Overall Favorites

Welcome to our monthly post highlighting our favorite discoveries from a variety of outdoors, beauty, food subscriptions – and more. Here are our favorite subscription box items from September 2020:

Becca's Favorite:

The Item: Mrs. Miller's Apple Butter

The Cost: Buy a 3 pack for $25.00

From: Fruit for Thought

Why I love it: I love to can and preserve, and while I froze pie packs and canned applesauce this year, by the time it came to making my own apple butter I just ran out of steam. Thankfully, we didn't go without as this box came with a jar from a family-owned company that produces it on their farm! All-natural and made without high fructose corn syrup, it tasted delicious and makes toast on a chilly morning extra satisfying!

Megan's 2 Favorites:

The Item: 2018 Speechless Cabernet Sauvignon

The Cost: $24.00

From: VineOh!

Why I love it: I had a good red wine on my wishlist for this coming week and this one arrived at the perfect time. I love the jammy flavors and how cozy it feels for a nice fall sipper.

The Item: Alamar Cosmetics Spanglish Pressed Pigment Palette

The Cost: $28.00

From: BoxyCharm

Why I love it: This palette makes me smile every time I open it! The colors are so fun and vibrant, and the formulas are over-the-top pigmented and SO smooth!

Carlos's Favorite:

The Item: Nite Ize Buglit LED Micro Flashlight

The Cost: $12.49

From: Nomadik

Why I Love It: It’s a small, powerful light. Great for rooting around in your backpack, tent, or car, or for reading to your kids in the dark. The pliable legs will keep the beam where you want it or you can do what I did and remove the legs and put the light on your keychain. Never know when you’re going to need a light.

Christen's Favorite:

The Item: Kale Pesto Noodles

The Cost: Plans that include bowls start at $95.00 for 5 smoothies and 5 bowls delivered weekly. ($9.50 per meal)

From: Splendid Spoon

Why I love it: I got to try Splendid Spoon’s new noodle bowls right when they launched, and I became a die-hard fan from the first bite! Each bowl from this plant-based meal subscription is gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free—and so, so delicious and filling. I would eat this one every day if I could!

Jessica's 2 Favorites:

The Item: Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Retinol Sleeping Mask

The Cost: $25 for 0.85 oz,

From: Birchbox The Masking Made Easy Kit

Why I love it: You know when there’s a product that you really want to try, so much so that you build it up in your head... only to be disappointed? That is absolutely not the case here – this sleeping mask lived up to all of my hopes and expectations from my very first use. I had been lusting over trying this for months, and it delivered. It is creamy, nourishing, and hydrating to my face, and the encapsulated retinol leaves my skin with a glow when I wake up the next day. I love it so much I already purchased a backup (Shoutout to the 25% off birthday sale Birchbox had).

The Item: The Entire September Fortune Cookie Soap Box

The Cost: $16.95 a month with free U.S. shipping

From: Fortune Cookie Soap Box

Why I love it: Absolutely too much thought went into the curation, creation, and packaging of this monthly box for it to not get some extra recognition. The names! The scents! The spooky cereal theme! This was a joy to receive, and I thank the FCS team for that.

Ragan's Favorite:

The Item: Birds of a Feather Project

The Cost: n/a (this was an exclusive pattern and incorporates several items from the box)

From: PotomacBeads Best Bead Box

Why I love it: I have been wanting to try beading on a filigree for a while and this project was a great introduction (and worked up more quickly than I would have expected considering all the seed beads involved). I also love the combination of fall colors.

Brandi's Favorite:

The Item: Open Circle Ring

The Cost: n/a

From: Pura Vida Jewelry Club

Why I love it: This ring is so outside my normal jewelry aesthetic, I prefer simple, dainty pieces, but I really love this ring! It’s big and different, but the thin structure of the oval keeps it from being too bold and that itty bitty opal stone adds a little bit of sparkle. Despite its size, it is still really comfortable to wear and it’s one of those pieces that draws a compliment every time you wear it because it’s so unique and eye-catching!

Abby's Favorite:

The Item: Exclusive Magic Book Purse

The Cost: $36

From: Quirky Crate

Why I love it: This is the perfect clutch for spooky season! I love everything Halloween, so I was really excited when I heard Quirky Crate was sending out a Halloween-themed box a month early. When I see even one orange leaf it is officially fall! That means pumpkins and Halloween decor and (most importantly) flair make an immediate appearance (yes, I am that witch!). I am thrilled to sport this Magic Book purse; I've already received so many compliments.

Naomi's Favorite:

Hempz Herbal Lip Balm Front for Ipsy Glam Bag September 2020

The Item: HEMPZ Ultra Moisturizing Herbal Lip Balm

The Cost: Retail Value $8.99

From: Ipsy Glam Bag

Why I love it: Hempz is an awesome brand and its Ultra Moisturizing Herbal Lip Balm is the perfect product to feed my lip care obsession. I love how creamy and hydrating the formula is. I’m also a huge fangirl for any hemp-infused products, and this lip balm delivers with 100% natural hemp seed oil. I’m not sold on the applicator but the product feels incredible on my lips, so all is forgiven.

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.

I love what that Avacado Melt does for my skin but I really don’t enjoy how sticky/tacky it leaves my face. I’ve tried layering an oil over it only to wake up with galactic breakout. Anyone have any tips for decreasing the stickiness?

I love that mask too! But you really need a light layer, otherwise it does stay sticky. The overnight eye cream does not have that issue. I use them together and it’s fantastic!
