See New: The Skincare Box – 2021 In Review

See New: The Skincare Box is, in my humble opinion, the box for anyone who wants to completely immerse themselves in a specific brand with a full routine. It is the sort of box that only sends full-size items and vets each brand and formula before selecting brands to feature. And with two subscription tiers, it is sure to please both the skincare minimalist and the maximalist while still being a bi-monthly subscription! 2021 delivered six wonderfully curated boxes that all felt very special and exciting. Let's take a look back!

About See New: The Skincare Box

See New: The Skincare Box is a bi-monthly skincare subscription focused on highlighting both new brands and cult favorites.

See New offers two beauty subscription boxes:

  • The Skincare Box - $56 (effective 1/1/2022 the pricing will increase from $47) for 4-5 items for whole body care
  • The Essentials - $37 for 2-3 items for more minimalist care

Both beauty subscription boxes focus on a single brand for each month, such as Tbg, Dirty Lamb, and Aster Raine, and include beauty products like lip scrub, cleaning oil, toner, and serum. See New Skincare is the ideal beauty subscription for people who are looking to clean up their beauty routine, and use more sustainably sourced products.

What See New: The Skincare Box Got Right in 2021

High-Quality Brands

If you are an ingredient-conscious skincare addict, this is a box you can't miss. Each brand is vetted by the (college sweetheart!) founders, and selected for their performance ingredients and ethical supply chains. And because each box features a single brand, you get to do a brand deep-dive and try the products out long term, giving you a real feel for the brands themselves and how their products work.

Value

At the $37 or the $56 price point, there is a ton of value inside this box (even when you factor the price increase with The Skincare Box). If you have ever found yourself staring wide-eyed at the colorful shelves in Sephora, and doing mental budget gymnastics to figure out how to afford that cleanser, that serum, a cream, and maybe a mask without going bankrupt, you know how intimidating the cost of a full routine can be. See New makes this easy, affordable, and stress-free.

Extra Surprises

This last year introduced The Essentials option for this subscription which is tailored to subscribers who want high-quality and full-size items but have a more minimal approach to skincare. We also saw See New launch its own web store (subscribers save 20%!) and the release of a gorgeous coffee table book about skincare. See New is full of amazing surprises that add to the value and fun of the brand and mirror the interests and tastes of their subscribers.

What I Would Like to See in 2022

For 2022, I would love to see See New: The Skincare Box branch out into something like a makeup subscription. I already trust their vision and vetting process for skincare, so venturing out into makeup would be incredible! I also look forward to discovering even more small and indie brands I never knew I needed in my life.

My Favorite Products from See New: The Skincare Box in 2021

Aster Raine Firm & Glow Facial Oil - $34.00

From May/June 2021:

This is a pretty straightforward oil that I really liked. The main ingredient here is rosehip seed oil, one of my absolute favorites for a few reasons. First, it is a drier oil, meaning it absorbs easily and won’t leave you terribly greasy. It also has loads of fatty acids which are a dream for dull and dry skin, like mine! The other ingredients are antioxidant-rich pomegranate extract and essential oils of geranium and frankincense (both are anti-inflammatory). This is a stronger scented oil, but I am way into it.

Light Mist Facial Toner – $30.00

From March/April 2021:

I love, love, love a mist! I use them all the time. And this one is a very generous size inside a beautifully minimal glass bottle. Many mists I have tried are great for refreshing your face and adding hydration, and this one does both very well thanks to the rose water and aloe inside. In addition, this mist also has antioxidant-rich vitamin C for brightening, lactic acid for exfoliation, and moisturizing sodium PCA. I am always using mists on my face, but especially in the summertime, it’s a nice treat to chill something like this in the fridge and then mist your face, shoulder, and neck as needed for a refreshing and hydrating boost.

Skin Essence Organic Rosehip Oil – $25.00

From January/February 2021:

Many of you know I am a huge facial oil fan and I use them daily! I also use a lot of oils for facial massage with my hands and different tools like cold globes or a Gua Sha. Rosehip oil is such a wonderful choice for the face because it has loads of essential fatty acids that boost your skin’s overall hydration levels and improve texture. The vitamin and antioxidant levels in this stuff is off the charts meaning it helps prevent aging along with fading fine lines over time. It also isn’t likely to clog pores because it has a super low comedogenic rating. So, lots of reasons to love this stuff! This oil is a golden shade and has a very slight nutty yet sharp scent that is pleasant. You can use this on your face or really anywhere that you feel dry, including elbows, knees, and cuticles.

Dew Drops Enzymatic Cleansing Gel – $69.00

From July/August 2021:

The first thing I noticed about this absolutely gorgeous cleanser was the wildly unique texture. It is some sort of magical gel/oil/balm hybrid and unlike anything I have tried before. It takes just a little to massage onto your face and start a decadent cleansing process. I actually found that I love using this on dry skin, but it works just as well on damp. It emulsifies when you add water and turns just a little milky, washing away dirt and oil and exfoliating without stripping your skin. It also leaves some great stuff behind, like antioxidants, nurturing oils, and conditioning plant extracts. It has a bright tart scent that reminds me of sunshine and citrus.

Dirty Lamb Apricot Cleansing Oil – $42.00

From September.October 2021:

I adore oil cleansers and use them daily. They are perfect for all skin types (yes, even oily!), and also a secret weapon for removing SPF, makeup, and dirt with ease. This oil feels a little different than many out there because most oil cleansers emulsify with water to create a white sort of foam when you massage. This one doesn’t really do that and I feel like a lot more is left behind on my face even after rinsing. For me, this is a plus. For someone who might prefer something lighter, try this one before bed instead of during the day, especially if you are new to oil cleansers. I like to gently pat my face dry after a shower and gently massage my face since this stuff has a lot of slip. The ingredient list is wonderful: rice bran oil, apricot oil, and argan oil. It also smells incredible, with warm notes of cardamom complemented by bright ylang-ylang and lavender. This is one of my favorite oil cleansers, ever.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I love this subscription so much. I don’t need more skincare products at this point in my subscription life but I’m grandfathered in at $39.50 per box so I won’t be cancelling anytime soon, especially since you can skip months.

See New Skincare was my favorite sub in 2021. I’ve discovered some real gems that have become central to my routines, including the Aster Raine Rejuvenating Cream moisturizer and Forest Rhapsody Barrier Warrior serum, both of which I’ve repurchased multiple times. I’m excited for Honua in January, and the year to come!

I’ll be taking a break from See New for the year. My 2nd annual sub ended two boxes ago (I think). I love the discovery aspect of this sub since they tend to include a lot of new (to me) brands, however I think the last box that really wowed me was the Kahina Giving Beauty box back in 2020, lol. They seem to have really nice sales though, so I’ll definitely keep an eye out for those in the coming year, and if there’s anything included in a future box I just HAVE to have that I missed out on hopefully I’ll be able to snag it during a future sale. 🙂

This has kind of been my hesitation with SeeNew. I know I’m a bit of a “skincare snob”, but i like boxes that strike a balance between “new to me” brands and brands I already know and get really excited to get in my box. If I had gotten this box this past year, I feel like I would’ve been a bit disappointed because almost all the brands were obscure. Which, again, has value. I just like a bit more of a balance.

I am going to give them a try this year though, and get two or three boxes to see if I change my mind, as my Detox Box sub ended and I’ve been taking a break from Boxwalla as well.

I think the Aster Raine box was my favorite. I know, Megan you thought the Omni scrub was more parallel to the infamous apricot scrub, but boy I use that stuff on my face with light pressure and my skin always looks better almost immediately after. I think it’s my most favorite facial scrub ever (I always seem to like the stuff I probably shouldn’t lol). The other four products have been just as amazing.
The simple fact that we are able to try so many high quality products from ONE brand at such a great price really impresses me. My only caveat is that they require brands to be female founded. It’s seems weird and unnecessary.
