Look Fantastic May 2019 “Urban Beauty” Review
Each box comes with a booklet that tells you more about the products included with tips on how to use them. This month’s theme is ‘Urban Beauty’ and the bright coral box is giving me life! I always love keeping Look Fantastic boxes around to store makeup, jewelry, and other important things in because they are always so sturdy and beautiful.
This booklet always has a detailed list of all of the products in each box along with helpful and informative information on each one.
We also received a few UK exclusive promos.
Now, on to the items!
This cream smells awesome. Sweet and leafy at the same time, but also like soap. It is a peachy sherbert color straight out of the tube, but no worries, it doesn’t leave any orange after you rub it in. It was a great cream to wear under my makeup during the day and absolutely did even out my skin tone. It absorbs very quickly but you can still feel the formula on top of your skin. Formulated with Siberian Olive Tree extract, the 108 (!) bioactive elements in this formula (along with a big dose of salicylic acid) boasts the ability to help with skin cell turnover, meaning fresher skin.
Mellow Lipliner in ‘Aria’ – Retail Value $12.00
I immediately liked this pretty terracotta shade and I was excited that this pencil was a gel formula. It went on my lips smooth as silk, and I rather liked the peachy brick color. I feathered it inwards then topped off with a favorite clear gloss. For me, the gloss was important because this gel pencil somehow turns completely matte! The look was a little 90s lip liner but in a good way, as the edges of my lips were darker than the center, but just ever so slightly!
I enjoy a hair mask, but only on my ends. My hair has a lot of texture because it is wavy and also because I have a ton of white hairs which are very coarse. (I started going grey at 13!) I really like the natural texture of my hair and though it is super thick, my roots can get oily really fast. I tried this mask in the shower after shampooing. I then let it sit for about 8 minutes while I shaved my legs then rinsed it out. I then towel dried and slept on it damp, as I usually do. My hair the next morning has a new sort of gloss to it but wasn’t so soft that all of my shape and texture was gone. It also was MUCH smoother and less frizzy. I really liked the scent, somewhat fruity and creamy, but tart too. For the price, this is a really great hair mask that I would absolutely recommend. Feel free to apply it to dry hair and leave on for longer if your hair is majorly stressed out!
Avant Eight-Hour Anti-Oxidising & Retexturing Hyaluronic Facial Serum, 30ml – FULL SIZE! Retail Value $121.00 (currently on sale for $97.00)
This is the big ticket item in this box. I have tried the Avant Night Cream back in the January Glossybox, and I liked it very much! Worth noting about this tube is that though it is full size, they usually send much less fancy packaging in subscription boxes. This kind of explains why a rather luxe cream looks a little ordinary! This serum smells fantastically botanical but in a very soft petal sort of way. It is full of hyaluronic acid which gives your skin a significant moisture bounce and this stuff would be great for before bed or before makeup, especially if you struggle with flakes under your foundation. While I always enjoy this brand, I still feel the pricing is a little high, especially with tons of great hyaluronic alternatives out there at more affordable price points. Either way, it always feels special to receive an expensive serum like this in an affordable box.
MineTan Gradual Tan Color Extender, 30ml – Estimated Value $3.04 (Buy a full size 237 ml here for $18.00- on sale from $24.00 originally)
I fully planned on testing this product out. I mean, I have even self tanned a single leg before, and in skirt season! I applied this to a spot on my arm and gave it a day, and nothing. Zilch. What did I do wrong? I reread the instructions and noticed it can take a few days for any tanning to happen. DAYS. The other formulas I have tried take a few hours to start seeing results, so I am not entirely sure what the hold up is here. This formula absorbs quickly and isn’t greasy, but the scent is borderline overpowering, even for me. I am in no way a self-tanning expert, but I think there are better options out there!
skinChemists Rose Illuminating Glow Hydrogel Eye Pads, 1 pair – Estimated Value $9.30 (buy 5 pairs here for $46.50)
Lastly, we received a pair of eye pad masks that were full of pink shimmer. This is another item with hyaluronic acid as its star player, and I personally love using this hydrating acid on the delicate skin around my eyes because it almost always gives my tired skin immediate firmness and hydration. These gel pads felt a little drier than I would have preferred, but they did indeed make my under eye skin much less dull than before use.
And this box includes the latest issue of Elle UK Magazine:
Retail Value $5
The Verdict: This month’s Look Fantastic Beauty Box had that one big power player hero item that made all of the other items feel like extra bonuses. Who doesn’t want to get $121 serum in a $19 box? Of course, that high-value Avant serum was my favorite, and I look forward to testing it out more. The other clear winners for me this month were the hair mask and lip liner. The only thing I really didn’t love was the self-tanning lotion, but really, who has that much time to wait for a fake bake? The value of this box is around $172.29 (not including the magazine), which is crazy for a $19 box.
To Wrap Up:
Value Breakdown: At $19 for this box, here is approximately what you are paying per product:
- Polaar Cream $2.56
- Mellow Lip Liner $1.32
- Wella Hair Mask $0.41
- Avant Serum $13.34
- Minetan Lotion $0.34
- Skinchemists Eye Pads $1.03
Alternatively, the average cost of each of the 6 items is $3.17.
