The See New Skincare Box September/October 2020 Review

There was a second card with details on this month's brand, HONUA!

Pa'akai Cleansing Cream, 1 oz - Retail Value $16.00

I've tried this cleanser a few times and while it isn't my favorite, I can't deny it feels nice on my face! It does a great job of cleansing my mostly make-up free skin without drying it out. There is always something about the scent that I don't love, even though according to the ingredients list I totally should! This pretty pink potion has loads of goodies inside: witch hazel, seaweed, botanical extracts from roses, hibiscus, and lavender, and sesame oil. Though I might not ever add this one to my shopping cart, I still like when it comes in boxes because it is very nourishing and a great choice for dry or reactive skin.

Māhealani Moonlit Glow Balm, 1.2 oz - Retail Value $82.00

This balm was a DREAM. If you have dry and redness-prone skin, this combo of shea, jojoba, squalane, and blue tansy is a soothing skin treat. This balm is on the heavier side, though if you use just a pinch it should be suitable for most skin types. This is a thicker balm and it doesn't all absorb when you apply it, so I would recommend it for nighttime use. I can't imagine makeup would play nice on top of this! I like to slather on a thicker layer and massage before I drift off to sleep. That one of a kind blue tansy scent is super relaxing and in the morning my skin looks so soft and hydrated with a lot less redness. This stuff is also great for dry cuticles!

'Aina Invigorating Face Mask, 1.7 oz - Retail Value $38.00

While I long for the day when I no longer use the word 'maskne' in my reviews, I am still suffering breakouts along my chin and jawline. The upside to this is that before 2020 I never really liked or used charcoal or clay masks because I found them too drying. Now I like to apply a little mask "beard" or "goatee" 1-2 times a week! This is a thicker mask that stuck to my face really well. The formula is a blend of charcoal powder, honey, squalane, willow bark powder, and more. I found this a little drying (it does have alcohol inside) but thought it made a pretty excellent spot treatment, shrinking bumps, and soothing some redness. It has a very earthy scent of clay and citrus that I quite liked too.

Līhau Face Mist, 1 fl oz - Retail Value $18.00

My last item was a smaller bottle of face mist. I know, I know, loads of people don't love getting mists, but I use them constantly (especially between skincare steps) and they are just such an easy way to add nutrients to my skin with zero effort. I really wanted to love this one but I noticed that while it smelled great, it burned just a little bit. I am guessing this is because it has alcohol in it, which is a bummer. If that wasn't there, I would really love this mix of blue tansy, sandalwood, aloe, and hyaluronic acid.

Verdict: I really enjoy how See New Skincare Box delivers so many items from the same brand. It really lets you try out an almost complete regimen. I know lots of folks adore this brand, but I have to say it isn't my favorite. This mainly stems from the fact that my skin is dry and half of the items included were probably for oilier skin. Always weigh my opinion against the fact that my mid-30s skin is dry! You might absolutely love products that just don't work for me. I find it hard to complain though because that blue balm is one of my favorite products of 2020 and it covered the entire cost of this box almost twice over. I truly believe that not all brands have the best of everything, so mixing and matching the products that do work from the different months of this box still makes this one more than worth it to me and gives me some gifting opportunities too! The brands have been consistently great and the value outstanding. This month has a total retail value of $154 which is pretty awesome for a $44 box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, but these do sell out!

Value Breakdown: At $44.00 for this box, here is what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Cleanser $4.57
  • Balm $23.43
  • Mask $10.86
  • Mist $5.14

Alternatively, the 4 items have an average cost of $11.00.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

OK I know this is an older post and no one will see this, but I just received my box (I ordered it late) and I cannot get over how amazing this company and the box are. Everything was packed beautifully, they’re SO nice, the customer support is stellar. It’s amazing!
I’m seriously debating cutting out all of my sub boxes and having just this one. Every other month is perfect and the quality is out of this world. Even the box they use to pack everything is top-notch.

I am so impressed, and cannot wait to see what’s in store for them in the future. I love this box!

I just got this box for 30% off with FALL30. It said the code was good for 24 hours only. I had my eye on this and the email came at just the right time. I am most looking forward to the balm. Especially with winter coming. My favorite thing to do with balm is coat my face before I go out in the winter for a long walk or run. It really protects my skin.

Thanks for the code!

Honua products are quite strong but definitely worth it for this box! the balm is so SO good. I received it in another box and was thrilled to see it in this one!

I tried the Aloha serum by this brand and it gave me extremely painful cystic acne. My face was miserable. Love the aesthetic and the ingredients seem fine but something about this brand seems off.

The Aloha serum contains several oils that are potentially comedogenic, depending on how acne prone your skin is. One of the oils, kukui nut, is also an allergen for some people.

I don’t really know why you would assume that something is “off” about the brand instead of that particular product just not working for your skin type.

I guess I’m weird because I LOVE the scent of the cleanser. It has a beautiful floral scent to my nose. The facial mist and balm scent I don’t love, mostly because I don’t care for the way blue tansy smells. I really like both of the products, though. The facial mist I have been using as a toner. The balm I am saving for when it gets cold enough here to turn the heat on. Since I am working from home and don’t have to worry about wearing makeup, I think I will keep the balm for use during the day – I started using a heavier facial oil as a final step for my winter AM routine last year, and it really helped seal the moisture in.

The mask is the only product here I was so-so on. It is just too drying for my combo, sensitive skin. I like the idea of using it for a spot treatment. I will say, I don’t think the burning is from the alcohol (which is near the bottom of the ingredients list) but instead because the mask contains chili powder(!). I know chili in skin care is touted for stimulating blood flow as well as being antimicrobial, but it is Too Much for me.

I like the cleanser, too! It smells so tropical, like plumeria flowers. <3

Honestly I loved this box, the only product I wasn’t obsessed with was the facial mist but I can get past that!! Especially when the balm alone had a value that’s twice the price of the box! Excited to see what they put out for the holidays

I could not get past the fact that the cleanser has the same texture and scent as Johnson’s pink baby lotion.
The balm was easier to use after a spritz of thermal water to help it thin out on my face.
Overall, the box is great and thoughtfully curated.

I didn’t like the cleanser either, the scent and everything just didn’t work for me. I did LOVE the face mist and mask. My mist was gone in 5 days and I have enough for a couple masks left.

The balm…OMFG, I love it. I used a pea size amount the first time and it was way too much. I’ve used this amazing balm pretty much everyday and haven’t made a dent in it.

I loved the mask. I have the. Cleanser from other boxed from petit vour so I’m stock up on this one.

Ooh I’ve been looking at this! Purchasing for the balm alone but the mask looks promising as well!

Alice

Products that are too heavy for the face are great for hands and feet.

My mask was all dried out and filled only about 1/3 of the jar from whatever moisture had evaporated!

Reply ButtonReply

Heather

My mask was the same when I got it, I sent them pictures of it and their customer service sent me a whole new box for free. That was right after I got it though and the 2nd mask is great!

Jess

Mine too! It left it this weird texture I couldn’t get to stay on my face. So disappointing!

Luna

Oh! I just remembered… my mask wasn’t putty-like because I had it for too long… it got like that because the oils in it seeped out while I had it. It was the strangest thing, because it arrived fine in my box, and I stored it upright on a shelf, but maybe a couple of months after I had it I was re-organizing and when I went to grab it I noticed the oil had seeped out of the jar and pooled around the bottom of the jar. So weird!

Luna

Was the texture sort of like a putty? Just asking because when I got around to using their Moana mask that I received in a different box it was sort of like a clay putty texture; not fully dried out, but not creamy either. In my case, I’m assuming it was because I had taken a while to get around to using it (I think I had it for at least 6 monthsl. I thought I’d still try to use it, and what I did was scoop some mask onto my fingers, run my fingers quickly under some water (although any hydrosol would work nicely too!), then rubbed my hands (really just the fingers) together, and it re-hydrated the mask nicely, and I was able to spread it with ease on my face & it stayed put! Iirc, there may have been a few super tiny dried chunks of mask that didn’t re-hydrate, but that made it feel more like a very gentle exfoliating mask when I rinsed it off. 🙂

Tammy

This was my first box, and I’m actually almost finished with everything (except doe the mask), which is just about right, since their next box will ship out in a few weeks!

I’ve really enjoyed the balm on my face. What I do is treat it as I would a facial oil. So, after having put on serums and a face cream at night, I’d melt a pea-sized amount of the balm between my palms, and press them into my skin. The result is amazing! Note: I live in northern New England, and it’s been cold & dry AF around here, so everything in this box has been very helpful.

Do you happen to remember if the cleanser and mist were each 1oz or 2oz? The cleanser pictured here is the 1oz but the see new skincare site says we are getting the $16 one which is supposed to be 2oz

Reply ButtonReply

Luna

Hi Liz, both the cleanser & mist were 1oz each. 🙂

Tiffany

I love your forthrightness in this review. Thanks for the tip to use the balm for cuticles. It is too much for my face.

Reply ButtonReply

Jenn

I have oily skin so I use the facial mist for a toner. Love the mask and cleanser. The balm is too heavy for my skin, but I used too much of it the first time.

Reply ButtonReply

Charlotte

Yes, I’ve been using the mist as a toner, and really enjoy it. It really helps with redness and leaves my skin feeling soft. I am sensitive to alcohol, but didn’t experience any burning.

Jody

I wanted to like these products but they just didn’t work for me.

I really want to try the mask and the balm. Interested in parting with yours? Or anyone that wants to get rid of theirs holla please 🙂

I have the mask that I’m not going to use. Interesting in buying or swapping? My first name + nanny at hotmail is my email.
