Walmart Beauty Box Winter 2020/2021 Review

When you sign up you will answer a series of questions such as your ethnicity, hair color, skin concerns, and a few other preferences. The answers are used to provide a more personalized experience so that they can tailor your box to you.

As part of Walmart's strategy to "revamp" their box this past summer, they have started including a pamphlet featuring all of the items that could be included in the box with a short summary, prices for full-size items, and photos. Each box contains 6 of the items featured within and points out that box assortments will vary.

Bio Oil Dry Skin Gel - Estimated Value $0.75 (Buy a 1.7 oz. container for $5.99)

In all honesty, I dislike foil samples. I find them messy and they either contain too much product, so I end up wasting half of it, or not enough to finish the job. I found it interesting to read that unlike most lotions, this gel is made from only 3% water to protect the moisture level in your skin. It says it helps heal flaky and cracked skin and guarantees improvement of the top layer of skin. Did it work? It's hard to say. With such a small sample, I decided to use this on my elbows, as they tend to get really dry in the winter. I found the formula thin and greasy, with a strong essential oil smell. It sort of reminded me of a mix between Vaseline and mentholatum, but in a thinner consistency. It did seem to help moisturize my elbows, but boy were my hands greasy after applying! While I wouldn't want to add this to my morning routine because of the messiness, I'd really be interested to see how effective it is against flip-flop-induced cracked heels paired with socks at night. Has anyone used this for that purpose?

Cetaphil Deep Hydration Healthy Glow Daily Face Cream- Estimated Value $3.39 (Buy a 1.7 oz. container for $16.97)

Now, this kind of sample is more like it! I grew up using Cetaphil products, as I struggled with severe acne when I was younger. The cleanser was always helpful, but I haven't tried this particular moisturizer, so I was pretty excited to give this daily cream a go. I found this cream to be lightweight, non-greasy, and quickly absorbed. I used it before I put on my makeup in the morning and had great results. My skin really did feel softer and more moisturized in just a couple of treatments. This particular product is clinically tested on sensitive skin and is dermatologist recommended, stating it won't clog pores. For me, this product worked really well, and has tempted me into buying the full-size version!

No7 Advanced Retinol 1.5% Complex - Estimated Value $3.49 (Buy a 1 oz. container for $34.98)

As I am heading towards my mid-30s I am always on the lookout for "preventative maintenance" type products but have always purchased smaller versions because they tend to be spendy. I have not tried this particular brand in the past, so I was all about giving it a whirl. I found this medium consistency retinol to be comfortable to apply and a great match for my combination skin. Previously I have tried retinols that felt like they were almost burning my skin, but this felt extra gentle. Because the directions say it takes 2-12 weeks to notice results, I can't say if this worked to "transform" my skin, but after 3 applications I honestly can say my skin feels softer and brighter. Does anyone routinely use this?

Vital Proteins Strawberry Lemon Beauty Collagen - Estimated Value $2.42 (Buy a 14 stick box for $34.00)

If you guys read my review of the Walmart Limited Edition "Eye Love Being Home" Winter Box, you would know I am not the biggest fan of collagen powders. I mentioned before that they kind of creep me out and I just couldn't down the powder mixed with a glass of water. That all changed after I read the comments some lovely ladies left, suggesting to add it in my morning smoothie... talk about a game-changer! The strawberry lemon flavor only enhanced my strawberry smoothie, and while I can't vouch for results yet, I am all about skin, nail, hair, and joint support, so I might just have to add this to my grocery list for my daily routine!

NYX Butter Gloss in Sorbet- Full Size! $4.97

Interestingly enough, this item wasn't listed in this quarter's pamphlet, and it was the exact same gloss, in the exact same color as I received in the Walmart Beauty Fall 2020 box. What a bummer as it was the only full-sized item in the box! The formula was fine, the scent was lovely, and the color did enhance my natural lip color, but honestly, I didn't need another tube of it so soon! Mask-wearing has basically shut down my lip color game, and I would have much rather received a new item instead of a repeat. Did anyone else receive this again?

Milani Highly Rated Mascara 0.16 oz - Estimated Value $3.89 (Buy a 0.41 oz. version for $9.99)

My last item was this Milani mascara. Featuring a sleek black container sprinkled with gold stars. I am loving the outer look of this mascara, but how did it wear? First of all, I am in love with the thick bristles, and how close together they are on the wand. I am an avid user of Too Faced mascaras, and that is partially why I like this type of wand so much. I found the formula to be non-clumpy, volumunous, and to have really great staying power. I didn't feel this worked to create lash length as much as it did volume, so it won't be taking the place of my Too Faced mascara, but it was a pretty good contender! An interesting note though: I couldn't find this on the Walmart website, so it might just be available in stores?

Here are the products in use... The night before, I applied the retinol serum, then a morning dose of the Cetaphil lotion before applying my make-up. The mascara added a nice amount of volume to my lashes, while the gloss added the perfect amount of tint to my lips.

Verdict: Out with the fall and in with the winter - this Walmart box was a fair mix of skincare and make-up items, but disappointingly contained a repeat from the previous box. I was happy to try out the Cetaphil Healthy Glow Cream and No7 Retinol but wished we would have received a resealable sample of the Bio-Oil skin gel. I was impressed with the variety of brands selected this month, and was happy to discover some new favorites, but would have liked to see another full-sized item.

The total value of this quarter's box came out to be about $18.91, and we did get to try a few more expensive brands, so I think for the $5 cost of shipping, this was a fair price to pay to try new items from varying brands.

I ordered my box and a limited edition and haven’t even gotten tracking… I’ve emailed customer service twice and had no response. How long did you have to wait for your box?

I have the same issue. Ordered three of them in mid-December, two as Christmas gifts for my daughters, and have yet to received shipping information or the boxes – but they certainly charged my card the minute I ordered them! Emailed customer service Jan 22 and still no response. I am getting ready to call my credit card company and file a complaint to get my money back.

So I’m kinda mad after receiving this box today. TBH, must of the items weren’t bad, but after the last box I was hoping for a big improvement.

Last time 3 out of the 5 items I received were for Afro-textured hair, which I don’t have. I was left with a repeat of an NYX lip gloss and a little sample of lotion. I didn’t like it but I decided to just look forward to the next box.

This time I received another full size product for afro-textured hair and another product for textured/curly hair, which I also don’t have. I don’t know why Walmart thinks I’m Black all of a sudden. 🤷🏻‍♀️ There’s nothing I can change in my profile.

Forgot to list the stuff I got-
-Creme of Nature Perfect Edges (full size)
-Cantu Leave-In conditioner packet
-Mybite “vitamins”
-No7 Retinol
-Cetaphil moisturizer sample
-Bio-Oil packet

Dawn

I did not get any full size products…
Collagen crap
Crest optic white TINY sample
No 7 retinol
Cetaphyl moisturizer
Foil packet of body oil
Small hand sanitizer in watermelon… yuck
Maybe that was their idea of full size…

Would have liked to try the mascara

I received the same products you did, Dawn. I’m hoping for better products next time too.

Reply ButtonReply

Becca Peterson

That’s really disappointing Dawn. I hope next quarter makes up for this one!!

Beth

Wow this box was great compared to boxes late year and before. OMG I dislike foil samples as well. I won’t even use for some of the same reasons. They suck honestly and bad for the earth:)

Reply ButtonReply

Becca Peterson

Thanks for commenting Beth! I do agree this is better than years past…I’m excited to see what they come up with for next quarter…I know it’s only $5, but I’m really hoping for a great full sized item!

Colleen

No full size anything in my box this month. The card indicates that one of the items is a full-size (3.8 oz) Degree Advanced Protection Antiperspirant, but I got a 1 oz can. (Not fond of spray on antiperspirants but it’ll be nice to have in the cupboard in case I run out my regular sometime before I can replace it.) A so-so box with no makeup at all.

Reply ButtonReply

Becca Peterson

That’s a bummer Colleen. I agree on the spray antiperspirants….I have a couple that are for emergency use, but tend to prefer a stick.

Alison

I actually had a great box this month.

– bio oil gel
– cetaphil cream
– No 7 retinol
– my bite vitamins sample pack
– kerasal intensive foot repair – full size
– Hard Candy envy setting spray

Becca Peterson

Thanks for sharing Alison! How were the my bite vitamins? And I’m super jealous of the full sized foot repair you received!!

Darleen

So disappointed with this box. I was looking forward to this box since the last box was pretty decent. For this box, I received:

– Bio-Oil dry skin gel packet
– Vital Proteins collagen packet
– Earth to Skin coconut hand sanitizer
– Hard Candy setting spray
– Lola tampons
– Neutrogena stubborn acne am treatment

As someone who is 55+, I don’t need the acne treatment or tampons (and what do tampons have to do with beauty? They are a health product). And at this point in the pandemic, who doesn’t already have enough hand sanitizer??? This just seems to be a random box of stuff I won’t use and the box is getting away from beauty items. There does not seem to be any point in filling out a profile because no one reviews them!!! I realize it’s only $5 but why spend money on what you won’t use. Hoping for better things with the next box. If not, may be time to give this subscription a break.

I’m 62 and would have loved to get the acne treatment! I still deal with it (runs in my family). I did however get the No.7 Retinol Complex, and to my surprise I found that it really helped my stubborn acne by causing an exfoliating of my skin. It left my skin smoother and with less acne bumps.
I also think it would be nice if Walmart did an update on what type of products we use or prefer. Our needs change with age and life’s events. And I feel that by doing that they would get the samples matched better to those who could use them.

I got the same exact box… I gave the acne stuff to my son since he is prone to breakouts… I really liked the box. The hand sanitizer smells good and it’s the perfect size to stick in my purse.

I got the same box. And I’m 54. Agreed, a waste of $5. All of this will be donated, with the exception of the collagen, which went in the garbage.

Reply ButtonReply

Alice

Ha, I got the tampoons, too, and I’m 72!!! Oh well. But yes, this was a disappointing box.

Reply ButtonReply

Fran

My box contained the travel size loreal ever pure shampoo and conditioner which is probably a substitute as its not listed on the card.

Taylor

My Walmart box this time around was by far my favorite! I believe I got only one thing I don’t see myself using! I got Bio Oil packet, Vital Proteins packet, Earth to Skin coconut hand sanitzer, Hard Candy setting spray, Lola tampons & Neutrogena stubborn acne am treatment (which I don’t see myself using). I thought the tampons were a nice touch and super useful for a gal like me!

Makenzie

I received the same items and was very pleased! Great box for $5.49

Carol

I wonder if I will get this. I got the previous box, but I haven’t been charged yet. My account is “active” on their website.

I got that Nyx gloss in the fall box too and I haven’t opened yet, because I have so many opened lip products that I am barely wearing now. I hope I don’t get it again lol (even though it is very pretty).

Danielle D

Same here. My subscription is listed as active, but I wasn’t charged for this box and doesn’t seem like I’m going to get it.

Sara N Martin

I was really disappointed with my box. I need to check my profile. I was always getting the Classic box before. I’m 56. I received tampons and acne cream! There was hand sanitizer in there and a giant makeup setting spray I may or may not use. I was underwhelmed. The card showed so many wonderful things a 56 year old woman would want. Wish I had gotten them.

Reply ButtonReply

Bonnie

Lol I’m 53 but lie about my age on a lot of these sub box profiles because I do use acne treatments on my chin and I do need tampons (both for the same reason). I think I would use everything in this box.

Reply ButtonReply

Melissa

I’m 49 and need both tampons and acne control products, so I was happy with my box. I do wish that I had received the chocolately vitamins, but other than that, it was a solid box.

baggysmom

I have two accounts so I get both variations. I got tampons in both of my boxes. Like you, I’m in my fifties and have no use for them but I think I’m going to take them to work and leave them in the ladies room. I’m sure someone can use them. Other than that I was happy with my boxes.

Reply ButtonReply

jaq

I got the same! At least the tampons can be donated somewhere…I often read that they are in demand for homeless shelters etc.

Reply ButtonReply

Sara N Martin

Good idea! I may do that.

Jennifer

I just received an email today that they had to “sub” an item in the box. I wonder if that’s why they have the repeat NYX gloss?

Reply ButtonReply

SubboxinSarah

I got that email also, just a couple days before my box arrived. My box included the Bio oil, the Cetaphil, and the retinol along with 4 vitamin chocolates and a big tube of stuff for cracked feet

Reply ButtonReply

Jennifer

Got my box today, and it was this one! A pretty good box for me. I wouldn’t have minded getting the setting spray, but like everything in the box, and these vitamins are actually intriguing.

SubboxinSarah

Vi, yes I got that NYX lip oil too!! I forgot about it because it was a repeat for me so it immediatly went into the give away bin. I do find myself reaching for it quite a bit since I got it sometime last year

Vi

Subboxinsarah I rcvd the same box along with a Nyx lip oil in a pinkish/purple tube . I’m happy with this version.

Jennifer

I think I’d be good with that variation! I should get my box soon, so we’ll see. 🙂

Marion

Weird that they sent the same lip gloss. Did you contact customer service?

My box:
– Bio Oil packet
– Vital Proteins packet
– Earth to Skin coconut hand sanitzer
– Hard Candy setting spray
– Lola tampons
– Neutrogena stubborn acne am treatment

Seriously omg I’d kill for those lashes well honestly that many bottom lashes.

Reply ButtonReply

Becca Peterson

Awe thanks Kristin! That mascara really made them look a lot thicker than they actually are!

Reply ButtonReply

Jody

That is a bummer on the Bio Gel. I read somewhere about it being an award winner. Sadly I can’t do lavender so I won’t be trying it. I have used #7 products with success.

Got to try that No.7 retinol product. Love that pearl headband. I have been looking for some pearl hair accessories. If you don’t mind nme asking where it come from? Or any suggestions on wear to get some cute pearl hair clips or accessories.

Reply ButtonReply

Becca Peterson

Thank you so much Amanda Jackson! I bought the headband from Joann Fabrics (of all places) a few years ago. I have seen some headbands that have pearls attached to them at Target, and I actually just seen some super cute pearl hair clips at T.J. Maxx recently. I hope you can find some!
