What's Inside This Box
My Home: My World in 100 Words by Happy Yak – Retail value $9.99
I can't describe how fascinating and rewarding this year has been with Ronan's language progression. I am impressed all day every day with the words my toddler is using, and some phrases, I honestly cannot tell you where he's even heard. He's a little smartypants! This is a book of words that doesn't really tell a story, but it describes so many different familiar items that Ro may not have had the word/visual connection to just yet. He has learned cupboard, puzzled and sofa, thanks to this book, but it is fun seeing him point to everything on the pages and exclaim each find.
¡Eso Es Mío! That's Mine! by Sumana Seeboruth – Retail value $8.99
This incredibly cute book came at the right (or maybe wrong!?) time. Ronan has been having some issues with claiming everything in the house, and I'm not sure if this book is going to exacerbate this behavior, or if he will understand the ending enough to quit calling mom's glasses or dad's shoes "his". I love the inclusion of Spanish, and I hope that someday Ronan will be exposed to situations where he can use these new words and phrases. I've already taught him a few German phrases that he parrots often, so a little Spanish will be fun for the both of us to learn.
Discussion Questions
Little Feminist Book Club included discussion cards for each book. 'Take Care' and 'Generosity' are two topics covered this month by each book selection. Taking care includes taking care of our possessions as well as taking care of the ones we love. Cleaning up after ourselves and doing activities we all enjoy are two ways to take care, and modeling this behavior is great for our kids to pick up little habits. Sharing is also such an important milestone, and fortunately for us, it came easily to Ronan. He loves feeding mom, dad, and even our dog (unfortunately!). He loves sharing food, and he often hands over his toys to engage us.
Verdict
Little Feminist Book Club sent out two books that were especially adorable. I love the inclusion of Spanish in That's Mine, and My Home illustrates lots of words that Ronan already recognized but is now pointing to and parroting the words. The value of this month's picks comes to $18.98, not quite hitting the mark on the cost of this subscription.
After shipping, this subscription adds up to $25.90 a month; if you're someone who doesn't mind paying a price for an excellent curation and content, then this subscription may be worth it to you. The subscription holds a value that doesn't always monetarily meet its cost, but I appreciate the service.
