What's Inside The Box

Viva's Voice by Raquel Donoso - Retail Value $18.99

The story is about a girl named Viva, who has a loud voice. Her father, a bus driver, has a soft voice, but a loud job. Viva like to go to work with her dad, where the loud noises sound like music to her. One day, her dad says he's not going to work, because his union is on strike. He explains what a strike is and how people use their voice together to be heard. Viva goes with her dad to the strike. The loud chants, cars honking in support, and people making speeches sounded like music to Viva. Her papi is one of the speakers that day and he is anxious, because he does not like to be loud. Viva offers to stand beside him and he gives a great speech.

My daughter and I do not like loud noises. (See my March 2022 review of Thunder and the Noise Storms.) So she spent more time talking about the reasons she would not like to go to a strike. She also says she's too shy to talk on stage. So it was more like a strike-out. Am I right? The purpose of this book went a little over her head and she was more concerned about the colorful details of the pages. She wondered if her bus driver ever had to go on strike and give a speech. I really enjoyed the illustrations and, of course, that it was a story about a father and daughter.

From Kind World Publishing:

Five-year-old Viva learns there is a need for girls with powerful voices everywhere when she helps Papi raise his voice on the picket line.

Viva’s Papi is a bus driver and Viva loves going to work with him. The sounds of the traffic and the voices of the passengers are music to Viva’s ears. When she finds out that Papi’s union is going on strike, she convinces Papi to take her along to the picket line. When quiet Papi is too nervous to give his speech, Viva uses her powerful voice to give him the confidence to find his own. A first introduction to labor unions, strikes, picket lines, and workers’ rights, this powerful picture book is both educational and endearing.

Debut author Raquel Donoso has crafted a beautiful story about courage, family, and using your voice to help others. Viva’s story is based on Donoso’s own childhood experience, in which her father’s union went on strike.

What Do You Think Card

Each book comes with a 'What Do You Think' card that provides questions that you can ask your little reader about the book. They are nice in the way they help you ask direct questions– something that might actually get a real answer rather than "It was good" or "I liked it."

Little Feminist In Action

This month's activity asks your little one to think of their voice, how to use it, and what animal best represents their voice in different settings. Spoiler, my daughter chose a cheetah for both, because they can be loud and quiet.

The Verdict

It's always interesting what Little Feminist Book Club will find a book about. I wouldn't have even thought there was a children's book about going to a strike and that's just it; there aren't a lot of books about these kinds of issues. This are the kind of subject you can expect this subscription to touch on. It helps start conversation you may have not even thought to talk about. I like the idea of having a small collection of these books touching on different issues and being able to take them off the shelf should something come up in our lives: death, people from different walks of life, identity, anxiety, and whatnot. I like the mindless, silly books too, but it's nice to have age-appropriate books about serious things too.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

Subscribers – current or future – will have to be understanding of the fact that Little Feminist Book Club is not a subscription that saves you money. The cost of the sub will always be a little more than the book itself. This subscription's true value is the quality of the books and the complementary paperwork, which is carefully chosen and sent to your front door. If you are focused on dollar amounts, this subscription may not be for you. The monthly subscription costs $26 (with shipping). This book retails for about $19. That is a $7 difference in value. That's pretty good for these sub.

One thing to note: Little Feminist offers four ways to purchase: monthly, three months, six months, and 12 months. They cost $22.95, $21.95, $19.95, and $18.95, respectively. Shipping is always $2.95. So if you were certain you'd like this subscription for a year, it would be $4 cheaper per month and much closer to the book's retail value.
