Saalt Menstrual Cup Duo Pack - Retail Value $43.00
It's no secret that I love menstrual cups. I've talked about them a couple of times before here at MSA and can't stress enough how much I enjoy using mine. Here, Beauty Heroes has chosen a brand that is new to me called Saalt. This particular pack comes with not one, but two cups (which I'm on the fence about needing) which are different sizes to wear for different flows. Typically I've seen the various sizes correlate with age and/or whether or not the user has given birth, but Saalt seems to suggest sizes based on capacity. The smaller cup (holds about 3 tampons worth) is a lovely pink color while the larger one (which is about the size of the one I currently use regularly and holds 4 tampons worth) is a pleasing blue. Each reusable cup can last up to 10 years and is made from medical grade silicone and will collect your menstrual blood until you empty it, rinse, and reinsert it. Like all cups, it can stay put for up to 12 hours at a time (but you may need to empty it more often based on your flow) and can fully replace your tampon usage, thus, cutting down on that much disposable waste. As I've mentioned in other reviews, there is definitely a learning curve for beginners when they start using a cup, but once you've got it down and eliminate user-error it is a very freeing feeling! Both cups also come with their own super cute cotton drawstring pouch to keep them in while not in use. If you have more questions about cup usage in general, they have a handy user guide on their website (those graphics may be a lil' NSFW though, heads up) in addition to the paper guides that come in the package.
Knotty Floss No Knot Bamboo Charcoal Floss - Estimated Retail Value $6.00 (Buy a pack of 3 for $18.00)
If you've followed some of my other oral care reviews, you'll know I have a penchant for what I call "goth" items (aka unlikely all-black products). This charcoal floss falls into that beloved category since floss is typically white and I am fawning over the tiny reusable glass jar with adorable cartoon tooth on the front. While there is some polyester in here, it's also made with bamboo, activated charcoal, plant-based candelilla wax, peppermint oil, and grapefruit seed extract. It doesn't glide as easily as some other flosses but I had no problem maneuvering this between my teeth to clean out any leftover food bits that may get in the way of a perfect dental report card. It feels strong and leaves a bit of mintiness behind after use.
Mable Bamboo Toothbrushes, 2 ct. - Retail Value $12.00
I have always been a dental hygiene enthusiast ever since I was a small child. At 39, I'm only on my third Dentist and that's only because I've moved and the first two retired. What I'm saying is that I get lucky with good ones. I enjoy trying out new tooth brushing technology but recently I've been thinking more about the end of those brushes lives and how many I've tossed into landfills. Enter: Mable and their 100% biodegradable sustainably harvested bamboo handled toothbrush with non-toxic and BPA-free nylon bristles. These babies are no-frills and a minimalist's dream since they are not only well-designed but also don't even need a holder since they can stand on their own. Beauty Heroes included two brushes in this box, one with a blue (vegetable-based paint) base and the other with red so that you can share with a partner or friend. Both came in the soft-bristled option (although extra soft and medium are also available) and I found it to be a perfect strength. Ergonomically-speaking I've used a more comfortable brush but knowing that these will eventually mostly break down into the earth instead of being in a landfill forever, makes the slightly less comfortable 4 minutes of use a day seem pretty doable.
David's Toothpaste in Peppermint + Charcoal, 5.25 oz. - Retail Value $9.95
Alright, perfect! They've included toothpaste as well! Not just toothpaste, but a fancy all natural charcoal + peppermint toothpaste in a metal tube that even comes with its own metal tube key. I've always wanted a tube key to smoosh out all possible tube remnants but never really took the leap to purchase one. Now, I don't have to. I haven't had great luck with charcoal toothpaste in the past and simply found it way too messy. This paste, however, is different. Instead of a shocking deep black, this one is a lighter grey so it isn't noticeably getting flecked all over the sink, my shirt, the mirror, etc. The peppermint flavor is powerful and along with the charcoal and other ingredients really makes my teeth feel fresh and clean after brushing. Shockingly to me, this toothpaste has stevia (which I hate) but I can't even taste it, so that's a big plus. It's all made in the USA using 98% USA origin ingredients and is fluoride and sulfate-free and the tube is recyclable: which helps reduce waste and your carbon footprint.
Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant Stick in Grapefruit - Retail Value $22.00
Suuuuper excited about this item because not only am I natural deodorant obsessed right now but I also recently saw this in a natural beauty pop up shop. The packaging is clearly the cutest thing I have ever seen from a deodorant with the flexing cat and weightlifting cobra along with the seal that keeps the lid tamper-proof that, well, is a SEAL. Plus, it's biodegradable since its made with a paper tube that resembles the push-up pops of yore. The deodorant itself is a baking soda and aluminum-free stick that is kind of in between being powdery and a solid gel. It smells AH-MAZING thanks to grapefruit seed oil and out of the three days I've worn it thus far, I have no complaints.
Meow Meow Tweet Lip Balm in Sweet Orange Tangerine - Retail Value $14.00
In addition to the deodorant stick, they've also included a chubby lip balm in the same push-up packaging from (my new fave brand name) Meow Meow Tweet. This tube features a cat surfing on a wave provided by a whale and has a wonderful sweet orange tangerine scent. I love a chubby balm and this one is sure to last me oodles of time, based on the size. Made with olive fruit oil, coconut oil, cocoa seed butter, and candelilla wax along with rosemary leaf extract and the aforementioned sweet orange and tangerine peel oils, this balm is cruelty-free and made using mostly organic + fair trade ingredients. My lips feel so soft and smooth!
Honua Skincare 'Olena Oil, 1 oz. - Retail Value $48.00
I am very familiar with Honua after receiving this very product in another box back in February as well as some of their other products at various times. Their beauty oil is very lightweight and is made with Hawaiian turmeric which helps repair skin issues like acne, eczema, sun damage, and also helps calm inflammation. It absorbs into the skin quickly while restoring hydration and only a small amount is needed to cover your entire face and neck. This is a wonderful product to highlight in the living lighter box since it's handcrafted in Hawaii and uses local ingredients found on the island. Their glass bottle is reusable and the box it comes in is recyclable or compostable and printed with vegetable ink.
Limited Edition Strawsleeves Utensil Kit - Retail Value $35.00
I'm quite excited about my new utensil set that comes with everything I need to cut down on plastic disposable items while traveling or out and about. At home, of course, it's easy to use silverware we wash and reuse but if you're eating takeout at work or while traveling, there's no telling where those disposable utensils are coming from (or ending up), so this little kit is perfect for those who want to reduce. The black with red and white lined carrying case is made with organic cotton and hemp sewn by hand right here in the US. It includes a fork, spoon, and knife made of bamboo as well as a glass straw (with accompanying cleaning brush) that are all quite sturdy and don't bend while you're getting your grub on. The glass straw is branded with the Beauty Heroes logo and says "Live Lighter, Love More" in red down the side. I like using a glass straw while sipping my iced coffee just knowing that it won't end up in the Ocean somewhere. This kit is great to keep at work where plastic utensils can tend to run amok or on road trips, camping trips, or simply as a single set to use at home. Each item has its own place to slide into the pouch where it can be rolled up and stowed away with minimal space taken up.
Give a Sh*t by Ashlee Piper Book - Retail Value $17.00 (Found here for $11.99)
Well, this book is just terrific! I cracked it open a few days ago and even though I'm a super slow reader, it grabbed my attention immediately. Ashlee Piper has a very fun and intelligent voice in the way she drops some swear words but keeps it real without being judgy. There is a wealth of information in here that covers many many ways to reduce what you use, think more about what you're purchasing, and how to minimize your consumption in smart and chic ways to cut down on harming the earth. There are food recipes as well as ones for cleaning and personal care items, facts on how much Americans use and where it ends up, and ideas on how to slowly become more earth-conscious in your daily life. I have so much more to read here, but it's already got me pretty excited to do better on a personal level with tips on how to walk the walk instead of just talking the talk. Very excited to learn more!
Verdict: I am wild about this entire box and think the curation is wonderful and timely since today is Earth Day! I do my fair share of product consumption in my personal life as well as my professional one, so viewing this as a starter kit on how to live with less is super exciting. Beauty Heroes has done an excellent job identifying various products where we can be a little kinder to the earth and perhaps use less overall. As someone who is always trying to figure out new ways to use less harmful beauty, personal care, and household items, I think this is a great place to start! The total retail value for this box is $206.95 which is well over the $125 cost.
