Box of Style Summer 2020 Review

Henny + Lev Canvas Weekender - Retail Value $179.00

I used to have a similar weekender, but my mom loved it so much when I last visited home that I gifted it to her. I was kind of excited another was arriving in this box, but found it hard to guess the weight and overall quality just from the spoilers. I am happy to report that this bag is so well made and substantially more heavy duty than I expected. It is also huge! I also need to come clean about the fact that I am not generally a pleather fan and find most of the variations of faux leather to be laughable. You can still tell on this bag, but the PU trim feels downright hefty! The hardware is also great and as heavy as I would expect and want for a bag that is going to be tossed into my trunk, shoved under a seat on an airplane, or other traumatic travel situations that happen to luggage.

As with all of my canvas items, I plan on waxing this bag (my fave wax for this is Otter Wax!) to make sure it stays cleaner than raw canvas. The wax also makes cleaning up any dirt a lot easier and provides a little water resistance.

Panacea Beaded Tassel Earrings - Listed Value $55.00

I have to admit that I still really like tassels. They are boho without feeling too 'hippie' and are always fun to wear because they move so freely when worn. Do I already own a somewhat similar pair? Yeah, I do. In a pale blue. But I also wear them all the time! I don't have anything remotely similar in white so these will certainly get worn.

FYI: I have metal sensitive ears, and I found these didn't bother me at all until the end of the day when they became a little irritating. This is pretty much standard for my higher-quality costume earrings.

Peter Som Dream Floral-Print Sarong in Rose Quartz - Listed Value $195.00

Sarongs aren't my thing at all, but I can get on board with one that can double as a scarf. I also do like little coverups like this in the summer when I sleep in slips but still find myself a little chilly on the couch before bed. The pattern I received is an explosion of red flowers and petals on a pink background. The fabric is a poly/cotton blend that is both slightly sheer and very soft. There is also a light pink tassel trim to finish off the edge.

Ok, so the wind was blowing today, but this should give you a good idea of how large this thing is. It also looks a lot lighter when held up.

I like it much more as a pretty scarf.

Grown Alchemist Hydra-Repair Day Cream, 2.29 fl oz - Retail Value $49.00

This happens to be one of those skincare products that my husband will actually use, so I was thrilled to see a tube inside. I think the minimal packaging calls to his minimal nature? Will's skin is really good to begin with, but as a skincare addict, it makes me feel better that he is at least using some sort of daily moisturizer. For those of you who don't have to share, I bet you are going to love this cream. It has a very light floral scent (think orange flowers and tart geranium) and absorbs in a snap, leaving not a trace of greasy feeling behind. The inclusion of camellia and rosehip seed oil makes this really nourishing but not heavy. It is also free from artificial fragrances, parabens, paraffin, and synthetic colors.

Kosas Color & Light Palette in 'Tropic Equinox', 9 ml - Retail Value $34.00

Kosas is a brand I really like, and although I don't regularly use bronzers, I was willing to give this palette a chance. Both formulas are sheer creams that are as subtle or buildable as you like. The bronzer is actually really soft and has enough peach in it that I can easily use it as a blush if I choose. Just a few little pats on the apples of my cheeks and I have a nice healthy glow. The highlighter is an absolutely lovely creamy golden shimmer, but more in a champagne sort of way than a yellow. It looks great in the normal highlighter spots (I like my cheekbones and nose tip!) but also doubles as a very lovely lid glaze if you are into that sort of look.

Here I am wearing this duo! I have the bronzer on my cheeks and eyelids, and the highlighter on my cheekbones, nose, and forehead. I thought it applied best with my fingertips but found that if you like to wear powder, a fluffy brush made for a dreamy application that didn't mess with your powder finish.

Verdict: This was my very first Rachel Zoe Box of Style and I really enjoyed it. Some items fit my overall vibe more than others, but value-wise there was enough in here for me to appreciate it, especially if you choose to use a coupon. I think my favorite pieces were the weekender and the Kosas palette, but I also love the Grown Alchemy cream and the tassel earrings. The sarong might be the only sort-of miss for me, but I still think it will be worn, or gifted to my mom who would likely LOVE it.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

As a new subscriber, this was my first box. I was very happy with the bag, highlighter and blue sarong. I had issues with two of the products: the beaded earrings had an irregular yellow discoloration (glue showing through?) and the bronzer/highlighter smelled rancid to me. I sent an email to customer service and it was answered within a few days. They asked me to send a picture of the earrings and promptly put in an order to replace the two items. I had read stories of poor customer service, but wanted to share that I had an excellent experience with their customer service team.

I contemplated about this for 4 hrs. At $8.33 an item how can I refuse to buy this??? Well, I bought it! Haha! I now have a matching towel from a previous BOS.

Even with the 50$ off coupon I still don’t want this horrible box! Probably the worst one ever!! And I added the going value for each item as it appears on ebay(lowest buy it now price) and it only comes to 110$! Definitely lowest ebay priced valued box from RZ ever! Usually she has big star products that hold there value even on ebay but not this box. I don’t like any of it. To bad being only 50$ now and I couldn’t even make money off of it or gift it 👎👎

Tanya

Wow!! With the $50 off and the free gift (the towel), this made me buy it! I can’t wait to get it!!

Reply ButtonReply

AmyM

Right? I chose the towel, too. I’ve been wanting it for ages. At $50 + change, this is a steal.

Reply ButtonReply

Beth

Thumbs up! I got it for $65 with a free (huge) Missoni beach towel. The bag is sturdy, the blue sarong quite faded but a surprisingly pretty scarf, the Kosas a total hit for me ( I’m fairly pale, looks very glowy, light and moisturizing) love grown alchemist products, nourishing and perfect for a no/ low makeup summer! The only miss is the earrings. Those are heavy and huge! I think they would look great on someone with thick dark hair though. On thin haired me they just look crazy. Overall a hit.

Just received my box today – love it! I got the deal with 35% off + free gift – got the towel, which is super nice, but I’ve never paid that much for a towel! I absolutely love the Grown Alchemist moisturizer, so the box was almot paid for. Love the Kosas palette, wasn’t sure about the colors, but they look great. Whether I use the sarong as intended, or as a throw in my home, the blue colors are beautiful! The bag will be used eventually whenever we travel again. Earrings are a little too much for me, but I have the perfect person in mind to gift to.

All, in all – a great deal!

I was hoping for a good 4th deal on this box and here is is. I’m so glad to have freebie options- that fringe bag is so NOT ME! Can anyone tell me if that towel is as quality as it looks? I have a Vera Bradley beach towel I use as an after shower wrap when it’s too hot for a robe and would like an alternate. If you own this, would you call it luxe and large? I’m also a size 16 so I’m hoping it’s big. Thanks in advance for any response.

How do I get a response from customer service? My earrings arrived broken and the bag stinks! It’s been airing out for 6 days now and still smells like cat urine! Any ideas on how to get that smell out? I contacted their customer service by email and through their form and only received confirmation that they received my requests. I have a bad feeling…

Loved the BOS review, I’ve been waiting on a Summer 2020 unboxing!! And I cannot wait for mine- it will be here next week along with a few extras from the Marketplace. ( I’m a new member, what can I say?lol) question; Did it come in a Magnetized Box? Someone in the U.K. received a regular Black/white Box…hmm

Reply ButtonReply

May

Venus- I received my box today and was very disappointed that there was no magnetic box only a regular cardboard shipping box. Their blurb said it was for “green” reasons but I’ll bet it was just for cost cutting. I’ve enjoyed repurposing the magnetic boxes so that, in addition to the lower quality of the items this season is making me reconsider BOS.

I will vouch for the customer service complaints noted in the blog post. Unfortunately, despite the message from Box of Style last year, this continues to be a problem. I cancelled my account but continue to be charged months later and have only received curt responses from customer service and they refuse to even receive information I have confirming the mistake. Too bad because the box has some great stuff, but beware before ordering from this company.

Reply ButtonReply

Laura

I canceled this box almost nine months ago and out of nowhere a charge appeared on my credit card statement from them. I contacted them via email
customer service and have received responses that are rude and clearly indicate (1) they do not believe that I did not order this box, and (2) they are refusing to do anything to credit my credit card for a box I did not order, do not want, and have not received. I will be reporting the matter to my credit card company and contesting this charge. Not a reputable company and I would never purchase anything from them again for any reason.

when i had gotten my first box, the bag had glue residue and broken stitching. i sent 3 emails that went unanswered. forth email said cancel my sub, and only then did they respond. i said i do not want the next box until the bag issue has been resolved. they charged and sent the next box anyway. i had it refused, return to sender. i had proof USPS took possession of it and i did not have it. they fought me on the charge anyway and i had to contest this with my cc co, and gather the string of emails leading up to this. their excuse was its the holidays, and we were backed up. it took weeks between emails. THEY dragged it out and then said it was my fault for not cancelling before the deadline. luckily the email i sent saying i didn’t want the next box until the bag issue was resolved favored in my case.

from what i understand RZ sold this box business to a corporation, and its been downhill ever since, in both item quality/brands and customer service. AVOID RZ LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Kim

YOu should also consider reporting them to the BBB. Sorry this is happening!

Abby Holsinger

I love the canvas waxing idea! Also, the bronzer looks fantastic on your complexion.

Megan K.

Thanks Abby! It was a surprise win for me!

Hawk Tools makes a spectacular fabric wax that is applied quickly and lasts longer than Otterwax. Can your post be updated? Additionally, that canvas weekender is nothing but class. You have excellent taste.

Mary

I totally don’t get the blood look that some people are seeing on the sarong. I’m not necessarily loving the design, but it looks like flowers and paint splatter to me….almost like an inconsistent tie-dye.

Reply ButtonReply

Sara

Megan, I’d love to see that bag after you wax it. If you get to it soon, could you post a picture? Thanks

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

I will try to update when my new wax bar arrives! Generally, it does darken canvas a little, but not so much that it is jarring. And I find the dirt and water-resistance totally worth it!

Reply ButtonReply

KerryD

Hi Megan,
I love pink and I think the sarong is very pretty (despite the crime scene vibe)… but I wanted to know if you have any good pics of the blue one? Even the spoiler write up a few weeks back only showed the pink one. TY!

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Hey Kerry! We didn’t get the blue one, which is a little bit of a bummer because I think I liked that print better, at least for the vibes of my closet. Sorry I can’t help out with a better image of this one!

Reply ButtonReply

Liz

I think I’m in the minority camp regarding the bag. That’s the one thing in the box I’m actually hankering for (even tho my closet is definitely hiding some bags very similar to it already… I know, I have a problem). Great tip about the otter wax too. I can think of several things I own that could benefit from a good waxing.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

I really like the bag. It would have been perfect for the memorial day trip I am missing out on. Ah well. Next time. <3

Reply ButtonReply

The earrings and sarong/scarf look fantastic on you. The earrings are very elegant. That brand is in high-end stores. I have found the sarong really nice from the moment that I saw it. The only thing holding me back is the bag. It’s one of those things that I already have too many as it is, with leather or high-tech fabric.

Didn’t realize that you are the new MSA Team Author! I join many others in being so very happy for you! Mazel!

Reply ButtonReply

Also love the earrings on you!

Was just wondering how heavy they are? Looks like they could be heavy due to the bead-work? I love white earrings because they go with everything and are so fresh and classy. I just don’t tend to wear earrings if they are heavy. Thanks!

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Thnk you H! I wore the earrings all weekend. I am actually glad they arrived in white because they go with everything and don’t get lost in my hair. Thanks for the congrats! Nothing is changing in my job description, I just took over the boxes Liz used to write. Just trying to do her justice! <3

Amy

Entirely off topic, but you’re stunning!

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Thank you Amy! I took these selfies (which I always feel silly doing) in front of my window, which probably helped the overall look. Thank you for the kind compliment.

Reply ButtonReply

Debbie

Was coming to comment the same! I only wish my skin looked that good. Absolutely radiant and beautiful

Reply ButtonReply

Joy

That sarong. My FIRST thought was that it was either a period accident gone very badly, or that it had been used as a tourniquet! Really, though, I just wanted to say that Megan, your hair is speaking to me. I love all your tinsel!

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

I love that you called it tinsel! I have never heard that but will be using from now on. It seems much more festive than premature grey. Haha! Love!

I have never tried box of style but several past boxes looked juicy. I want that missoni towel SO bad but I’m not willing to pay $75 for it. I would if there were other things in this summer box I wanted, but nothing thrills me.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

I will forever wish I had one or 15 of those towels.

Reply ButtonReply

Coco

I’m not generally a fan of tassels (looking at you Popsugar!), but I think those earrings look very pretty on you, as does the sarong-as-a -scarf.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Thank you Coco <3

Reply ButtonReply

Amy in KC

I think the sarong is beautiful! What does that say about me? LOL

Great review, Megan, and I agree with the comments about your GORGEOUS hair!

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Thanks Amy! i think it is either a love it or not sort of print. I certainly like it, but the details are easier to see in person for sure.

So much hair love! Thank you!

ThaRandl

First-awesome review!
Second-I’m so happy I’m not the only one who sees a bloody mess with that sarong. Good lord, how did the makers *not* notice this?!?
Third—I’m just learning that Megan took over! Congratulations
Finally—hope everyone is safe and happy❤️

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Hi! I feel like that print is certainly polarizing.. I will say it is better looking wrapped around th neck because it looks more pink than white.
As a side note, no new change for me in my role at MSA. Just taking on some boxes from Liz, no other new responsibilities for me. 🙂

And we are all doing well! I hope the same for you. <3

Reply ButtonReply

Mimosa

Hi Megan,
Thank you for the review. But I’m really writing to congratulate you in taking over the reins of MSA! Fantastic! You will do a terrific job!

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Hey Mimosa! I appreciate the love, but my role hasn’t changed here at MSA. I just got lucky to take over some of the coolest boxes from Liz for now. I do appreciate the confidence you have in me either way though, haha! 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Mimosa

Hi Megan,
Ooh, ok. My misunderstanding, sorry. (But you *would* do a terrific job).
So instead, let me say, nice one with getting BOS to review. Except for the blood sarong. Better luck with next season’s edition. X

I just cannot buy into this weekender for $179. Maybe for $45. I bought one off of Itsy, all buttery quality leather With beautiful brass hardware for a bit less then this. Same size and handmade from Scotland.

Off topic, but I would love to see a link to the bag you picked and from which Etsy shop?? I’m expecting my first child late next month and want a cool bag to be packed + prepared with all our necessities (and then some) BC once we are in the hospital, we can’t leave the floor until DC! Thank you in advance!
