The 11 Best Razor Subscriptions for Smooth Shaving – 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards

Christen Russo
ByChristen RussoApr 15, 2022 | 77 comments

Everyone who shaves has a shared goal: smooth, satiny skin with no nicks or irritation. But there are more roads than one that can lead you there! Decisions range from cartridges vs. safety razors, five blades or just one, aloe strips vs. no aloe strips, and what lotion, oil, or other product you'll use to hydrate your skin afterward. With the variety of individuals, hair types, and needs that exist, we're happy to report that there are a number of shaving systems offered as subscriptions—you're sure to find the razor subscription that works for you.

Every year, we ask our readers to share their top recommended subscriptions of all types. Then we ask our experts to share what they know about each subscription to make it easy for you to know which subscription is right for you. Below, you’ll find our insights for shopping shaving care and razor subscriptions, and see readers’ top choices for disposable razor subscriptions, safety razor subscriptions, women's razor subscriptions as well as the skincare that goes along with the territory.

What To Look For When Shopping Razor Subscriptions

A razor subscription can simplify your routine and take one last item to replenish off your grocery list. Sounds like a great way to simplify life to us! Many shaving clubs offer more than just the goods, too, acting as amazingly helpful resources to help you reduce irritation and own a smooth shave. There's something out there for every budget, and even the most affordable razor subscriptions are an upgrade from what many local convenience stores have on offer.

With that in mind, we’ve collected a list of some of the best razor clubs for both men and women. Before you shop, some thoughts to keep in mind:

  • Decide whether you want a shaving subscription or a one-time shaving kit. If you shave infrequently, monthly razor deliveries might overwhelm you with unnecessary products. In our list, we’ve included both subscription and non-subscription options (and most shave clubs that offer subscriptions also allow one-off orders).
  • Look for the best long-term value. Razor companies often sell their state-of-the-art “systems" for cheap — because customers will buy the replacement cartridges at inflated prices. We’ve focused on companies that provide excellent value over time.
  • Don’t forget the add-ons. If you regularly suffer from razor burn and ingrown hairs, your razor might be the problem — but add-on essentials like moisturizing shave butter might be exactly what you need for smoother shaving.

The Most Popular Razor Subscription Boxes

Read on for our reader’s recommendations for the best razor subscription boxes for men and women that are currently available. If we missed anything, we'd love it if you would let us know in the comments. If you’ve tried one of these services, be sure to leave a quick review (even if you had a poor experience — your review can help other readers avoid subscription remorse).

2. Billie

The Best Female-First Shave Brand

Billie Razor Starter Kit including bluue handle, 2 cartridges, and magnetic holder arranged around shipping bag.

Image via our review.

What’s In This Shaving Subscription Box

Billie’s shaving products are designed for women, with sleek designs that easily navigate angles and curves. The 5-blade cartridges handle body hair with ease while cutting down on shave time, and a silky aloe-and-charcoal bar at the top of each razor helps to nurture sensitive skin.

While razor aesthetics aren’t an especially important part of shaving, we dig the fun color options — after all, there’s nothing wrong with matching your accessories to your decor. The best part: Billie’s razors fit into a magnetic holder. Stick the holder to a shower wall or other flat surface, and you’ll keep your razors sharp and rust-free while maintaining easy access.

Who It's For

Billie is designed as a women's razor subscription, but the design is fairly gender-neutral. A great shave is a great shave, and this shaving club delivers.

Other Products from Billie

Body lotion, shave cream, and body wash in fruity botanical scents, as well as a razor travel case. They also just introduced non-shaving beauty items like lip balm, dry shampoo, and facial wipes, all of which are geared towards women (with no “pink tax" included).

Pros

  • Comes with a magnetic holder that sticks to your shower wall.
  • Fun colors to choose from.

Cons

  • The colors aren't very gender-neutral...though we don't believe all colors are for all genders.
  • Language is also very gendered on their site.

What Readers Say:

“Super easy to maintain and adding things to your order when needed is also smooth. Customer service seems very receptive and I have not had any issues. Nice not to have to worry about picking razors up at the store!” – Beth

Shipping:

What’s In This Razor Subscription Box

Dollar Shave Club is one of the few subscriptions to offer more than one cartridge style (subscribers can choose from four blades or six). They’re also one of the most well-known and popular shaving clubs around—for good reason. 4. Harry's

The Best Razor Subscription for Men

Harry's razor starter kit with blue handle, shave gel, and travel case on a blue background

Image via our review.

What’s In This Shaving Subscription Box

Harry’s has a wonderfully weighted handle surrounded by a rubbery grip in one of three bold colors. Their products are marketed towards men, but as we've stated before, a great razor can work wonders for anyone.

Harry’s 5-blade German-made cartridges make shaving a breeze, cutting down the time of your shave without sacrificing precision. The travel case included in the starter kit helps keep the razor safe (and looks pretty spiffy, too).

This shaving club cuts out all the extras — though their store has plenty of excellent personal care and aftershave products — so you’ll get exceptional razors without gimmicks or pushy marketing. Every year, Harry’s donates 1% of sales to nonprofits that provide mental health care services to men in need.

Who It's For

Harry’s razors are designed for men. Again, a razor is a razor, but some of the other options we’ve covered (such as Billie) have designs that would be more appropriate for body hair.

Other Products from Harry’s

Shaving products, skincare, shower products, hair products, and accessories. Several sets and bundles are available from $16-$35.

Pros

  • Shave products are free from sulfates and parabens.
  • Harry's donates 1% of our sales to nonprofits that provide mental health care services to men in need every year.

Cons

  • These razors have a facial hair focus and aren't as good of an option for shaving body hair.

What Readers Say:

“Great stuff... I look forward to this box every month. The razors are great quality which is why I went with Harry's.” – Joe C.

“I got this a few months ago for myself! Love it! The quality of Harry's is far better than any female razors I find at target and walmart - and they're even cheaper! I get so much more for less with Harry's and won't be going back to anything else. The razors last a good while too, so I only get razors shipped every 6 months to myself.” – Airs

The Best Major Razor Brand Subscription for Women

Image via Gillette Venus

What’s In This Razor Subscription Box

Venus by Gillette is a shave club for women featuring the Venus line of razors. You’ve seen them in the razor aisle — they’re a classic for a good reason, and Gillette continues to add features to make your shaving journey a little more comfortable.

Choose from four handle styles and seven different types of blade cartridges. You can choose the frequency of your deliveries and add products from their new shaving product Venus line to your orders, so this is a one-stop-shop for everything you need. Be sure to check out their kits, as the full Gillette lineup has options for targeting specific types of body hair or treating common shave issues.

Who It's For

Venus is designed specifically as a women's razor subscription. Guys could use them (and if you’re living with a man, you might find him borrowing your Venus every once in a while), but the styling is very feminine.

Other Products from Venus by Gillette

Other Gillette-owned grooming products, such as Olay skincare and Secret deodorant, are available as add-ons.

Pros

  • You can choose your handle style and your blade cartridge style.

6. Flamingo

The Best Razor Subscription for Body Hair

Flamingo starter kit including taro handle, 2 cartridges, body lotion, shave foam, suction cup holder, and a purple carry pouch on a blue background

Image via our review.

What’s In This Shaving Subscription

Flamingo starts you off with a short quiz to understand your body hair removal needs. They offer both shaving and waxing solutions, as well as moisturizing options for your specific needs and preferences. Flamingo blades are surrounded by a generous aloe bar that helps the razor glide across your skin. It also has a perfectly weighted handle fully surrounded by a rubbery grip that comes in four colors, each with a different vibe.

Rather than signing up for one specific subscription, Flamingo uses your quiz answers to suggest products that might enhance or improve your shaving and/or waxing routine. Each suggested product has a note indicating why it was selected for you, and they also suggest a refill frequency (every 2, 4, or 6 months) they think might work well for your lifestyle.

Who It's For

While Flamingo is dedicated to women-positive causes, their products feature gender-neutral styling. Several male reviewers have noted that the company’s products provide a smoother look and less irritation than other disposables on the market — throw in their excellent shave gel and body lotion, and you’re on your way to a worry-free shave.

Other Products from Flamingo

Foaming shave gel and body lotion with a floral scent, ingrown spot treatment, hydrating spray, and wax strips for body and face. Several bundles are available.

Pros

  • Offers not only options for your shaving needs, but wax strips as well. They'll send one, the other, or both.
  • Awesomely gender-inclusive brand.
  • Choose your refill frequency.

Cons

  • The razor cartridge isn't fully surrounded by a moisturizing strip.

Shipping:

Ships to the contiguous US. Shipping is free for orders over $15 and costs $3 for orders under $15.

9. Happy Legs Club

The Best Body Hair Razors for a Closer Shave

What’s In This Shaving Subscription Box

Happy Legs Club is a razor subscription for — you guessed it — shaving without succumbing to razor burn and irritation. They have “hers” and “his” options, both of which feature ergonomically designed razors and refill cartridges. You’ll also receive organic shave soap for a closer, more luxurious shave.

Their cartridges feature a vitamin E & aloe vera lubricating strip, and reviewers say that the razors are suitably sharp. The real draw here is the price; for less than $20 every two months, you’ll never worry about running out of cartridges.

This razor subscription ships in simple packaging, and it doesn’t have the bells and whistles of the other shave clubs we’ve covered. That’s the point: you need razors and shave soap. Happy Legs Club has razors and shave soap. Hey, whoever said that personal care had to be complicated?

Who It's For

Happy Legs Club is marketed towards women, and the razors are designed to target body hair.

Other Products from Happy Legs Club

Organic shave soap in lavender, oatmeal spice, and citrus scents.

Pros

  • This is a really straightforward subscription for those who want no-fuss.
  • Their shave soap comes in bar form, creating less waste.

10. OUI the People

Best Safety Razor Subscription for Women

Oui Shave rose gold razor, pack of blades, and shave cream group on blue background.

Image via our review.

What’s In This Shaving Subscription Box

We can appreciate a touch of luxury, and OUI the People has luxury to spare. Their razors feature a gorgeous metal surface in your choice of matte black or rose gold, which isn’t just beautiful; the material is built to last without rusting, and the heavy feel of the metal makes precision shaving easier.

Single double-edge blades create less waste than plastic cartridges, and while there’s a learning curve, you can get an incredibly close shave with classic-style razors. The weight of the razor guides the shaving process, trimming hair without pulling it away from your skin. That means a better shave for people with skin sensitivities—and OUI the People offers online resources to help you learn how to optimize your routine.

While this shaving club requires a fairly expensive initial purchase, it’s affordable over time; new blades are cheap, and both men and women can benefit from the single-blade revolution.

Who It's For

OUI the People’s razors use single double-edged blades, so any shaver could use them. Their styling is slightly more feminine than masculine (but that’s our subjective opinion).

Other Products from OUI the People

SUGARCOAT Shave Gel-to-Milk, FEATHERWEIGHT Hydrating Body Gloss, DEEP V Bikini Line Sheet Mask, and more. Several different sets are available too.

Pros

  • This brand is radically gender-inclusive of all on the gender spectrum.
  • Safety razors are about the most eco-friendly shaving solution out there!

Cons

  • More expensive upfront.
  • Single-blade razors require a little finesse and have a learning curve.

Shipping:

Ships to the US and Canada. US shipping is free over $75; costs $5 for US orders under $75, and $15 for Canada-bound orders.

Starting at $75.00

His purpose: “to make health and beauty simple for people of color.” Their flagship product is a meticulously crafted safety razor that minimizes irritation and razor bumps. How to Get The Most Out of Your Razor Subscription Once You’ve Picked

Once you’ve picked out the right box for you, here's what you can do to help make sure you make the most of your new subscription.

  • Check for a coupon before you place your order. If you know MSA, you know we love a deal. In addition to the coupons listed throughout this article, watch our feed to catch deals that can save you a few bucks, and don't forget to check in with our reviews and subscription box directory for the best coupons before buying.
  • Be honest with yourself as you answer quiz questions. Auto-refills and replenishment subscriptions are most awesome if you can nail your needs. Take a week or two to pay attention to your routine and shaving habits so you don't find yourself with too few or too many razor cartridges and shaving products.
  • Change your razor blade regularly. The best way to get a close shave is to use a sharp, clean blade or cartridge. Razor subscription boxes are a fantastic way to make sure you're fully supplied so you can rotate dull blades out regularly without having to make a run to the drugstore.
  • Dispose of razor cartridges properly. Be a good citizen of the earth! When your razor blade gets dull and you're ready for a new one, wrap the old one in tape or paper before tossing it in the garbage. Or, if you have a sharps collection location near you, you could take it there.

Factors We Considered When Reviewing These Razor Subscriptions

This list features our fellow subscription fanatics’ top choices, and we can confidently recommend the subscriptions above since we’ve researched and reviewed them all. Factors we considered when reviewing these subscriptions include:

  • Overall Value - If you’re purchasing razors online, you’re looking for the best possible deal. With that in mind, we avoided services with expensive refill kits — while a great shave is worth the money, we limited our selection to services that provide high-quality blades with budget-friendly pricing.
  • Brand Reputation - We thoroughly researched each company’s reputation; every brand makes occasional mistakes, but we prioritized razor clubs that provide responsive customer support. We also included a few reviews from MSA readers to help you understand what you’re getting for your money.
  • Shaving Subscription Options - Some people shave every day — others shave less than once per month. We looked for shaving subscriptions with easy online management options, which should help you order refills that fit your lifestyle. We also included services that specialize in one-off orders.
  • Add-On Products - The right shaving accessories can make a difference. While this was a minor factor, we tried to find shaving clubs that offered a variety of optional products for different skin types.

We hope we’ve helped you find a razor club that works for you. Remember, if you’ve had an experience with any of the brands listed above — positive or negative — let us know by leaving a comment or by writing a review on the company’s My Subscription Addiction page.

Hi there, I'm Christen! I've been writing with MSA since 2017. I am all sorts of things: a writer, a mother, an outdoors-lover, a low-maintenance self-carer, and general hungry person.

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

I love Athena. I tried Billie, but the razors were too gooey to use and wouldn’t shave. However, why is it considered a con that Billie is “gender” specific? Why can’t there be a women empowering shave site? I don’t like that suddenly women aren’t allowed to have their own products.

I canceled Billie after a couple months. The razors work so well the first couple times, but if someone takes a really hot shower and the soap thing around the blade melts and goes all over the blades so it’s no longer usable 🙄

Been using Harry’s and they are terrible. They cut me everywhere and make a squeeking sound when shaving as if I’m dry shaving but I’m not. I don’t have sensitive skin and still ended up with razor burn

I have tried Billie, Flamingo, Joy, Venus and in the last month – Athena. Nothing beats Athena, nope not even the very influencer-praised Billie. I have very thick, coarse, dark hair and it works so well. Athena for the win!!

That’s funny you say that after the first time the cartridge is dull because I have had it for several months and shave everyday so I get the 4 cartridges each month but I could go through 4 cartridges in a week. Then my problem was your subscription is every month but they don’t process your order until the beginning of the next month because of course they want to make sure your payment goes through but then it takes between 1-2 weeks to arrive so I was not getting my next set of cartridges until mid-month which at that time I had been out for 3 weeks and had to buy a drug store brand. Defeated the subscription. I did email them and voice my concern and that I would need to cancel if that was just their process and nothing else I could do. I will say their customer service was great. They emailed me right back and then I received a box from them with I think 14 cartridges to cover me. Unfortunately that was months ago and I have since ran out of those and run out of my monthly cartridges before end of week 2. Not sure what to do I can’t seem to find a razor worth writing a review about. Hands down though Billie has great customer service reps!

Add Athena club to the review list, I always like Venus, but expensive for me, Billie is okay… not terribly impressed… Flamingo is the most appealing, great design and price point

I loved Billie about a year ago. The strip went from aloe to some charcoal goop that is slimy and gross. The razors themselves have changed as well. I have since changed to Athena and am much happier with them.

I started using Billie in 2018 and initially loved them. It just isn’t the quality it used to be. At some point I tried flamingo (that stylish handle lured me in) but the razor wouldn’t stay on and the head was a little too flexible so I never ordered razor replacements. I’ve placed an order with Athena now and am hoping it’ll be a solid replacement for Billie.

I’ve recently joined Dollar Shave Club cause it was $5 for a starter kit! And I have to admit I had to Google like how what worked and in which order but I started with the Shave butter and then used post shave due! And I was really SURPRISED! I have psoriasis so I have to careful wat I use! Venus razors was the only ones that I had fewer cuts n Knicks. But it’s expensive buying razor refills! So I decided try something new! I LOVE IT SO FAR! I usually shave every other day sometimes every day and that’s because I would have stubbles on the 2nd day! With dollar Shave club I was super smooth on day 3 like day 1!!! Wat! Wow!

I have tried several of these, but IMHO they do not hold a candle to Athena! Your best bet is just to try it! Use code JESSICA3926 and that will make it only $4 to try and I promise you’ll see that it’s the best bang for your buck out there. Best quality shave, too.

I was using DSC for years, and started getting a lot of irritation and red bumps. I just switched over to Athena, and it’s much better! The starter kit is only $9, but you can get it for just $4 if you use my code, MONICA8962 <3

I had the same experience! I used DSC for years and started getting horrible irritation and ingrown hairs. I just attributed it to getting older bc it seems literally everything has changed in the last couple years. Thanks for the Athena rec.

I swear by Athena club which isn’t on this list. But I have started shaving with them as of a month ago and it’s phenomenal.

I used DSC for years, started before there were any other shaving subscription options and WAY before there were any targeted to women’s shaving needs.

I switched to Billie about 2 years ago and initially I loved it. The magnetic holder is simple yet so awesome! I have fibromyalgia and often find it too hard on my body to stand in the shower long enough to do everything I need to do so I take baths more often than showers. I eventually purchased an extra handle and magnetic holder ago I’d have one in my shower and another right next to my bathtub. I would never have done that if I hadn’t loved my Billie razors.

Unfortunately, over the last 6 months, give or take, the razor cartridges keep popping off of the handles while I’m shaving! It doesn’t seem to matter how much pressure I’m using, whether I’m using a brand new cartridge for the first time or one that I’ve used a few times already. It has happened while shaving my underarms, legs, bikini area, so thay doesn’t seem to be a determining factor either. It’s incredibly frustrating and trying to reattach the cartridge while my hands, the razor, and the cartridge are all wet and slippery from the shaving cream and water. I had experienced this kind of problem with numerous drug store razors, both men’s and women’s styles, which is one of the main reasons, aside from cost, that I decided to switch to DSC and then Billie.

I find it very frustrating that I never had any problems or complaints with my Billie razors and cartridges until about 6 months ago. I don’t know if they changed something about their design or if it’s necessary to replace the Billie razor handles after a certain period of time or after so many uses but I’ve never seen anything from the company stating that razor handles should be replaced after a given period of time or number of uses.

I also have had an issue with excessive ingrown hairs and razor bumps on my legs for about the last 10 years. I haven’t ever been able to determine why but none of the many razors I’ve used have made any difference one way or another.

So if anyone has ever had the same problem with the Billie cartridges popping off of the razor handle while shaving, I would appreciate any helpful input or even just to hear that I’m not the only one!

And I would be so thankful if anyone can make any suggestions for the ingrown hair and razor bumps issues! Any recommendations for a razor that might be better for me to try. 😁

“I also have had an issue with excessive ingrown hairs and razor bumps on my legs for about the last 10 years. I haven’t ever been able to determine why but none of the many razors I’ve used have made any difference one way or another.”

I’ve had this my entire life and it took years to discover what it is — keratosis pilaris. “This condition develops when the skin produces too much of a protein called keratin, which can block hair follicles and cause bumps to develop.” It’s an extremely common and benign skin condition, but it seems to affect people’s arms more, so my googling about legs took awhile for me to figure it out.

The best solution I’ve found is lots of exfoliation to keep the keratin plugs from trapping the hair follicles. There’s specific lotions to help with this, such as AmLactin. I hope this helps you!!

Hey Tiffany!! I’m on the search now to change from Billie due to your EXACT ISSUE with the cartridges ALWAYS falling out. It wasn’t like this at first and I remember thinking I could go a couple of days before shaving again. Not anymore. I was headed to DSC, but now I have no idea where to go and I need razors SOON!! You are NOT the only one my dear! Not sure on the ingrown hairs other than shaving against the hair, which we already know. I’m gonna read the rest of these comments and pray to the razor gods, chuckle. <3

I just cancelled my subscription to DSC, not because of their products but for the stupid issues they kept giving me with processing my orders and shipping. With every order it was a struggle to get it… I’m going to try Athena Club after seeing the bad reviews for Billie
