Little Feminist Book Club is a monthly book subscription box for kids ages newborn to 9 years old. Each month you will receive one to two books to help diversify your bookshelf. Plus, you will also receive hands-on activities and tools to help your book come to life. Subscriptions are offered for ages 0-2, 2-4, 4-7, and 7-9. From Little Feminist:

Only 31% of children's books feature a female character, and only 13% feature a person of color.

This children's book subscription sends books that highlight lesser-represented characters and teaches important life lessons with beauty and nuance.

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

This review is of the Book Club for ages 2-4 years.

This box was sent to us at no cost to review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Opening The Box

Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box. Packed snugly inside are the book(s) of the month, a welcome note and activity, and a bookmark with discussion questions listed on the front and back.

Here's What's Inside

Welcome Note & Activity

December's theme is the fun of make-believe, and how powerful of a tool it can be as we turn the challenges of daily life with a toddler into something joyous and fun. The book included is a great example of that, as you'll soon see. The opposite side of the welcome note has a make-believe adventure spinner activity. You cut out the two spinners and layer them over each other, holding them steady with a pencil. Then you spin to see what combination of animal and setting to act out with your child. Cute idea!

Off to See the Sea by Nikki Grimes (author) and Elizabeth Zunon (illustrator) — Retail Value $17.99

Found on sale for $9.99

December's book is one we are familiar with, having borrowed it from the library. It's about a child who begins to evade as soon as they discover it's bath time. The mother immediately begins to introduce creativity, invoking the child's imagination by describing a sea adventure. The illustrations really help us get into the head of how huge and real imaginative play can feel for a child, and how thrilling simple recurring tasks like bath time can be.

Because our family was already familiar with this book, it didn't have the same awe factor that some deliveries do. But in this season of gifting (including several friends' birthdays), it's always nice to have a book to give as a gift—especially one we are familiar with and excited to share in.

Discussion Questions

Little Feminist always provides a bookmark filled with discussion questions for each book included in the box. Some are conceptual, and others ask the child to recall themes or events from the book.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

Value Breakdown: Little Feminist Book Club costs $25.90 per month, which includes the cost of shipping. For December we were sent one book that retails $17.99 at full price, or $9.99 on Amazon. That's not uncommon for this subscription, although I have noticed Amazon book prices have been lower this holiday season than they usually are year-round.

Of note: Little Feminist offers four ways to purchase: monthly, three months, six months, and 12 months. They cost $22.95, $21.95, $19.95, and $18.95, respectively. Shipping is always $2.95. So if you were certain you'd like this subscription for a year, it would be $4 cheaper per month and much closer to the book's retail value.

Key Takeaways

We have had fun with this imagination-filled book in the past, and know this story well. We're excited to be able to share our new copy with a friend this month!

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.
