May 2020 Target Beauty Box “Summer Skin and Hair” Review

This month’s box focuses on switching up your skincare and haircare game for summer.

This info card provides a short description of each item sampled and on the flip side a Target coupon good for $3 off a beauty purchase of $15 or more. This month I received an in-store coupon that also includes a promo code you can redeem online.

Moving on to Target Beauty Box’s summer skincare and haircare picks for May!

CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Face Lotion SPF 30, 0.33 fl oz – Estimated Value $2.91 (Buy 1.7 oz for $14.99)

It is so hard to find a sunscreen for the face that doesn’t leave a white cast or greasy mess behind. Brands like Paula’s Choice and Drunk Elephant do a really great job with their SPF formulas, but I already pay an arm and a leg for skincare, so it is hard for me to justify shelling out that extra cash when the drugstore has this amazing formula. It is one of my go-to’s, and the price is definitely right! It is so comfortable to layer on over your AM skincare, and it always looks flawless under makeup. Plus, it is SPF 50! I also don’t mind the traditional sunscreen scent, which dissipates quickly after application.

Heritage Store Rosewater Spray, 2 fl oz – Retail Value $4.79

This is a totally new brand for me. I always appreciate a hydrating face mist, especially now that spring is slowly turning into summer. Rosewater is known for its hydrating benefits, but this spray uses glycerin, too, for added moisturizing benefits. It feels refreshing on the skin, but sometimes the rose scent is a little too potent for my liking.

Bioré Charcoal Deep Cleansing Pore Strips, 1 Strip – Estimated Value $1 (Buy 6 strips for $5.99)

I remember when Bioré came out with their first version of pore strips. my sister and I would set a timer and compare our strips, and sometimes we would even rip each other’s strips off, which usually led to one of us stomping away in tears. What fun! Haha! These are just the same as I remember, although I think I am a lot gentler on my skin now. I let the strip dry and slowly lifted it to uncover seemingly clearer skin. It is always satisfying to see the gunk this product lifts out of your pores!

HASK Argan Oil Repairing Deep Conditioner Packet, 1.75 oz – Retail Value $1.79

I use hair masks on the regular; my favorite formulas have detangling properties as well as frizz control and deep hydration without weighing my hair down. I honestly didn’t notice any added benefits from using this compared to an everyday conditioner. It isn’t a thick mask and wasn’t especially hydrating or detangling. It had a subtle citrus scent that didn’t survive past the final rinse. I don’t see myself picking this product up again; it worked fine, but I have a lot of others that I enjoy using much more.

COLAB Original Dry Shampoo, 1.6 fl oz – Estimated Value $1.31 (Buy 6.7 oz for $5.49)

I have a slew of different dry shampoos that fall into different categories, and this one falls into the “hair refresh” group; that means that it helps to keep hair fresh with its light and crisp fragrance, but it really didn’t do any type of oil control or texturizing. I liked spraying this on my roots on 2nd day hair; it didn’t leave a white cast on my hair, and it smells very fresh and clean.

Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Soft Waves Sea Salt Spray – Tropical Banana, 2 fl oz – Estimated Value $1.20 (Buy 8 fl oz for $4.79)

I love sea salt spray for added texture. My hair falls straight if I don’t use any products, but with a few spritzes of this product, I had more voluminous waves, and the best thing about this spray is it didn’t leave my hair clumped together or crunchy at all. It was easy to comb my fingers through my hair after it dried, and the fragrance is a day at the beach! Lovely!

Eva NYC Mane Magic 10-In-1 Primer, 1 fl oz – Estimated Value $2 (Buy 6 fl oz for $11.99)

I ended up really enjoying this hair primer! It is a dry oil that adds shine, reduces frizz, and provides heat protection; it detangled my hair making it a breeze to comb through, and I also really love its fragrance. I only needed two sprays to coat my hair, so this small sample will last me.

Verdict: Target Beauty Boxes have come such a long way since 2019. The products sampled were mostly all new to me, and I enjoyed seeing new brands in this month’s box. Target Beauty Box is such a great way to stock up on travel essentials, and I love seeing the different products and brands Target has to offer every month. The value of this box is $15; it is not one of their higher valued boxes, but all of the samples are very useful to me making it very worth the purchase.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you order today? No, unfortunately this box has sold out.

  1. I had heard the Hask hair masks are wonderful, so it’s interesting to read your experience. I have yet to try my Hask hair mask.

I wish they would come up with more convenient packaging. Wrestling with a foil pouch in the shower is difficult. I usually end up squeezing the mask into a small plastic container, and then using that for however many times the contents last.

I wish hair mask manufacturers would use a pouch with a screw top like the Acure overnight treatment in April 2020’s beauty box.

    • Hempz does that, and it’s so convenient. They’re really good too! I’ve always enjoyed Hask hair masks, but Hempz is my favorite drugstore brand for hair masks 🙂

    • I prefer the pouches actually, because they can be squeezed out completely flat. With any other type of container there is always some product remaining inside.

I just cut it open with scissors before I step into the shower. I keep a pair of hairdresser scissors in the bathroom, so it’s not difficult or out of my way.

      • When I know I’m down to my last use of a mask in a pouch with a cap I cut it prior to getting in the shower so I’m able to scoop out what’s left. I also use a q-tip to push out the last bits from inside the cap. It only takes a few extra seconds, so I don’t mind. 🙂

  2. Neither of the May Target Beauty Boxes is still available, FYI. I don’t think they made many of them this month.

    • Actually, I think they made tons of them but they sold out over and over again. The sunscreen box sold out in a few hours, they opened it up again later that day for a short period and sold out. Then a couple days later restocked it and it sold out again. The other box sold out but not as quickly as the sunscreen box, I saw it restocked again on their website and a few days later was sold out again.

  3. The box is adorable! Not cute enough to justify spending $7 on hair stuff I’m not a fan of though. Waiting to see what June brings..

  4. I had been kind of hating myself for missing out on this, but your review makes me not mind missing out so much. It sounds like the products weren’t all that special and, until you summed up the value, I hadn’t realized that there weren’t any full sized items in here and there are usually at least a couple.

    • Yeah, this isn’t a good deal, especially considering that some of these things I won’t use at all, including the rose water spray which seems to be the highest value item in here.
