This children's book subscription sends books that highlight lesser-represented characters and teaches important life lessons with beauty and nuance.

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

This review is of the Book Club for ages 2-4 years.

This box was sent to us at no cost to review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Opening The Box

Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box. Packed snugly inside are the book(s) of the month, a welcome note and activity, and a bookmark with discussion questions listed on the front and back.

Here's What's Inside

Welcome Note & Activity

Our welcome note introduces the book of the month and calls our attention to some concepts we can keep an eye out for as we read to our child. They point out that there is a diverse range of folks introduced in the book, and that there are some words we may need to explain to our kid. On the back are some small tools for on-theme dramatic play: a short packing checklist and boarding pass that can be cut out.

On This Airplane by Lourdes Heuer (Author), Sara Palacios (Illustrator) — Retail Value $17.99 (on sale for $15.50)

As you'll see from a glimpse into this book, we follow a family as they travel by air, and we see who they encounter. We also learn how they pass the time. This book is fantastic for so many reasons: to give children a small preview into what they might expect from airplane travel if they're anticipating or imagining a trip, to empathetically bring their attention to the various people and their stories that one might encounter.  To give some ideas for how to pass the time. Both of my children, ages 4 and 2, have traveled on a plane before, so they enjoyed thinking back to their flight through the eyes of this book. It was a fun, colorful read!

Discussion Questions

Little Feminist always provides a bookmark filled with discussion questions for each book included in the box. Some are conceptual, and others ask the child to recall themes or events from the book.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

Value Breakdown: Little Feminist Book Club costs $25.90 per month, which includes the cost of shipping. July brought us one book that costs $17.99 full price, or $15.50 from Amazon. New subscribers should know not to expect a smashing deal from this subscription; current subscribers assign value to the inclusive book selection, welcome note, activity, and discussion questions.

Of note: Little Feminist offers four ways to purchase: monthly, three months, six months, and 12 months. They cost $22.95, $21.95, $19.95, and $18.95, respectively. Shipping is always $2.95. So if you were certain you'd like this subscription for a year, it would be $4 cheaper per month and much closer to the book's retail value.

Key Takeaways

There are so many reasons why this month's book is fun. It gives children an opportunity to visualize what they might find in an airport and on a flight, which is a great way to prepare them for an upcoming trip or give ideas if they want to imagine one. It fosters compassion and acceptance of people who may travel differently than their family does. And it's just a sweet, lighthearted read. The coordinating dramatic play activity was very much enjoyed by my kids!

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.
