Opening The Box

Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box. Packed snugly inside are the book(s) of the month, a welcome note and activity, and a bookmark with discussion questions listed on the front and back.

Here's What's Inside

Welcome Note & Activity

This month with the Little Feminist 2-4 age group, we are exploring nature in all its many colors together. We were sent two small hardback picture books, including Little Feminist's latest self-published book and a book that helps us practice Spanish words for colors. Our activity of the month is to bring the card along on a nature walk, and pay attention to the sights, scents, sounds, physical feelings, and tastes of nature. Children can list or draw pictures of what they find in each category, and adult caregivers are encouraged to use the activity as an opportunity to have a conversation about how not all individuals experience all five senses. I love that the activity gets us outdoors!

All of Me Is Nature by Ashley Renee Jefferson (author) and Kristiana Vellucci (illustrator) — Retail Value $18.99

Things I love about Little Feminist's self-published books: they are filled with tons of photographs of actual children, and those pictured represent a wide span of cultures, races, abilities, environments, and more; the corners of the book are rounded; under the front cover is space to write the names of all the children who own the book as it's handed down; the back has built-in discussion questions for various age groups. They set the bar high for thoughtful details in children's books!

This one in particular is a favorite of all the Little Feminist self-published book we've received through this box over the years, as we are an all-season nature-appreciating family. We loved seeing photos of kids enjoying the outdoors in all sorts of weather noticing things, enjoying various activities, and using their senses. With both a nearly-five-year-old and a recently-turned two-year-old in our house, we touch on the beginning and the end of this 2-4 age range in our family, and both of my kids engaged with this book for different reasons. Its versatility is appreciated!

Amor de Colores by Melanie Romero (author) and Citlali Reyes (illustrator) — Retail Value $12.99

Last summer we were visited by dear friends who currently live in Spain. They brought with them a very simple board book that introduces colors of the rainbow in Spanish. It's been a favorite this past year, and Amor de Colores feels like a really beautiful, natural next book to grow into. The book takes the angle of love being filled with many colors, as in: "red like the swirls of my favorite pan dulce," "orange like a naranja - sweet, but a little sour at times," and so on. The text is printed in both English and Spanish, but as you can see, even the English version has Spanish words sprinkled throughout. It offers tons of great opportunities for exposure to the language.

On the very last page of the book is a color wheel so that readers can see all the Spanish color words together. It opens itself up to lots of open-ended activities and games. I let my older daughter lead the way those might look. For my new two-year-old, the book is more about exposure. It's cool to hear her repeat some of the words after me.

Discussion Questions

Little Feminist always provides a bookmark filled with discussion questions for each book included in the box. Some are conceptual, and others ask the child to recall themes or events from the book. We especially enjoyed the question that prompted us to look at the similarities and differences between the two cousins' rooms.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

Value Breakdown: Little Feminist Book Club costs $25.90 per month, which includes the cost of shipping. For June we were sent two hardback picture books: one costs $18.99 and the other is $12.99, which totals $31.98 value inside the box. And that doesn't even count the harder-to-quantify benefits of the book selection, welcome note, activity, and discussion question bookmarks. I typically offer a disclaimer that this subscription might not be the best fit for families looking for deals on books, but this month we actually are treated to a deal. How lovely!

Key Takeaways

Being in the midst of a breezy, sunny June where we live, we are spending as much time as we possibly can outside. The nature theme this month is perfectly suited. We love the photographs of kids joyfully spending time in and with nature in the LF self-published book, and we've been enjoying the Spanish color words we're practicing in the second book.

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.
