This review is of the Book Club for ages 2-4 years.

Opening The Box

Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box. Packed snugly inside are the book(s) of the month, a welcome note and activity, and a bookmark with discussion questions listed on the front and back.

Here's What's Inside

Welcome Note & Activity

October for the 2-4 age group of Little Feminist is all about encouraging perseverance and patience. These values are top of mind for me lately as my four-year-old is back to school and trying new things both in the classroom and at home. The book selected shows a child trying, stumbling, and trying again. This month's activity is to color, cut out, and fill in the blanks for four affirmation cards. They are meant to boost self-confidence. My four-year-old had a little help from her one-year-old sister with these cards. She has done the coloring step and next we'll work together to fill in the blanks.

Together We Ride by Valerie Bolling (Author), Kaylani Juanita (Illustrator) — Retail Value $16.99 (Found on sale here)

Amazon summary:

Learning to ride is no easy feat! But with a little courage, a guiding hand from her dad, and an enthusiastic bark from her pup, one brave girl quickly learns the freedom that comes from an afternoon spent outside on a bike. Experience the fear, the anticipation, and the delight of achieving the ultimate milestone in this energetic, warm story that celebrates the precious bond between parent and child.

My husband is a bicycle fanatic, so the first thrill of this book for our family was the portrayal of a father-daughter cycling storyline. We also live in a city with lots of bridges and like to ride our bikes along the river, so there were some familiar-looking scenes in the illustrations, even though the book takes place in a different city. The text is very simple and allowed for our own conversation to develop around what was going on in the book. The girl tries, has challenges, and then is encouraged to try again. It sets a great example for our kiddo to follow!

Discussion Questions

Little Feminist always provides a bookmark filled with discussion questions for each book included in the box. Some are conceptual, and others ask the child to recall themes or events from the book.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

Value Breakdown: Little Feminist Book Club costs $25.90 per month, which includes the cost of shipping. This month we received one book valued at $16.99, or $14.99 if you purchase through Amazon. It is known by LF fans and subscribers that this isn't a subscription that offers deals and discounts; it's instead one that parents and caregivers might invest in to build a thoughtful home library, and have book discussions encouraged and activities provided.

Key Takeaways

"Representation" in books can mean so many things, and for our family, we were thrilled to see a father-daughter combo riding a bike, as well as a setting with a river and a bridge. These familiar and relatable concepts make my four-year-old daughter connect to this book immediately. As a parent, I love that simple text moves the storyline along, providing space for our own discussion about perseverance to blossom.

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.
