1. Date Night In Box

Best Overall

About This Date Night Subscription Box:

Date Night In Box sends monthly date boxes for couples, each including multiple creative activities, mood-setting accessories, high-quality snacks, mixer ingredients, a dinner menu, and recipes curated by a chef — almost everything you need to create a special evening with your loved one. We say “almost" because you’ll need to go on a quick shopping trip to get the ingredients for the recipes.

That said, Date Night in a Box is well-curated with fun games, thoughtful instructions, and interesting themes. Each box has a different theme, which helps keep the spark alive and makes upcoming date nights feel fresh and inspired.

Looking for something to keep the conversation and connection going between date nights? Date Night In Box encourages you to plug into their social media channels, where you and other members can share ways you made the box's activities your own, exchange parenting hacks, and more!

Date Night in Box also offers a “faith option,” which adds a Christian discussion guide. If you and your partner would enjoy that, try it!

Shipping: is free to the U.S.; international shipping costs vary.

2. Hunt A Killer

Best for True Crime Lovers

Hunt A Killer Box Set with newspapers, letters, and clues

Image from Hunt A Killer.

About This Date Night Subscription Box:

Designed for amateur sleuths, Hunt A Killer takes couples on a journey full of thrill and intrigue. This box isn’t specifically designed as a date night subscription box but provides a fun way to spend quality time together — provided that you and your partner love a good mystery and an adventure challenge.

You’ll need to review police reports, find evidence, listen to audio, and read case files to catch the killer. The full mystery is told over the course of six “episodes,” so you’ll need to stick with this subscription to get answers rather than opt-in for occasional one-time purchases.

The included materials feel authentic, and they’re meticulously planned by the box’s creators. The scenarios can be somewhat creepy, but they’re not outrageously violent. So, if you’re comfortable with true crime, this makes for a perfect night in.

If you try Hunt a Killer and love it, we’d recommend upgrading to a season pass (six months or one full game) or a double season pass (12 months or two full games). The season passes to cut the cost of the subscription, and both include additional gifts (currently, a Killer Cocktails set, which includes two branded Moscow Mule cups and a cocktail recipe book).

Shipping: The company ships to the continental U.S. for a fee for monthly memberships and free for longer subscriptions. International shipping is available, and the cost varies by location.

3. Escape The Crate

Best for Couples Who Love Solving Mysteries

About This Date Night Subscription: If you love cooperative gaming, you’ll love Escape the Crate.

About This Date Night Subscription Box:

If you love cooperative gaming, then you’ll love Escape the Crate for future dates.

This bi-monthly game night subscription sends all the materials you’ll need to adventure through an escape-room-style storyline. The adventures allow you to use clues to decipher codes, solve puzzles, and form an escape plan. Designed for 2-6 players, this is one of the best date night subscription boxes for double dates (or triple!).

You’ll get as much as you put into it — if you love a little roleplaying, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to get creative. The puzzles are always fresh and engaging, and while they’re designed for one-time use, they’re great for gifting after you’ve “escaped.”

In case you’re wondering, Escape the Crate features a new adventure challenge in each delivery. While you use some of the same puzzle-solving techniques in each scenario, the creators put a lot of energy into delivering a completely fresh experience each time. We also love that the games can be broken into small “chapters,” so if you don’t have time to get through the entire mystery in one go, you can pick up the adventure later.

Shipping: is $5 to the U.S. and varies internationally.

4. Adults & Crafts

Best for Couples Who Love Crafts

About This Date Night Subscription Box:

If you’re looking to build your connection with your partner, try building something together. Adults & Crafts is one of our favorite craft subscription boxes, and we think it makes for an ideal date night.

You’ll get everything you need to build or decorate a useful item with contemporary appeal. Past boxes have included projects like a cool geometric clock, a wall hanger, and a mug stand with personalized mugs.

Given that this box is designed for a single crafter, you may want to order two — then again, you might get more date-night mileage from working on a single project together. The subscription can be canceled at any time, and Adults & Crafts also offers craft party packs if you’re planning a night with another couple.

Shipping: is $6.95 to the U.S. and worldwide for $20.

6. Happily

Best for Couples Who Like to Cook

About This Date Night Subscription Box:

Happily is a monthly subscription box for couples that contains creative activities for developing a stronger bond. We love that it’s personalized — if other date night subscription boxes don’t quite hit the mark, this is the one to try.

You’ll start by answering some (non-intrusive) questions about your relationship and personal preferences. Tell Happily what activities you like, what you don’t like, and any dietary preferences or allergies. Happily will send out a box with treats, materials, and step-by-step instructions for building the perfect date night.

There's plenty of variety with these romantic activities, so if you’re stuck in a Netflix-and-pizza rut, this is a great way to break out of it. You might enjoy a wine-and-cheese tasting, learn new dance moves, or make ice cream — you’ll never know until the date night box arrives, and the mystery helps to make each night memorable.

Shipping: is free to the U.S.; digital subscriptions are available worldwide.

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

DO NOT USE UNBOX LOVE! They send you one box for the 3 month subscription, then don’t send any more, then charge you for another 3 month subscription. I CANNOT find out how to cancel and NO ONE will return my emails. There is not a phone number to call.

Frankly, date night out with kids especially if you have young ones is exhausting. I’d rather do night in if we can stay awake long enough lol.

Plus, grandparents hate watching all 4 kids at the same time and end up sticking them in front of the TV instead of engaging them and getting to know them. if we do want to go out it’s hard to get them to help anyway and would rather not if that’s what they’re going to do every time. 😔

Babysitting seems like such a hassle to even try and find one you trust. Hard pass!

We’re just now getting around to date nights again but seriously we do brunch or don’t do anything but talk about nothing and watch TV.

I think these date night in a boxes are perfect for us and excited to try it! 🤗🥳

Our 13th anniversary is in a few days and plan on trying one box from a different place every month and vote on which ones we like the best at the end and see if we might continue for the long haul! Thanks for this article! I can’t wait to overhaul our date night ins!! 🥂

I totally hear you on all the points you mentioned, Jessica! It’s been ages since I’ve found time for a date night out, and I can’t even blame it on the pandemic! Date night boxes seem to be a great go-to (no babysitter required- score!) in light of all this. We’re eager to hear what you found to be a goodie, and hope you had a nice anniversary! 🙂

Victoria

Date boxes were the perfect solution for me and my military husband we don’t live near family or have a ton of friends so finding a babysitter can be a challenge. Date boxes helped us set aside time for each other after the kids went to bed without one of us falling asleep watching another tv show. They also allowed us to gave deeper meaningful conversations in a safe space.

I love this, Victoria! That’s so awesome to hear. I’d love to learn about which ones stood out to you!

FYI all subscriptions are 50% off at Happily right now…so it ends up being $16.49-$20.00 per box depending on the subscription length you choose.

These are pretty cool suggestions, since If I have to do one more jigsaw puzzle on a Friday night, I might pull my hair out!
Need some new fun ideas since I’m sick of the internet and the poor movie selections on Netflix!

Celeste

Uh, I don’t know what reality you live in, but everything in my city is…closed. Theaters, shops, parks, everything. Because of the pandemic.

Reply ButtonReply

Christen Russo

Hey Celeste! I’m in your same reality—most things are closed where I live, too! This list features subscription boxes that offer an at-home date night experience as an alternative to going out. Though, I live near a large park, which has remained open during the whole pandemic—there are signs up reminding people to wear masks and keep a distance, and from my experience everyone seems to respect that. Sometimes I see couples having evening picnics away from everyone else, which I think is a nice idea. 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Tiffany

For the price of these you can afford to just go out and do something.. For the price you can hit up the movies then swing by the comic book shop for a cool bored game to take home after. Lol

Reply ButtonReply

Christen Russo

Hey Tiffany! Like Celeste mentioned above, a lot of cities have asked restaurants and theaters and stores to temporarily close as a safety precaution during the pandemic. So these are options for while folks are staying home!
