Pearlesque Box February 2019 Review

This month's featured brand is Honua Hawaiian Skincare. Pearlesque Box featured them a little over a year ago as well but have included different products this time.

Kapua Browning founded Honua Hawaiian Skincare in 2015, when the demand for her Hawaiian crafted products grew beyond her treatment room. Born and raised on O‘ahu as an avid surfer and beach girl, Kapua began to notice sun damage and pigmentation in her own complexion as early as her 20’s. In an attempt to take care of her skin, she became passionate about beauty and began to train in aesthetics and learn about traditional Hawaiian healing and medicinal herbs. After a decade of experience as a licensed esthetician, and extended training in herbalism and product development, Browning began the building blocks for her own hand-crafted skincare collection, Honua Skincare.

The opposite side of the info card details the included items, how to use them, their price, and a #pearltip.

I was excited to see this brand featured since I'm already familiar with some of their products and both of these are new to me!

Honua Hawaiian Skincare Pa'akai Cleansing Cream, 4 oz. - Retail Value $42.00

The first of two items this month is a VERY generous 4-ounce size of their cleansing cream. I normally use a foaming cleanser but recently found a cleansing oil that I liked, so I'm warming to these more foreign-to-me variations.

The cleanser itself is a super pretty baby pink color and has the consistency of a slightly oily lotion. I can immediately feel how moisturizing this cleanser is as I massage it into my face and it has a really light pleasant feel as well as scent. After rinsing clean, my face doesn't feel squeaky clean but touchably soft. I'm tempted to not even use a moisturizer afterward but I do anyway to make sure my skin gets everything it needs. This is a really gentle cleanser and I also love how it looks in my medicine cabinet.

The three featured ingredients are pa’akai (Hawaiian Salt) which is "full of naturally occurring minerals, salt strengthens the skin, improves overall hydration and improves the texture through exfoliation.", aloalo (hibiscus) which is a "natural source of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and help exfoliate skin, control breakouts, and speed up cell turnover", and limu (seaweed extract) which is "full of antioxidants, it’s great at promoting tissue regeneration and creating skin elasticity. It’s anti-inflammatory properties make it great for all skin types, but especially for those with sensitive or allergy prone skin".

Their packaging is 100% recyclable or compostable and uses vegetable ink and folds out with a wealth of information.

The inside urges you to "spread the aloha spirit worldwide".

Honua Hawaiin Skincare Olena Beauty Oil, 1 oz. - Retail Value $48.00

As I mentioned earlier, I've had a few positive run-ins with the Honua brand before and received their Aloha Youth Serum twice (Pearlesque Box January 2018 as well as a Hawaiian Beauty Box). I really consider it a gateway product to the world of serums and face oils, so I was very fond of it. I got the second bottle right after finishing the first so I was tickled.

This particular product is a little different as it's a beauty oil. Main ingredients here are ʻŌlena (Hawaiian turmeric) which "helps to treat the root of aging, acne, dehydration, sun damage/hyperpigmentation, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea", Noni (a Hawaiian grown fruit) which is "one of the most powerful antioxidants on record and is known for its wound-healing properties. It is a natural source of Vitamin C & Selenium making it very effective in skincare", Kukui & Kamani Oils which are "packed with essential fatty acids and antioxidants. They help hydrate the skin and promote the production of collagen and elastin. Ancient Hawaiians used them for protection from the sun/environment", and finally cacao which is "a powerful antioxidant that enhances the formula".

I am loving all of the turmeric-based skincare I've been receiving lately so this is right in line with my interests. The oil is thin and light but a little goes a long way. Just a third of a dropper or so is more than enough to cover my fave and neck and it seems to absorb rather quickly. After using it, I'm able to immediately add my SPF moisturizer to start my day.

Like all of their products, their packaging unfolds to give you information about how they support local Hawaiian farmers and donate not only time but a portion of the proceeds to replenish the native plants used in their products, as well as educate the importance of Hawaiian culture, and help clean up the ocean.

The inside design is so pretty and really gives you insight into how they want to impact the world with their business.

Verdict: This month's Pearlesque Box was a treat since I got to revisit a skincare brand I love but get to try some different products of theirs. I'm very happy with both the cleanser and the beauty oil, both of which will get a ton of use by me.

I am loving this brand! I did a head to head of the oil vs Sunday Riley’s CEO turmeric that I got in Allure. I put each oil on half my face for a week and Honua has won so far. My skin is smoother and softer and less oily (soaks in better). Not a huge difference but it isn’t as pricey so definitely a repeat buy for the future and I‘m going to try out the rest of the line. CEO does win on smell as it is pretty light while Honua has a stronger turmeric scent. But that probably means there’s a higher percentage of the ingredient.

This was my first pearlesque box and I was very Impressed, I loved these products. I even bought the beauty water to add to it, and I might just have to get the youth serum too….and maybe the SPF lol. I usually don’t like cream cleansers because I feel they never fully clean my skin, but this one is SOOO nice, it’s light and soft and smells like roses, and when I used just this cleanser it didn’t leave a residue at all, which most cream cleansers do. I usually use herbivore’s pink clay soap on my face, and man oh man, the two go together like bees and honey. I use the pink clay soap and then this cleanser the beauty water and oil and I have never had anything feel so amazing on my skin. I’m in love or in aloha I should say <3

Love the items in this month’s box. Mine arrived in a plain white box with a nice note explaining they are exploring more environmentally friendly packaging for their monthly subscription. I like that they are making this change

This is an amazing oil… between this and Modicum… and the creaminess of the cleanser. This brand is a repurchase for me after two uses …. I’m in love …
