LOOKFANTASTIC Beauty Box is a beauty subscription box from the UK that promises at least six hand-picked items. Each box includes skincare, haircare, cosmetics, and body products curated around a theme. It's available to US customers for $19.00 per month with free shipping.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes).

First Impressions

It was impossible not to have an immediate impression of the April 2022 LOOKFANTASTIC Beauty Box, in the olfactory sense, that is; the box carried a heavy fragrance from the small bottle of 100% concentrate tea tree oil. It is akin to a scent-sation you might experience from peppermint and eucalyptus; I personally find this very pleasing, and not too overwhelming, but those sensitive to scented products may not respond favorably, as it is extremely noticeable. Sorting through the items, I noticed I had received seven products (although one item appears to be a sample, but still, I'll take it!).

What's Inside the Box

The April 2022 box kicks off the spring season with a strong emphasis on ingredients. Filled with peptides, AHAs, fruit concentrates, and botanicals, these powerful formulas are packaged in one indulgent pastel box. (For a spoiler on what can be expected in the May 2022 box, check out The Edit photos down below!).

Australian Bodycare Tea Tree Oil - 10ml - Retail Value $6.47

As the source that commanded attention via my senses, it seems fitting to begin with this little bottle of tea tree oil by Australian Bodycare. This was an unexpected inclusion to the April 2022 box, but certainly not an unwelcome one. Tea tree oil is not to be underestimated, holding multiple properties including Terpinen-4-ol, which is shown to kill certain bacteria, germs, viruses, and fungi. Its uses are plentiful; insect repellent, antiseptic, acne-fighting, nail fungus, dandruff, and much more. However, with great power comes some cautions to take note: it's not necessarily safe around animals, and could be an irritant to those with sensitive skin if not diluted. I would suggest doing a small drop test to a spot on your arm first before applying to the scalp or face.

LOOKFANTASTIC advises to use the oil to soothe and cleanse your hair and skin, as it will help provide a greater sense of balance for the skin. I find this to be a vague description of use (LF actually suggests using on minor burns or for a toothache, but I am happy to report neither applied to me), so to get started, I applied this oil to my fingertips and nail beds where I've had a couple of hangnails and other scrapes from everyday tasks. I found this to be very soothing and healing, probably more quickly than if I had not used it, and will probably look to try it out as an insect repellent when I'm spending time in my garden this spring.

Interestingly, in this month's Beauty Box description, LOOKFANTASTIC notes this tea tree oil as being full-size and worth $11.80, however I did find that they sell as a 30ml bottle for $19.40 on their site, so I've adjusted the value of this accordingly.

Avant Hyalu Replenish Lip Balm - 10ml (Full Size) - Retail Value: $77

This product was teased in the March box - I had a bit of sticker shock then, and I still do. This tiny little lip balm is $77 - yowza! The "star ingredient" (according to LOOKFANTASTIC) is hyaluronic acid, and I must admit, I don't remember this ever costing so much! That said, my lips are thirsty, dry, and brittle after a long winter, so I was ready to put it to the test. What I'd first taken notice to was that it is much more slippery than other lip balms I've tried. The consistency is thinner, and honestly, my lips do feel more hydrated than they have with others. I don't know that it's $77 worth of hydrated, but it does make me wonder why I haven't come by a hyaluronic lip balm in the past. I will say that the hand cream version by Avant is a winner in my book (and I say this as someone who has hands as dry as sandpaper), so this one is staying in close proximity, even if I'm on the fence about the retail price.

Aromatherapy Associates De-Stress Muscle Gel  - 40ml - Retail Value: $9.17

I have to confess that I'm not helping myself with my habitual hunching at my computer. I don't get up to stretch nearly as much as I ought to, and predictably, I get sore, tense muscles in my neck and shoulders. A little while back, my husband had done some research for gels and lotions that might help me with minor aches, and came by this product. I've kept it nearby since. It's cooling in sensation, and although I think the real power lies in the hands that delivers it, I would say this is an excellent product to prime the sore spots so you can melt the stress away. I would reach for this when you have a tight muscle or knot, rather than for everyday use, but when you need it most, this one does the job.

Decorté Liposome Advanced Repair Serum Time Released Multilamellar Liposomes - 12ml – Retail Value: $28.80

This brand and formula, I was not previously familiar with. Described as "delivering deep moisture and long-lasting hydration," Decorté Liposome Advanced Repair Serum relies on multilayer biolipsomes, "which strive to promote regeneration and support the skin's natural barrier function."

I have been applying this serum to my face as a morning and nighttime ritual, prior to applying moisturizer, for several days now. It is very lightweight, and absorbed into my skin quickly. No sticky residue and it does feel very hydrating. I like this product very much, and like I said earlier, I'm always happy to receive products that hydrate my skin that tends to be prone to dryness. That said, when a full size 60ml bottle runs at a cost of about $125, I tend to expect a bit more (dark spot correction, perhaps?) to justify the purchase, especially when so many products at a lesser price point promise similar results. Would I buy the full-size on its own? Probably not, but I'm happy to have this in my skincare collection as it comes.

Elemis Soothing Apricot Toner - 50ml – Retail Value: $9.82

I had an allergic reaction years ago to a moisturizer rooted in apricot, so I was a little nervous trying this out, but perhaps apricot wasn't the root of the problem after all, as this toner was smooth sailing for me. Soothing and cooling to the skin, it left my skin feeling just plain clean and fresh. I didn't find it to irritate my redness-prone skin, nor its sensitivity. I think this has been especially enjoyable just after removing my makeup, and I loved that it didn't leave my skin feeling dried out, as some toners tend to.

Philip Kingsley - Elasticizer Booster - 20ml - Retail Value: $5.89

I wouldn't say my hair is especially tortured or damaged (it gets a little heat here and there, but nothing too crazy), so this may be most beneficial for those with extremely damaged hair. Since I didn't need anything too intensive, I used this as a stand alone flash mask over the driest areas towards the end. The result? Lusciously soft locks at the tips, so take that generic conditioner in my shower! My favorite part was that I still had some bounce, so it wasn't overly heavy, weighing down my hair, which can sometimes happen with intensive conditioners. I wouldn't use this at every wash, but perhaps a booster (as the name implies) every week or two, when I feel I could use that extra hair TLC.

Box Bonus Sample: Aveeno Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturiser - 6ml - Retail Value $1.82

I was happy to receive this sample since Aveeno makeup wipes are hands down my favorite wipes. They are the only ones that don't leave me with a stinging sensation, actually remove my makeup, and leave my skin feeling moisturized (in a clean way) afterward. I know it's not frou frou fancy stuff, but sometimes, you can get it right with ol' reliable. I think Aveeno is just that, and this oat gel moisturizer is not exception. It was a one-use sample, but not a bad one to have on hand by any means.

Beauty Box EDIT 04 (May 2022 Spoiler Inside)

I'm not always one to turn every page of the included pamphlet of a subscription box, but I find the Beauty Box Edit to be a valuable resource. Each item in the box is recapped to share a little more about what it is and does, the key ingredients within, and how to use them (a component I really appreciate, since shockingly, this isn't always clear). April's edition is all about being fresh-faced with solid ingredients, and an emphasis on hydration. Inside you will find beauty myths debunked, the power of plants in skincare, the perfect 5-step beauty routine, and best of all a sneak peak at one item we can expect in the May 2022 LOOKFANTASTIC Beauty Box:

fresh Soy Cleanser - 20ml - Retail Value $6.55

Verso Hydration Serum With Niacinamide - 10ml - Retail Value $33.58

The anti-ageing serum helps to strengthen the skin barrier, forming a protective layer against environmental damage and providing hydration for dry skin.

Molton Brown Shower Gel - Gingerlily - 100ml – Retail Value $9.17

Escape to the pristine shores of Tahiti with Molton Brown's Gingerlily Bath & Shower Gel. The body wash imparts a heavenly aroma of musky spiced florals.

Verdict

I really enjoyed receiving the April 2022 LOOKFANTASTIC Beauty Box! While I do feel that some of the prices on these items push the envelope, I do love having had the opportunity to trial them from a $19 box, since I probably wouldn't have otherwise rolled the dice on them. I would say this box might not be ideal for those sensitive to fragrance, but if it doesn't bother you, I don't think you can go wrong with it.

Value – Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $19.00

Value Breakdown:

The total value of my box was $138.97, which is more than SEVEN times the cost of this $19 box. You can color me impressed.

There are a few lines they sell which have patchouli as an ingredient. I am so allergic to it I react violently at just the smell of it. Molten and This Words are 2 brands that include it. Yikes! Otherwise, I love LF boxes.

I got a few things I wanted and I will use the rest but really wanted that Aromatherapy Associates muscle oil. I got molton brown shower gel, Philip Kingsley hair item, Avant lip balm, Verso serum, Elemis toner and the Aveeno packet. I also got a tea tree oil but not the body oil. It turned out to be a 3.5 oz (full size) tube of tea tree oil heel repair which is $16.60 full size but on sale for 50 percent off at this time. I do like my box but I hope they don’t keep doing so many options or it might trigger my fomo. Still a favorite box for me for now.

I got the same box. I was happy to have gotten the heal relief instead of the tea tree oil. All in all a solid box.

Hi Lola! I was really excited about the Aromatherapy Associates muscle gel too! That’s really interesting you got the heel repair version of the tea tree oil – I didn’t even see that there was a variation on that one. I’m with you on the FOMO. Curious to know what you thought about the Avant lip balm? I really like it, but the price is blowing my mind. I mean, I’m thrilled it was in this box, but I’m wondering if anyone could love it $77 worth.

Hi Samantha. I havent used the lip balm yet as I am in the middle of a Fresh sugar balm and a Notoriously Morbid balm. I dont want to open it until I use those up. If I have too many open then one or two invariably goes bad. Now I can’t wait to try it. At $77 I doubt I will purchase another so I will use every drop. On their website they have it in a jar. Same price and same amount. I love luxurious items. As for the tea tree oil there wasn’t a variation for that listed and its more of a cream than an oil. Can’t wait to see what results I get in a couple weeks of use. One use never tells me the whole story.

The whole Avant line is so overpriced but I love their moisturizers. Buy from Poshmark or similar apps the products you like. On apps I will only buy products that are sealed. Some products do not seal their products. I will buy those on beauty websites but not on those apps. I can’t trust they haven’t been tried or old stock.

Oh, I love aromatherapy associates!
