Nom Nom Review – A Fresh Dog Food Subscription
My Nom Nom Review
Fresh Food for My Best Bud
Nom Nom (formerly NomNomNow) is a pet food subscription service for dogs and cats! All of the food is made fresh weekly in the Nom Nom kitchen, individually portioned, formulated just for your pet, and is prep free.
I decided to try this new food out with my lovable standard poodle, Tucker. We have had him for about 8 months now and he is our only larger dog. He has also developed quite the appetite for quality food since his diet, before we adopted him, was mostly dollar store kibble. I am now trying to make up for the lost time by feeding him only the best I can afford, so I was really excited to see how he enjoyed Nom Nom.

The Cost: Nom Nom’s monthly cost depends on a few details about your dog (or cat)! For example, the cost is $121.76 for 4 weeks of food for a 10-pound dog. Tucker is significantly heavier than 50 lbs, so to feed him for 4 weeks the calculation ended up being around $212.84 which is significantly more than we spend on dry dog food.
Good to know: There is also an option to simply buy half portions at a savings of 42% which is a great option if you are looking to cut costs yet still supplement your dog’s meals with fresh goodness.
What you’ll get: Fresh, pre-portioned dog food formulated by a Veterinary Nutritionist.
Ships: Across the 48 contiguous states for free!
Are Nom Nom shipments impacted by COVID-19? No. From Nom Nom – “Nothing has changed at Nom Nom. We’re still here, making our meals from real, good ingredients. None of our recipes are out of stock, we’re not experiencing delivery delays and we’re fulfilling our orders just as we always have.”
This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)
Why Nom Nom?
Tucker is what I would consider an athletic dog and it was immediately apparent that he had different needs than our two smaller seniors. He loves his normal dry food but is always a little envious of the wet senior food that Piper and Charle enjoy. He also doesn’t have the best history when it comes to nutrition. I remember when I picked him up from the breeder who was rehoming him, she mentioned feeding him “whatever was around” and recommended I buy the “dollar store kibble” on the drive home because she always had that on hand for him. While I know there are real limitations in terms of money and time when it comes to the scope of nutrition people are capable of giving their dogs, I thought we could do a little better. Since then, we have found a high-quality dry food he loves and I like to add in scrambled eggs every few days as a little boost. I am still pretty interested in some sort of fresh supplement, so Nom Nom seemed perfect to try.
The Nom Nom Signup Process
The signup is pretty straightforward and quick. Simply answer a few questions about your pet, their weight, food preferences, and portion sizing. Then you are good to go!
Nom Nom Packaging
Everything arrived nice and cold! The food packs were separated from the other items by a cardboard section.
There were two cards inside, one with a guide for transitioning your pup to fresh food and the other with calorie and nutritional info for each of the available varieties of food from this brand.
My Review of Nom Nom’s Dog Food
Everything was well organized and labeled. And pretty cute!
Here is a shot of the half serving packs they sent for me to use for Tucker’s first week of food. There were 14 of these packs included. You can clearly see the main ingredients inside: beef, potatoes, eggs, carrots, peas. My pups all love eggs, so I knew this would be a hit immediately.
I added half of his normal dry food to one of the transition portion pouches and set his bowl down. Tucker is not a picky eater at all, so I knew he would be into it. What I wasn’t expecting was for him to almost flip his bowl on the first day with excitement! He has always been a lover of beef and eggs, so this was basically heaven. I did learn that I have to physically mix the dry and fresh together or he will be less inclined to eat his old dry food.
Here are the full-size pouches. They were pretty identical to the smaller ones other than volume.
Here is a full portion in Tucker’s bowl! We only did this for a few days because I didn’t want him to become completely attached to a 100% fresh diet, at least not yet. His enthusiasm for this food continued regardless of the mixing ratio though!
Here is a size comparison between the two pouches.
A few totally unscientific observations:
- I love that this food actually looks like food!
- Tucker seems more excited than ever for dinner.
- Take the transition seriously. Tucker had a little bit of loose stool the first day. I am SO glad I only gave him half and then continued that process for the full week.
- Tucker seems more energized in general. This might be because of some sort of magical food + spring weather combo!
- Are Tucker’s poos smaller…?
- It feels really nice and secure to have an automatic source of food coming regularly for Tucker. This will help me extend the time between running to the store for his dry food.
Additional Nom Nom Items
The Nom Nom team also sent a few extras for this review:
Microbiome Testing Kit – Retail Value $90.00
So, this kit is used to collect stool samples to send back to the Nom Nom lab. I know that sounds super glamorous, but you can actually learn a ton from your dog’s logs.
This is a great resource for diving deeper into your dog’s health, especially if they have had weight fluctuation, vomiting, diarrhea, or other health-related changes that you want to know more about.
You collect the samples on the ends of two included cotton rounds then deposit them into two different vials. I haven’t used mine yet with everything else going on, but I am excited to get extra insight into Tucker’s overall health, especially since he is new to our family.
Probiotic Support Full Spectrum for Dogs, 30 scoops per container – Retail Value $40.00
I was so excited to see this in the box! Charlie, our pug, has been having a bit of sour stomach lately. We haven’t changed his regular food, so I wanted to give him a little bit of probiotics to help his digestion out. Simply add one scoop to your pup’s food and they benefit from over 20 billion CFUs and 7 full spectrum probiotic strains to help keep their guts in check.
Triple Active Blend Joint & Mobility Chews for Dogs, 60 chews – Retail Value $40.00
This was another item I was excited about. Tucker is kind of terrified of our hardwood floors. We have added rugs and carpet where we can, but there are still some spots where he just totally freezes up and then goes sliding and crashing to the floor. Some of these crashes have been pretty bad and while he is showing improvement, I am happy to add a joint supplement to his rotation. Do any of you have dogs with floor phobias? What have you tried to help your buddy out?
Chicken Jerky, 2 oz – Retail Value $13.00
Aside from the actual food in this box, these chicken treats were the biggest hit in the house. Literally just dried strips of chicken breast, they are thin and when Tucker chews them it sounds like he is eating chips! Tucker is a very polite boy, and not prone to acts of begging but he does indeed beg for these. It is actually pathetic and adorable to watch! The bag is actually almost entirely gone because I can’t deny those big brown eyes.
It is true that this food is pricy. BUT it is also super nutritious and convenient. While I can’t say I would 100% switch Tucker over (mainly due to expense) I totally could see myself ordering the smaller pouches to supplement his dry food. I also think this subscription makes a lot more sense if you have a smaller dog. Piper, for example, is around 11 lbs and if she wasn’t already on a prescription diet I would totally sign her up. Tucker absolutely loved this food though, so I might have to get him another month or two, especially since I am looking to go to the store less and less right now. It is just too easy to add to his dry food and he literally dances when I start to open a pouch!
What do you think of Nom Nom? Would you ever try out fresh food or supplement your dog’s diet with a subscription like this?
