The Sill February 2020 Box Review

I decided to choose the "pet-friendly" subscription option since our dog, Tucker, seems to enjoy nibbling on our houseplants. I also decided to change my planter color to "mint" this month. You can swap planter colors every month if you so desire!

The plant was very carefully packaged, just like always. There was a special insert around the base of the plant to protect its roots and keep the dirt in place. And a heating pack was included since the winter months aren't awesome for shipping a plant.

There was an envelope with some additional info on my new friend. It included a card with information specific to the type of plant inside as well as an additional sheet with care instructions related to what the plant might need right away as it has just spent a few days in a dark box.

Bird's Nest Fern in Small Mint Balboa Planter – Retail Value $39.00

FYI: This plant arrived about 7 inches tall inside the planter, and about 10 inches across.

Look at this cutie! I adore ferns and especially love the ones with a little personality. These wavy long leaves have loads of it! I also am smitten with this new style of planter called 'Balboa.' It is also named after Balboa Park in San Diego, which I used to live a few blocks down from. This is a really adorable pairing and I am happy I went with the mint color this month as I love it combined with both this fern and the planter style.

I love the way these long leaves reach towards the light. This is a medium-light plant baby which is great for both my office and my home, depending on where I decide to place it. I feel like this is just calling to be on my bedside table...

The Verdict: My February The Sill delivery is one of my favorites! I loved this quirky little fern and the planter that seemed to feel much more special and unique than so many of their others. (Still holding out for universal drainage holes though!) I hope that future months will feel this special! Value-wise, we essential broke even.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first plant and pot combo will be from the March selections.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I’m glad to see the planter is a little more interesting this month with the ridged texture! I love bird’s nest ferns. I had one but killed it (ferns are hard IMO … they like a LOT of water/humidity). Hope you have good luck with it!

I will repeat myself again this month and say I think this sub is way overpriced, but other commenters have good points about how it works for some people. I especially like the idea of sending one as a gift.

I sent one instead of flowers a few months ago. It was so much cheaper than an arrangement and it will last longer, unless my friend manages to kill it!

I’m not here to comment about the value or quality of this subscription; I just genuinely want to know what percentage of Megan’s day is devoted to watering plants?

I really like this little guy! He has some personality.
I really think I would like it better if they had more unique planters.

What a lovely plant!! I totally agree that a lot of the posts related for this subscription are plants you might be able to get for less at a local greenhouse or big box store. I look at this subscription and this store a bit differently. While I have not joined the subscription, I have purchased several plants from this company. What I pay for is a high-quality, pest-free plant that has been lovingly planted into a planter with the appropriate planting medium and lava rocks (for drainage) and the convenience of not needing to go out and purchase anything or get my hands dirty. I just unwrap the very well-protected plant and enjoy it immediately, without leaving my house. I look at this the same way as preparing a chicken dish at home versus having a meal delivered from a local restaurant. Buying a raw chicken breast is pretty cheap. I need to go to the store to get it and pickup all the spices and other ingredients for the dish, the total out of pocket cost is probably $4 or less. Then, I need to cook it. Having a chicken dish delivered to my house from a local restaurant, with the delivery fee, is probably $20. So much more money, so much less work for me!! It’s a matter of personal preference really. This isn’t a subscription similar to FatFitFun where you are receiving products at a discount.

What a cutie!!
But $35 feels steep for a plant I’m not physically picking myself, and I’m not sure how big their roots get, but it looks like that lil guy may very soon outgrow the pot that was sent.

I know someone always posts this everytime this sub is reviewed… but man is the value off with this box. A birds nest fern can easily be bought at any big box store for under 10 and so can the pot. Maybe if the plant was hard to find or unique, maybe this sub would be worth it. But its just overpriced big box store options.

Not everyone can physically get to (or has time to get to) a store, not everyone lives near a big box store, and furthermore, not everyone is willing to patronize big box stores. Plus, do you know the cost to send a plant to someone? I’ve found it near impossible to find a florist who has interesting plants (ie – something other than pothos or bamboo) in nice containers (eg – not a colored-foil wrapped nursery pot with a bow) at a price anywhere near this one. This may not be a sub for everyone (which ones are?) but it certainly fills a gap.

I buy my plants a local nursery where I know I’ll get good quality, healthy, and disease-free plants. They also have a guarantee to live for at least a month, provided they are not abjectly abused. For a plant that is already potted in good quality soil, in an attractive pot, Sill’s is certainly not out of line, especially when you factor in the cost of packaging and shipping. Certainly, I’d have no problem paying for this service next time I want to send someone a plant.

Im in agreement with you here. We live inna very small, rural town. Nearest place to shop for plants, planters, ANY supplies really, is abut 15 miles away. We have one car n my fella drives that 1 1/2 hrs each way to n from work. Leaves at 430am, arrives back home around 7pm. Last thing im gonna ask him to do is take me plant shopping (although he WOULD if I asked) AND he works 6 days a week
Sooo.. No, this subscription may not be for EVERYONE, but for some of us it checks all the necessary boxes. I havent subscribed yet but this month’s review has me seriously considering doing so. Last thing I need is another eyeshadow palette. Lol. Id rather havva plant this time around.
