BarkBox is a reader-favorite monthly subscription box for dogs.

BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the medium size, which is recommended for dogs 20-50 lbs. We recently changed the size because Tucker, our Standard Poodle, is the most playful pup in the house when it comes to toys.

FYI: Two of my dogs are quite old! Piper (the minpin) has to eat soft food and has trouble with hard treats. Charlie is a pug and a glutton who will eat LITERALLY anything. They both still really enjoy toys, though it has been years since either of them managed to destroy anything.

If you have a younger pup or just one who needs toys of the rough and tumble variety, I highly recommend trying the Super Chewer subscription (read our reviews to learn more!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

October 2020 BarkBox "Lick or Treat" Review

The details behind our items this month were printed inside, on the box lining.

The October box included 2 toys, 2 bags of treats, and a chew - this is close to what you can expect with your monthly subscription, though it does vary for everyone once in a while.

A lot of these items are marked as 'Sold Out' on the BarkBox app - but they have a little 'As Seen In BarkBox' section of the BarkShop where you can grab items featured in monthly themes.

Jack o' Lamb Treats, 4.5 oz - Retail Value $5.00

I think Barkbox must be reading my reviews because they have been super generous with the lamb and duck treats recently! These are favorites in my house! I also always appreciate them doing their best to send softer treats so Piper can also enjoy, even though she has no teeth. These little nuggets are perfect for any time treating, which is pretty consistent in our house. When two of your dogs are seniors you tend to celebrate anything and everything.

Safe to say these were a big hit.

Lamb Cuts Treats, 4.5 oz - Retail Value $5.00

We also often receive un-themed treats in our box and I suspect that is also to accommodate my request for softer fare, and it is so appreciated! We have a double dose of lamp this month which is sure to please all the pups. These are a thinner rectangle shape and they tear easily to create whatever size you want.

Again, very pro-lamb in this house.

Barry Bones Toy - Retail Value $10.00

I knew this toy would be a hit the second I saw the words "crazy crinkle" inside the tag. Crinkle is crème de la crème for all three of my dogs. So much that I have to hide plastic bags. They go crazy for the sound. The legs of this skeleton are the crinkliest and everyone loved them even more than the large squeaker inside.

Piper wouldn't even let Charlie get a good sniff of this toy.

We need to work on sharing.

Vampy Corn Toy - Retail Value $10.00

I didn't think a toy could be more joyful than that skeleton but something about this candy corn checked every box for the pups. In addition to a squeaker, fluff, and crinkle, the material it is made out of feels kind of like sherpa and I imagine it must feel really good on Piper's gums. This toy was also a lot larger than I expected while still being perfect for both Piper (11 lbs) and Tucker (55 lbs).

Don't mind if I do!

Piper wanted in on some candy corn action too!

Simple Sweet Potato Chew

Ahh, this month's secret Tucker chew! He loves sweet potato (he has a large sweet tooth in general) so this will be perfect for later evenings in the studio alone.

Verdict: BarkBox always knows how to do a theme well and in a year when everything feels a little disrupted, the Halloween inspired toys this month helped me get into the fun spooky mood that October often brings. As usual, the dogs loved everything. A nightly battle for the candy corn is a pretty regular occurrence, though the skeleton is a great consolation prize.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yep, but be fast! New subscribers can currently choose from the October theme, the Fairground Hounds theme, or a surprise theme for their first box, followed by the normal schedule the following month.

Value Breakdown: At $35/month + free shipping for this box, each of the 5 items has an average cost of $7.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I noticed Piper’s nails. Does Piper not like anyone messing with feet?
My min pin really disliked most anyone touching his feet. My daughter was the only one who could get his nails done. Thankfully, she enjoys doing those things and is good at it. I love reading these reviews to remind me of my furbaby. He’s been gone almost 2 years and its still hard on me!

That candy corn is the cutest! And Charlie’s expressions never fail to make me giggle.
