Little Feminist Book Club is a monthly book subscription box for kids ages newborn to 9 years old. Each month you will receive one to two books to help diversify your bookshelf. Plus, you will also receive hands-on activities and tools to help your book come to life. Subscriptions are offered for ages 0-2, 2-4, 4-7, and 7-9. From Little Feminist:

Only 31% of children's books feature a female character, and only 13% feature a person of color.

This children's book subscription sends books that highlight lesser-represented characters and teaches important life lessons with beauty and nuance.

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

This review is of the Book Club for ages 2-4 years.

This box was sent to us at no cost to review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Opening The Box

Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box. Packed snugly inside are the book(s) of the month, a welcome note and activity, and a bookmark with discussion questions listed on the front and back.

Here's What's Inside

Welcome Note & Activity

January is all about family and the different ways that togetherness can look. We were sent two paperback books this month, each with differing tones and atmospheres, illustrative styles, and styles of gathering. While it's a treat to receive a new hardback book or two per month, feeling these paperbacks in our hands are a nice change. When we travel as a family we like to pack a small stack of familiar books for bedtime, and paperbacks are perfect for doing that without adding too much weight. The activity on the back is a memory matching game that your child can color, cut out, and then play!

A New Year's Reunion by You Li-Qiong (author) and Zhu Cheng-Liang (illustrator) — Retail Value $7.99

Found on sale for $5.97

I couldn't have anticipated how much my children would connect with this book—both the two-year-old and especially the five-year-old. The story is sweet and mostly serious, but with childlike glee and special moments throughout. The illustrations are remarkable—a familiar cutout-style that we've seen in other books but with so much detail conveyed.

This story is about a family of three wherein the father is a migrant worker who only comes home for the Chinese New Year. His daughter greets him readily, but it takes some adjusting to have him near, as his beard and hair have grown. He brings thoughtful gifts. And he makes their New Years celebration special by tucking a coin into a rice ball for good luck. Oh, how the child cherishes the coin! And in the end, our heartstrings are tugged as she cares for her father in a painfully mature way during his send-off back to work.

I'm not sure if it's the magic of the coin or the connection between child and father in this story, but my kids have chosen this book as one of their two bedtime stories every night since it has arrived. A testament to how special it is!

Grandma's Tiny House by JaNay Brown-Wood (author) and Priscilla Burris (illustrator) — Retail Value $7.99

This sweet book is one that's familiar to our family from a recent library haul. It's all counting and rhyming and festivities as grandma hosts a gathering where seemingly everyone is invited—aunts, uncles, cousins, and neighbors! Not only is the cadence of the book lighthearted and fun, the end shows the grandchild solving the problem of where to fit everyone in the tiny house. I simply adore that the child's idea is entertained and used.

Discussion Questions

Little Feminist always provides a bookmark filled with discussion questions for each book included in the box. Some are conceptual, and others ask the child to recall themes or events from the book.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

Value Breakdown: Little Feminist Book Club costs $25.90 per month, which includes the cost of shipping. January brought two paperback books that cost $7.99 each, adding up to$15.98. One was on sale for $5.97 on Amazon, bringing the total down to $13.96. Regular subscribers to Little Feminist know that there is value to the book selection, welcome note, activity, and discussion questions, and that the retail value contained in the box does not always exceed the cost. But this month is particularly low.

Of note: Little Feminist offers four ways to purchase: monthly, three months, six months, and 12 months. They cost $22.95, $21.95, $19.95, and $18.95, respectively. Shipping is always $2.95. So if you were certain you'd like this subscription for a year, it would be $4 cheaper per month and much closer to the book's retail value.

Key Takeaways

For January we received one book that features quiet, powerful family connection—my children adored it—and a more lighthearted, festive one about a large family gathering. It was also fun for us! While the value wasn't particularly high inside this month's LF box, we are still getting just as much enjoyment out of it as we always do.

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.
