First Impressions
August is finally here, and I am bound and determined to fit in some relaxation! After a busy couple of months, I'm more than ready to embrace the long summer days and simply enjoy them. With less running around on the schedule, I'm planning to take full advantage of the slower pace.
To kick things off, we found this month's TokyoTreat box waiting in our mailbox. As we flipped through the included booklet and sampled all 14 fun and unique snacks straight from Japan, opening the box truly felt like a special treat.
After unboxing quite a few TokyoTreat boxes over the years, I can honestly say it's still one of the most exciting subscription boxes to receive—and I'm definitely still a fan!

What's Inside the Box
To welcome us to TokyoTreat, we first received a cute polaroid type picture with a note from Ayumi, the TokyoTreat CEO. A sweet addition, this truly makes me feel like part of the family! ❤️
Along with more than a dozen tasty snacks, Tokyo Treat also includes a colorful magazine packed with snack information, cultural information, trivia, facts, and contests! While exact nutritional information isn't shared, (it is on the package, but unless you know how to read Japanese, you're probably out of luck), the pamphlet does include if a food contains a common allergen, what it might contain traces of, and if it is suitable for vegetarians. A great summary of this month's box, my boys loved reading through this guide!
Strawberry Cheesecake KitKats - Retail Value $10.49
Almost every month, this subscription box includes a large bag of individually wrapped KitKats straight from Japan in a fun new flavor, and this month's variety was Strawberry Cheesecake! Created in collaboration with Baskin-Robbins, these treats even feature a delicious-looking scoop of strawberry cheesecake ice cream on the packaging, making them even more tempting.
As you can see from the photo, my KitKats were a bit melty. They had been sitting in my mailbox on a 90-degree day! Normally, I let the treats sit for a day or so if anything has melted during shipping, but I just couldn't wait to dig in, so we enjoyed them in all their melty glory.
Did it hurt the flavor? Absolutely not! These crispy wafer bars had the perfect balance of creamy white chocolate, rich cheesecake, and just a hint of strawberry. The cheesecake flavor really shines through, and since it's one of my favorite desserts, I absolutely loved them. I can see how that tangy cheesecake flavor might not be for everyone, but it was a huge hit with me.
By the next day, the chocolate had completely hardened again. While the bars weren't quite as picture-perfect as they were fresh from the factory, you could still see the embossed design, and the flavor was just as amazing. I think these rank among my favorite KitKat flavors yet—and now I'm craving a trip to Baskin-Robbins for some ice cream to help beat this heat and humidity!
Hai Sai Sweet Potato Pie
The next item we tried was a sweet potato pie cake. This round treat featured a buttery crust that reminded me of pie, but with a slightly chewier, more cohesive texture. I was surprised to see that the filling was purple, but it tasted just like the traditional orange sweet potato filling we enjoy here in the States.
With its buttery exterior and sweet, savory filling, it was a pleasant treat, although sweet potato just isn't one of my favorite flavors. The kids thought it was pretty good, too, but they were much more excited to dive into the gummy treats included in this month's box!
Okinawa Sweet Potato Chinsuko
Sweet potato was a very popular flavor in this month's box, and it looks like I forgot to snap a photo of this little baked treat before I gobbled it up!
This snack also had a slight purple hue and, admittedly, looked a bit like a little dog biscuit—in the best way possible, I swear! It had a crumbly, cookie-like texture with that familiar sweet and savory sweet potato flavor, and before I knew it, I had eaten the whole thing.
While sweet potato still isn't one of my all-time favorite flavors, this paired really nicely with a cup of coffee, and I'd happily eat another if I received one in a future box. Overall, it was a tasty little treat.
Shisa Sweet Cookie
After a couple of sweet potato treats, we were ready for something a little different. Next up was a buttery cookie featuring the adorable face of Okinawa's famous lion-dog protector. Cute in design and delicious in flavor, this simple biscuit paired perfectly with a glass of milk, and both the kids and I really enjoyed it.
Kokutou Nuts Mix
I love a good nut mix, and this one was an absolute winner! Flavored with brown sugar, this blend of roasted almonds, dates, bananas, and pumpkin seeds was fantastic. The combination might sound a little unusual, but the flavors worked together perfectly.
Charlie loved this snack, too! Hank, unfortunately, passed on it. He has Oral Allergy Syndrome and a strong allergy to birch pollen, so we recently discovered that almonds trigger a reaction for him. After hearing Charlie and me rave about it, though, he was definitely a little jealous!
We all wished this snack had come in a bigger package because it was just that good!
Juicy Pineapple Gummies
Hank and Charlie were definitely looking forward to trying this next treat. They love anything gummy, and these pineapple gummies did not disappoint! Made with 100% Okinawa pineapple juice, opening the bag released an amazing fresh pineapple aroma that instantly had us excited to dig in.
Bright yellow in color, these gummies were soft, fresh, and incredibly flavorful. They were easily some of the best pineapple gummies we've ever had!
Porickey Brown Sugar
The next snack we tried was a package of pretzel sticks. These savory little sticks were lightly flavored with brown sugar, giving them a subtle sweetness that made for an interesting combination.
That said, I have to be honest—these were a bit underwhelming. The flavor was very mild, and they just didn't stand out compared to some of the other snacks in this month's box. The kids thought they were okay, too, but they both agreed they'd happily trade them for more gummies!
Kakigori Bar Gum
Gum is always a popular treat in our house, so I was excited to try this bar gum. Packaged in a cute blue wrapper featuring a polar bear, I wasn't quite sure what flavor to expect, but it turned out to be a sweet cola soda flavor.
These gum sticks have a unique crunchy texture that recreates the experience of eating shaved ice, making them especially fun to chew. The cola flavor is milder and sweeter than a traditional Coca-Cola, which I really enjoyed. Best of all, the flavor lasted a long time, and the chewy texture kept me happily chewing for a couple of hours!
Konjac Mango Jelly
Don't get me wrong—I love jelly on toast, but eating it straight from a little packet is just a bit odd to me. We've received treats like this in a few different boxes, and while the kids happily slurp them down, I just can't quite get on board.
Because of Hank's Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS), mango gives him a tingly mouth, and after having a mild reaction to a mango-flavored freezie this weekend, he decided to skip this one. Charlie, on the other hand, happily slurped down an entire packet!
I gave it a try, and while the flavor was perfectly fine, the wiggly, jiggly, slurpable texture just isn't for me. That said, it's always entertaining to try snacks like this because they're so different from anything we typically find here in the U.S.!
Norishio Potato Chips
The kids had been waiting for a salty snack, so they were excited to see this big bag of seaweed-flavored potato chips. Featuring a savory seaweed seasoning, these chips were earthy, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. They reminded me of Lay's Original potato chips with the added umami flavor of seaweed, making them a comforting snack that didn't last long around our house.
They were even better dipped in Top the Tater!
Mixed Gummies
The next item we received was another kid favorite—more gummies! These cute little lemon-shaped gummies had a fun texture and were made with apple juice and gelatin. Both of the kids really enjoyed them, although neither could quite figure out what flavor they were supposed to be.
The only downside was that the package contained just four gummies. Thankfully, there was exactly enough for each of us to have one—even Dustin! Woo-hoo!!
Poteco Potato Rings
This month's box was pretty heavy on the sweet treats, so the kids were excited to find another savory snack. This time, it was a little bag of potato rings. Cute in shape, they were light, crispy, and perfectly salty, making them a fun snack to munch on.
Overall, they were a hit, although Hank thought they were just a tiny bit bland. He said they would have been even better with an onion or spicy seasoning!
Ume Sour Belt
The next item we received was an Ume Sour Belt. The kids were especially excited to try this one because they thought it would taste like an Airheads Xtremes belt. Instead, it had a much more pungent, tart flavor.
The plums we get here in northern Minnesota can be pretty tart, and I usually end up spitting out the skins and just eating the fruit inside. This sour belt reminded me a lot of those plum skins. It was definitely sour, but unfortunately, none of us were fans of the flavor.
Okinawa Wafu Dash Ramen
The last item we received was a package of ramen, and it was a great way to wrap up this month's box. This variety featured thick, wavy noodles instead of the traditional thin ones, giving it a heartier texture. The seafood and shiitake mushroom broth was rich, savory, and deeply satisfying.
We served it with some crispy turkey tenders for extra protein, and the combination paired wonderfully. I always look forward to the ramen included in these boxes, and I can't wait to see what flavor they send next month!
The Verdict
As you may know, I have a lot of experience reviewing snack boxes—and after several months of receiving TokyoTreat, I can honestly say this is an amazing subscription and our absolute favorite of all time! After browsing the pamphlet, tasting all the snacks, and checking out the extra online offers, my family is beyond impressed. This month’s curation was a nice mix of sweet and savory snacks, and my kids were impressed by most things, but not so much by a few others, which statistically is bound to happen. Overall, we were once again impressed by the variety and some of the best packaging we’ve seen in any snack box. We’re already looking forward to September's box and have our fingers crossed for more chocolate and individually wrapped candy fun! Any guesses on next month’s theme? Comment below!
