Our Subscription Box Favorites for June 2020!

Christen Russo
ByChristen RussoJul 30, 2020 | 12 comments

Welcome to our monthly post highlighting our favorite discoveries from a variety of beauty, wine, Black-owned, and even cat subscription boxes! Here are our favorite items from the past month:

Megan's Favorite:

The Item: Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Lotion

The Cost: $68.00

From: See New Skincare

Why I love it: It's lightweight, nourishing, hydrating, and smells great! This is one of my favorite beauty brands anyways, so having a daily face lotion that makes my face feel so good without leaving a film or reacting weird with my makeup is everything.

Savannah's Favorite:

finke's sparkling wine bottle by itself

The Item: 2018 Finke’s Barrel Aged Sparkling Chardonnay

The Cost: $22.99 (or $19.99 with a subscription)

From: Winc

Why I love it: This bottle of bubbly was perfectly dry with a wonderful minerality. It made me feel like a very fancy lady sipping it on the couch while playing Nintendo in my pajamas, and my boyfriend and I made quick work of it on our recent anniversary. Would definitely order this one again.

Christen's Favorite:

The Item: Megababe Rosy Pits Deodorant

The Cost: $14

From: My Megababe Deodorant Review

Why I love it: I’ve tried a ton of natural deodorants and have found reasons to like just about every one of them—but none smell as heavenly as Rosy Pits! I generally tend to go for more gender-neutral scents with my personal care products—the ultra-feminine floral aroma of this rose-scented deodorant being the exception to the rule, and I’m just obsessed. The odor protection worked well for me, too!

Cool It Now Neck Fan for Brown Sugar Box June 2020

The Item: Izzy & Liv “Cool It Now” Neck Fan

The Cost: $20.00

From: Brown Sugar Box

ACTIVE DEAL: Save 20% off your first box!
CODE: FIRSTTIME20

Why I love it: What’s not to love — this fan fits comfortably around my neck and can be adjusted to angle the fans directly into my face. It’s the personalized, portable cooling system I needed in my life. I’ve used it while on a road trip, walking my parrot, and weightlifting outdoors. Is it a little selfish to want a fan all to yourself? Absolutely, but I think I deserve it, and we all need to be a little more selfish and treat ourselves every once in a while.

Carlos's Favorite:

The Item: The Circus Heist Game

The Cost: $29.99

From: Escape the Crate

Why I love it: It gives you the enjoyment and accomplishment of solving a brick and mortar “Escape Room” without the cost. So have the friends over, have a couple of drinks, and work together to solve puzzles.

Becca's Favorite:

The Item: Pass the Pigs Game

The Cost: $9.83

From: Together Unplugged

ACTIVE DEAL: Save $5 off your first box!
CODE: MSA5OFF

Why I love it: I am a game hoarder, and although I have a room dedicated basically to games, I have not previously owned this one. While it is extremely simple, I have discovered this game to be very entertaining, fun, and travel friendly! This game literally saved me during a rainy day of camping with two small children!

Jessica's Favorite:

The Item: Can’t Touch This! OCD Hand Sanitizer

The Cost: $2.49 for 1 ounce

From: Fortune Cookie Soap Box

Why I love it: I will definitely take all of the hand sanitizer I can get, but the reason I chose this as my favorite is actually due to the scent! It has watermelon and honeydew with a slight cucumber finish, and it makes me crave a fruity drink. I love this scent so much that I actually purchased their deep conditioner in this scent, and I would love to have it in a body lotion as well. This just may be one of my all-time favorite scents from Fortune Cookie Soap, and I’ve been reviewing this box for years!

Brandi's Favorite:

The Item: Craft Old Fashioned Syrup by W&P, 8 fl oz

The Cost: $12.00

From: Bespoke Post

Why I love it: I wasn’t sure what to expect from this syrup, but it is delicious! This cute little bottle contains 16 servings of sugar, bitters, and natural flavors like orange, and you only need about 1/2 an ounce to make an old fashioned. You just add 1.5 ounces of bourbon, ice, and an orange slice for a garnish. It was so simple to make and it’s so good with just the right mix of sweetness and flavors that actually enhanced the bourbon. My husband and I have enjoyed a few drinks now from this bottle and there’s still plenty left!

Ragan's Favorite:

The Item: From the Field Oscar de la Bird

The Cost: $4.99

From: VetPet Box

ACTIVE DEAL: Save $15 off your first box!
CODE: VetPet15MSA

Why I love it: Once again I have chosen the item that gave me my favorite cat picture of the month. All three of my senior kitties were interested in this. Madison and Monkey liked the feathers and Sneaky, apparently, really liked the cork part.

Abby's Favorite:

The Item: Selenite Tower

The Cost: N/A

From: MoonBox by Gaia Collective

Why I love it: This chunky tower is stunning! I love how the light catches inside of this crystal, making it glow from within. I was shocked by how heavy it feels in my hand, and it is my new favorite stone.

Tarte Create Your Own Beauty Kit June 2020 moisturizer

The Item: tarte Baba Bomb Moisturizer

The Cost: $39

From: tarte Create Your Own Beauty Kit

Why I love it: The first thing that’s cool about this is the packaging; after removing the lid, you press the top down and the perfect amount of moisturizer comes out for you to swipe and apply to your face. This design also protects the more fragile/unstable ingredients. The vegan formula feels rich, smooth, and really packs some hydration goodness into my skin. This is my new favorite! (Tip: If you have oily/combo skin, or are just finding that this moisturizer is a little MUCH, try just not pumping the full portion out. Start with less and see if that helps!)

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.

From FabFitFun, I really like the Cuccio Somatology Calm + Clean Epsom Salt Hand & Body Wash (I’d never pay $40 for that little bottle, but I like using it!) and the Spongelle body bush buffer. The black orchid sent is a little strong so I may look for it in another scent when I’m done with this one. I think I’m going to like the make up eraser but just started using it. The CZ necklace was way too small to show up on me but I’m hoping my niece likes it.

From the Causebox summer starter box, I’m obsessed with the La Lueuer black currant candle and my Swell bottle. From the summer box, I love the Feya white tea and ginger reed diffuser. (I hate ginger and have never had a reed diffuser before, but love this one!) I also really love those beautiful blue and green bowls.

I love hearing what stood out to you from FFF and Causebox, Amy! Thank you for sharing your faves. Also…Spongelle. Yes. Everyone loves a good Spongelle. 🙂

“I’ve used it while on a road trip, walking my parrot, and weightlifting outdoors.”

Naomi, PLEASE tell us more about your life! 🤯 What kind of parrot do you have?

I’ve cut way down on boxes, just getting a couple beauty subs regularly, but my June favorite is from Imperfect Foods: the Field Roast Apple Maple Breakfast Sausages (VEGAN!). They satisfied both my carnivorous dad and herbivorous sister.

I feel like we need a photo of Naomi walking her parrot to really make this article complete. 😉

Hahaha she just casually threw that in there! Definitely loving the image I’m having of this. 😍

I like this list! But OCD hand sanitizer? They should really change the name.

Jessica Hapak

Hi Guys!
The first time I received the OCD hand sanitizer I was jarred by the name as well. Here’s an excerpt from Fortune Cookie Soap with their intentions behind the name. Hope it helps!

Although we love being witty, cheeky, and poking fun in general, we chose to name our hand sanitizer, OCD, to bring awareness to OCD itself. We donate a portion of the sales from that product to the OCD Foundation to further research on it. We chose to use the product OCD since that is the product that the people generally will jokingly say they have OCD when the use hand sanitizer a lot, so we believe it is the most recognizable to people.

Amy

Yikes — can you imagine if they called a product a name mocking people with a physical illness and said “but we give money”? I used to give Vermont Teddy Bears, too, until they had one that mocked mental illness about 15 years ago.
Is a hand sanitizer name the biggest issue in the world right now? Of course not. But it’s such an easy thing to change that you’d think they’d do it.

tpop

This company lacks understanding. Using the name this way perpetuates stereotypes and the lack of seriousness and empathy received by people with this major illness. Being recognizable does not make a slur right, helpful, or positive.

Christen Russo

100% agree, Syndney.
