First Impressions

unopened box

This month included a double-sided activity sheet. I've tried breathing exercises with Ronan in the past, but he is always too busy to fully join in. It was a lot easier to grab his attention when I refer to them as bunny or bumblebee breaths, so I think we will definitely be practicing these every day, especially the calming, deep breaths of a bumblebee.

Little Feminist always includes a similar welcome sheet introducing this month's contents.

What's Inside This Box

B is for Baby by Atinuke, Angela Brooksbank – Retail value $16.99

Ronan has been obsessed with babies for the longest time. He carries his Peter doll from A Snowy Day around the house hugging, kissing and snuggling him some days, and he loves to make "baby cozy" and bundle him up for a nap, too. When he saw the baby in this book, he couldn't wait to dive in. The illustrations are beyond cute, and since he is also very into identifying letters right now, he loved shouting "B" every time we flipped the page. This book identifies lots of familiar objects that begin with "B," and does a sweet little recap of each object at the very end, ending with B is for Baby.

Calm by Dr. Jillian Roberts – Retail value $10.95

This book teaches something that may not come innately to any new parent. Staying calm while your little is serving up either a tantrum or an emotional meltdown is key to deescalating and potentially helping your boo to overcome any big feelings at hand. It takes you through everything from physically consoling them to speaking in a soothing voice to acknowledging their big feelings to helping them sooth themselves with deep breathing.

Ro loves to see other kids, so he loved leafing through the pages of this book. I think it will be a useful tool to remind him that I will always be there for him to share my calm.

Discussion Questions

Little Feminist Book Club included discussion cards for each book this month. This month's discussion question hit on topics of big feelings and the letter B. We had a fun time breathing together and blowing the hair out of each other's faces while practicing our breathing, and he thoroughly enjoyed pointing out each B on the page.

Verdict

Little Feminist Book Club sent out two books that Ronan adored. We had a blast unboxing together and reading through each book again and again. As he gets a little older, he appreciates books way more and understands so much in them, often blowing my mind at how quickly he picks things up. The value of this month's picks comes to $27.94, a little more than the cost of this subscription.

After shipping, this subscription adds up to $25.90 a month; if you're someone who doesn't mind paying a price for an excellent curation and content, then this subscription may be worth it to you. The subscription holds a value that doesn't always monetarily meet its cost, but I appreciate the service.

I’m a self-proclaimed “cool mom” who loves a little, who am I kidding, a lot of razzle-dazzle. I have been box-obsessed for over 10 years, and I am always on the hunt for new beauty, fun flair and trendy clothing boxes. A fun night for me includes an exfoliating foot mask and a bag of Dot's Pretzels while binging Rupaul’s Drag Race.

I don’t have kids but I absolutely love that this box sends diverse books. It’s so important for kids of all backgrounds to be exposed to different cultures and ethnicities.
