First Impressions

I was definitely enticed a little bit by this month's bright and cheery cover and also intrigued by the mystery aspect of this story. Of course, it also didn't hurt that it takes place on a tropical island, a place I could definitely envision myself enjoying right now as we are in the midst of winter here on the east coast!

Book Summary from Amazon:

ONE ISLAND

Beautiful, wild, and strange―Meroe Island is a desolate spot in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with a mysterious history of shipwrecks, cannibalism, and even rumors of murder. It’s the perfect destination for the most adventurous traveler to escape everything... except the truth.

SIX VISITORS

Six stunning twentysomethings are about to embark on a blissful, free-spirited journey―one filled with sun-drenched days and intoxicating nights. But as it becomes clear that the group is even more cut off from civilization than they initially thought, it starts to feel like the island itself is closing in, sending them on a dangerous spiral of discovery.

COUNTLESS SECRETS

When one person goes missing and another turns up dead, the remaining friends wonder what dark currents lie beneath this impenetrable paradise―and who else will be swept under its secluded chaos. With its island gothic sensibility, sexy suspense, and spine-tingling reimagining of an Agatha Christie classic, Reckless Girls will wreck you.

My BOTM Pick for January

Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins - Retail Value $27.99 (On sale for $22.49)

This was another book that I found so easy to get into. As soon as I began this, I couldn't put it down. Lux was such an easy character to appreciate and the whole premise of the story was interesting and different. Every character is just a bit too unknown to trust and I could see this going in a billion different directions at first since I wasn't sure which character to be suspicious of the most. There are some eerie undertones but nothing to really grab onto at first even though you can sense the shift coming.

The main drama in the story unfolded rather quickly and was separated into chapters of Before, Now, and After. The Before gave just a bit of insight into the past of each of the girls on the trip while the Now was limited to Lux and her perspective. While I enjoyed reading this, I did feel like it wrapped up rather quickly, and even though there was a ton of action to take in, it felt like it was almost rushed and glossed over. Overall, the story was just as unsettling as the island and its history, but the sporadic moments of paradise and enjoyment in between balanced it out so as to not make it feel like a true thriller.

So did I like this story? I don't know! I enjoyed reading it and was definitely caught up in all of the moments, but I'm not sure about how I feel about the way this story ended. It just doesn't feel as wrapped up as I would have liked.

Key Takeaways

This book will look great sitting anywhere in your home to invoke thoughts of sunshine and paradise, but will the ending satisfy you? I honestly don't know! This book is worth the read if you want something a little bit different that will captivate you quickly and be easy to get through. It's different and entertaining, so I think I would still recommend it, but this is one that you might want to save for book club because I'm left wanting to discuss the events with someone who also read this!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

I skipped my BOTM for January because I’m a few months behind and didn’t love any of the options. I already finished another BOTM though (The Heart Principle), which is a completely different genre (romance) but i could describe the ending the same way you described this one: rushed and wrapped up quickly in a way that felt disjointed from the rest of the book.

Oh well! I’m just pleased with myself for making time to read this month. I love BOTM and your reviews for it. I’m excited for February’s choices.

It’s always frustrating when a book wraps up that way! I’m excited to see February’s choices as well! Sometimes I wish I didn’t read so fast because now it feels like such a long wait! Lol. Thanks for reading, Lauren! 🙂

Thanks for the review! I decided to subscribe and was tempted by this book, but opted for Magnolia Palace, another sort of mystery. Also, it seems like this code no longer works, but LETSGO works for $9.99.
