overall price goes beyond their budget or want to purchase a probiotic supplement that is broad-spectrum and has predetermined strains. In that case, I suggest checking out Seed instead, as it’s more affordable and provides full transparency with the strains that are included in each purchase as its product has the same formulation for each customer.

5. Athletic Greens – Best All-In-One Vitamin Powder For Immune Support

Athletic Greens powder being mixed into cup of water by woman

Best For: People who are looking to take their vitamins and supplements all at once in powder form. Perfect for people who hate capsules and are looking for the ultimate immune system boost.

Price: Starts at $79 per month. Sign up here!

About the Subscription: Wouldn’t it be great if you could sip down your vitamins and supplements in a single drink? Athletic Greens has crafted a mega-nutrient powder that contains 75 nutrients including vitamins, minerals, digestive enzymes, and much more.  This formulation is centered upon immune system defense and contains an expansive list of antioxidants, adaptogens, and superfoods to assist the body in detoxication and liver support.

It contains 5 major blends including the following:

  • Vitamins and Minerals
  • Alkaline, Nutrient-Dense Raw Superfood Complex
  • Nutrient-Dense Extracts, Herbs, and Antioxidants
  • Digestive Enzymes & Super Mushroom Complex
  • Dairy-Free Probiotics

While this approach to vitamins and supplements is quite practical, some consumers will need to confirm whether or not they may have potential interactions between the use of certain medications and herbs contained in this vitamin powder. However, most people should be able to consume this product free of worries.

This product is best suited for individuals who want to use an all-in-one approach to taking their daily vitamins and supplements. Some customers may prefer to use individual products or other brands instead as this ingredient combination may lead to gastrointestinal discomfort in some individuals who have dietary sensitivities. Customers should also keep in mind that this product does not contain vitamin D3, omega fats, or iron, so they will need to consume those nutrients through their diet or the use of supplements.

6. First Day – Best Gummy Vitamins For Women And Children

First Day Vitamins for kids with gummies

Best For: Women and children that want to take a gummy vitamin that uses more optimal forms of certain nutrients, contains low amounts of sugar, and is sourced from organic foods.

Price: Starts at $30 per month. Sign up here!

ACTIVE DEAL: Save 20% on orders $50+. No coupon needed - just use this link.

About the Subscription: First Day has developed a gummy multivitamin for women and children that’s sourced from organic fruits and vegetables and contains up to 80% less sugar compared to similar brands. First Day’s multivitamins also contain several nutrients in their most bioavailable forms including vitamin D3, vitamin K2, and activated B vitamins such as folate and vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin. The Kid’s Daily Essential version contains 9 nutrients and the Women’s Daily Supercharge version contains 13 nutrients.

You can find the following ingredients in First Day’s vitamins:

  • Organic Fruit and Veggie Blend: Broccoli, Broccoli Sprouts, Tomato, Carrot, Spinach, Kale, Strawberry, Raspberry, Blueberry, Tart Cherry, Pomegranate, Cranberry
  • Additional Ingredients: Tapioca Syrup, Cane Sugar, Water, Pectin, Citric Acid, Natural Colors, Natural Flavors, Organic Fruit and Vegetable Blend, Sunflower Oil, Carnauba Wax

Many of our readers prefer the brand Llama Naturals due to its taste, however I want to point out that Llama Naturals does not use the most bioavailable forms of vitamins D and K. Llama Naturals uses a vitamin D2 and D3 blend along with vitamin K1 compared to vitamin D3 and K2 found in First Day. This is very important for consumers to consider as vitamin D3 is more effective at elevating and maintaining your vitamin D levels and vitamin K1 does not affect bone mineralization and cannot be converted into K2 in sufficient quantities for the body to use (Lily Nichols RDN, CDE discusses this in-depth in her book Real Food for Pregnancy). However, the one upside to using Llama Naturals, in addition to its taste, is that its formulation is designed for use by both women and men, and it also offers additional supplements in gummy form.

7. Perelel – Best Prenatal And Postnatal Vitamin Subscription

perelel prenatal postnatal vitamins

Best For: Women who are seeking prenatal and postnatal nutritional support.

Price: Starts at $48 per month. Sign up here!

ACTIVE DEAL: Take 15% off your first month of Perelel.
CODE: MSA15

About the Subscription: Perelel offers prenatal and postnatal vitamin subscriptions for women and also has a multivitamin for men as well. Perelel has designed each of its vitamin packs to be specific to the timeline of preconception through all of pregnancy and beyond. It offers the following products for women: Conception Support Pack, 1st Trimester Prenatal Pack, 2nd Trimester Prenatal Pack, 3rd Trimester Prenatal Pack, Mom Multi Support Pack.

Each vitamin pack by Perelel contains essential nutrients for conception, fetal development, and postpartum healing. Some of the key nutrients included in these packs are as follows:

  • Vitamin D (as cholecalciferol) @ 50mcg/2000IU
  • Vitamin B6 (as pyridoxal 5-phosphate sodium) @ 3mg
  • Vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin) @ 10mcg
  • Folate (as L-5 methylfolate) @ 700mcg
  • Choline (as choline bitartrate) @ 120mg
  • Vitamin K (as menaquinone-7) @30mcg
  • Iron (as ferrous bisglycinate chelate (Ferrochel®)) @ 15mg
  • Iodine (as potassium iodide) @ 150mcg
  • Selenium (as l-selenomethionine) @50mcg
  • Magnesium (as magnesium bisglycinate) @ 30mg

All of the above nutrients are found in their optimal forms and are also gentler, leading to fewer if any side effects as long as Perelel is taken alongside food. Other prenatal and postnatal vitamins contain harsher forms of ingredients, such as ferrous fumarate, or use nutrients in cheaper forms that are easier to produce but are less efficiently used by the body, such as vitamin D2 or vitamin K1 mentioned earlier in this article.

You may notice on Perelel’s website that the formulation for each vitamin pack is the same. However, each pack also comes with its own supplement mix in addition to vitamins and minerals, such as omega-3s, CoQ10, ginger, or other essential supplements for supporting pregnancy. As such, you’ll notice that the differences between each vitamin pack are based on the varying dosages of these supplements and are dependent on what each trimester’s unique nutrient demands are. While the 1st Trimester Prenatal Pack comes with ginger to alleviate nausea, the 2nd Trimester Prenatal Pack comes with additional calcium and magnesium and the 3rd Trimester Prenatal Pack comes with probiotics.

Another important feature of Perelel is that it contains both folate and choline – the dynamic duo for fetal brain development and the prevention of neural tube defects. However, I would still suggest consuming foods that are high in choline, such as eggs, in addition to using this product as women need an absolute minimum intake of 450mg of choline per day.

The only other potential downside to using this product is women who do not consume fish will be unable to use the Omega DHA + EPA capsules as they are sourced from high-quality fish oil. If you fall under this category and would like to use another prenatal vitamin that contains a vegan-friendly version of DHA, then we recommend using Ritual’s Essential Prenatal instead. Just know that the tradeoff with this decision is that Essential Prenatal contains about 1/3 of the amount of choline found in Perelel so you may want to supplement additional choline bitartrate or use Ritual’s Daily Shake Pregnancy & Postpartum which contains 250mg of choline per serving on top of using this multivitamin.
