Quip Special Edition ADA Foundation All Black Toothbrush Set Review
Quip ADA Foundation Special Edition Electric Starter Set - Retail Value $55.00
Quip has introduced a new special edition toothbrush that benefits the ADA Foundation and features a completely black design, including the brush head. It comes in a special box as well.
The ADA Foundation annually provides more than $2 million in grants, scholarships, awards, and facilitated in-kind product donations to programs that are in alignment with the organization’s efforts to advance oral health, expand access to dental care, and drive game-changing research.
The back shows the anatomy of a Quip electric toothbrush.
Snuggled inside, you'll find your new toothbrush, a tube of Quip's large mint toothpaste, and a booklet.
Here's the starter set with included booklet.
When I first started using Quip, I have to say, I liked their approach and was surprised by the little tips they included which were refreshing to hear.
It goes over setting your brush up, how to use it, all of the features, other available products (like toothpaste), and how the refill program works.
On the other side, you'll find their contact email, and those "Pro-fresh-ional Tips" I mentioned. The main feature of a Quip toothbrush is that this baby has a small motor inside that creates a "sensitive sonic vibration" for two minutes (which is the suggested amount of time to brush). They suggest breaking up your mouth into quadrants to concentrate on while brushing an there's a quick pause in the vibration every 30 seconds which is your reminder to move on to the next area. It's so simple yet 100% motivates me to brush for longer than 30 seconds total like I may have been doing without a guided timer. Their booklet also suggests short slow strokes against your teeth and to not rinse the toothpaste out of your mouth right away. Who knew? They suggest waiting 30 mins to allow the formula to "work its magic".
The toothbrush comes in a tube that you can reuse to hold small things like beads, buttons, or something of the sort. When your refills come, they'll come in one too, just a shorter one.
There's an included stand/cover that is normally white for the other colors but stays matte black for this special edition version.
Full disclosure: I've been using Quip for almost a year now, but when Emily sent me a link to this beautiful matte black design (because she knew I'd love it), I squealed with delight. My previous one was the green plastic version, so this is like upgrading to a sexy sports car. Yes, I just called this toothbrush sexy.
The back of the stand has a sticky strip that can be stuck and re-stuck to a mirror or tile if you so desire to make a secure home for your brush.
Flip the stand around and it becomes a cover for travel!
The brush head (made with nylon and silicone bristles) is detached by firmly pulling it straight away from the handle. You'll need to do this every three months when your replacement toothbrush head arrives but it comes fully assembled with your first order.
The back of the simple brush head has the Quip logo which doubles as a tongue scraper.
Here's the anatomy of the toothbrush IRL. It's really simple to replace the battery and you'll get a fresh one of those with every brush head refill as well.
Large (3-month) Quip Mint Toothpaste, 4.7 oz. - Retail Value $5.00 (included in the starter set price)
The set also comes with a large tube of their toothpaste that will auto-ship every three months. I'd describe this toothpaste as sort of a soft creamy mint. It made my mouth feel really clean after brushing but wasn't overpoweringly minty.
Small (2-week) Quip Mint Toothpaste, 0.85 oz. - Retail Value $5.00 (not included in the starter set)
This one isn't part of the starter kit but is available to add on as an auto-ship item and is great for travel.
Quip (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition Electric Starter Set - Retail Value $40.00
In addition to the ADA Foundation, Quip also offers a Special Edition (PRODUCT) RED version that helps funds HIV/AIDS health and community programs through the Global Fund. Like any of the starter sets, you'll get the electric toothbrush, multi-use cover/mount, and a large toothpaste. Once you sign up, you'll be charged $10.oo every three months for a new toothbrush head and toothpaste.
It has the same metal handle as the black version, but in red with the (PRODUCT) RED logo on the back and the classic white brush head. You can purchase it alone, but it's available in a set with toothpaste which we've pictured above.
There's a card that comes with it that explains how you're supporting the cause as well.
A Few Things to Mention About Quip
Their toothbrushes are guaranteed for life, as long as you have an active refill subscription. I actually cracked a piece of the motor of my old brush from improperly removing my old brush head when the new one came. (Pro tip: Don't bend it down like you're breaking a twig in half, everyone! Just pull it straight out! They'll remind you how to do this correctly when you receive your refill.) Since I had cracked mine, the brush head did not stay on and would slowly slip off the handle while brushing. I contacted customer service and they were SO HELPFUL. All I needed to do was provide the email used to purchase the original brush, and send a few pics of the broken part and they shipped me out a brand new one rather quickly. I was very pleased!
That brings me to the next thing to know more about - Gifting! They have a whole explanation on their site:
Gifting a starter set with refill plan is easy and we guide you through the process during checkout. You can send your gift of choice to you (to gift in person) or direct to them, and then we send refill packs direct to them once every 3 months until you choose to cancel their plan. If you cancel the plan in your profile, we help them start their own plan using the email address you (optionally) provide at checkout. You can choose to gift a starter set without a 3 monthly Refill plan by clicking the "single set/brush" button under the item. (and If you supply their email during checkout, we will still help them in 3 months to signup via email for a plan if enjoying quip).
So basically, you can give someone a starter kit without signing up and paying for the refills and they can sign up for their own refill plan. Just remember that they'll need to know your email address if they need a replacement. The only thing that worries me is that currently on their site, there is only a white option for brush heads. Customer service did assure me that if you do sign up for refills when purchasing the all black version, you WILL receive black refills but if you were to give the starter kit as a gift, there doesn't seem to be a way the recipient can sign up for the all black head specifically.
Verdict: I desperately love my new all black Quip and feel good about supporting the ADA Foundation. I've been a fan of their toothbrushes for almost a year now and can say that I don't ever miss other brushes. I also find the refill of brush heads and toothpaste really great as it's one less thing I have to remember to switch out or buy.
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes! This awesome all black toothbrush is still available!
Make sure to add Quip to your subscription list or wishlist!
