BarkBox is a reader-favorite monthly subscription box for dogs.

BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the medium size, which is recommended for dogs 20-50 lbs. Our beloved rescue dog, Rufus, is around 40 lbs. and is 12 years old. He can be a bit picky about toys but usually loves treats.

If you have a younger pup or just one who needs toys of the rough and tumble variety, I highly recommend trying the Super Chewer subscription (read our reviews to learn more!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

July 2021 BarkBox "Highway to Howl Box" Review

The July 2021 box included 3 toys, 2 bags of treats, and a chew - this is close to what you can expect with your monthly subscription, though it does vary for everyone once in a while.

Sometimes, these items are marked as 'Sold Out' on the BarkBox app - but they have a little 'As Seen In BarkBox' section of the BarkShop where you can grab items featured in monthly themes.

Bark Chew Bar, 1.4 oz.

This was another chew bar that Rufus was not feeling. I thought since it was a chicken recipe chew stick, that he would like it, but unfortunately, he did not. Just like the last few chew bars, he sort of just licks these and then walk away. I am starting to think that Rufus doesn't like how thick and chewy these are, but even when I break them up he doesn't seem interested. This is one treat that I know I can pass along to my Mom's dogs though because they love them!

Bark Clucky Soft Bakes, 4 oz.

Rufus normally doesn't enjoy these soft bakes, but he was obsessed with this pack! This snack is a soft-baked chew that you can give to your dog all at once or you can easily break pieces off for them. They are super easy to chew through so Rufus gobbled it down quickly. This bag was inspired by dumplings so they are made with veggies and chicken. The main ingredients are farm-raised chicken and potatoes. I was so surprised that Rufus ate these, but I am excited to add these to his stock of healthy treats!

Bark Beef Crunchies, 1.5 oz.

I don't know why, but the look of treats like this always grosses me out a bit. Rufus is always obsessed with them though and will literally scratch at our pantry door once I put them in there. These treats are so simple and healthy! They are 100% air-dried beef to give a natural flavor that I think most dogs will love. This treat is light but packs a big crunch, but since they are so light I don't feel too guilty giving Rufus a few throughout the day after playing outside.

Honk If You're Hairy

I laughed out loud when I read the name of this toy, haha! This little steering wheel is so sturdy, it would be perfect for a game of catch because it throws almost like a frisbee. This has a squeaker, as any good steering wheel does, and crazy crinkle. The tag suggests taking a photo of your pup behind the wheel but Rufus isn't a big toy person so I could not get him to sit with this for a solo wheel photo no matter how hard we tried, we even bribed with fries! This has been a great outdoor toy and gets Rufus running a bit more than he has been lately.

Vin Unleaded

This little gas pump is too cute! My kids are loving playing with it to fill their toy cars with gas. My daughter Philomena has tried really hard to get Rufus to play tug of war with it, but instead, she seems to just be hitting him in the face with it. This has a larger squeaker and crazy crinkle. It would be great to play catch or tug of war with if Rufus was into that anymore. Instead, this is going to lovingly get tossed around at him in hopes he will play again with us, and for the kids to use!

Garcia The Cactus

Once I saw this cactus I knew my daughter was going to take it from Rufus. I was right! This toy is so cute and unique. If your dog rips the top layer of Garcia, you will then see his true colors! I sort of can't wait for this to rip a bit and see what is hiding under the top green shade. This toy also has a squeaker and crazy crinkle as well. Rufus does seem to play with this when I moved it onto his dog bed which I loved seeing.

Verdict: BarkBox was filled with some amazing treats for Rufus! He really does love snacking, just like my kids, so this box really allows me to stock up on his snacks every month. I was surprised that he liked the soft bakes, but I am glad that he can get chicken and some yummy veggies. The chew stick was a miss, but that is nothing new. I was able to pass them along to my Mom's doggies which is always fun. The toys this month weren't a huge hit for Rufus, but that is not surprising since he is getting older and not into playing these days. My kids love trying to get him to play with them though and getting a new box of toys each month makes it fun for everyone. This box is so important to my family because it allows us to treat Rufus. Getting healthy snacks each month is the biggest win for me so I never have to worry about having snacks on hand. This really is the top box for any doggie in your life.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes! But be quick! You can choose to start with the August theme, July's “Highway to Howl”, or a mystery box.
