First Impressions

welcome card

I received this welcome sheet introducing this month’s books. The backside of this card that usually hosts an activity is blank this month.

Instead, this month we received two affirmation cards. Affirmations can aid in self-esteem and can promote positive thinking patterns for kids and adults alike. I am a true believer that humans can reprogram themselves into more positive thinking, and this is a great first step. If you repeat something enough, you'll naturally start to believe that particular thought. The two cards are meant to be cut into smaller cards, and your little one can color them as they wish.

What's Inside This Box

Lovely by Jess Hong – Retail value $13.99

Ronan will be turning 2 at the end of this year, and he is starting to appreciate books more and more each day. He pays such close attention to fine details and if the book has a rhythm to it (think Dr. Seuss) he hums along and will point and drag his finger along each word. In the past two days, we have read this book so many times that he now knows when the word 'lovely' will be read, and he shouts it with me; this type of interactive reading is so rewarding for me (and him, too!).  Every character in this book is different and special, but overall, they are all so very lovely. So many skin tones are represented in this book along with other relatable demographics and characteristics which are rarely represented like people with tattoos, an elderly woman with face piercings, a girl with two different colored eyes, and a young girl with fierce yet fluffy red hair.

Discussion Questions

Little Feminist Book Club included a discussion card promoting the characters' beautiful differences. This month's discussion revolves around identifying differences and celebrating each special trait, so instead of reading the words, sometimes Roni and I will flip through the pages and point out what is happening, what he sees, what color different objects are, etc.

Verdict

Little Feminist Book Club has a great eye for diverse, empowering reads. I can't get enough of the illustrations in Lovely, and it has become an instant nightly favorite, which means we read it over and over and over again. While I love Little Feminist Book Club's service, I am always wanting more for my money. It is undeniable that this subscription delivers amazing reads for growing minds, but I'm afraid the cost vs value is usually lacking, this month more so than ever. This is my first Little Feminist shipment with only one book. We usually receive two board books (much easier to operate/sturdier in a toddler's hands), but this month we only got one hardcover book with fragile paper pages. Under my husband's watch, one page already suffered a bite fatality; I love this book, but I would have preferred two board books instead.

After shipping, this subscription adds up to $25.90 a month; if you're someone who doesn't mind paying a price for an excellent curation and content, then this subscription may be worth it to you. The subscription holds a value that doesn't monetarily meet its cost, but I appreciate what they're doing.

I’m a self-proclaimed “cool mom” who loves a little, who am I kidding, a lot of razzle-dazzle. I have been box-obsessed for over 10 years, and I am always on the hunt for new beauty, fun flair and trendy clothing boxes. A fun night for me includes an exfoliating foot mask and a bag of Dot's Pretzels while binging Rupaul’s Drag Race.
