SlutBox Review - January 2020

Slutbox
2.2 overall rating
33 Ratings | 3 Reviews

SlutBox by Amber Rose is a lifestyle and beauty subscription geared towards sex-positive people (often containing lube, condoms, pasties, and other sex-forward items). It's $29.99 a month and tends to be a little controversial because of its name as well as some of the items included. They've just gotten a box update, so "SLUTBOX" is no longer on the front of the box- it's now inside.

NSFW – this post may not be safe to read at work due to the name.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

SlutBox by Amber Rose January 2020 Review

SlutBox is still running behind on deliveries and we received this box on March 4th. As of now, we're still waiting for February, they are skipping March altogether (no one will be charged), and they are supposed to come back fresh and new for April.

The theme for January is "Glo Up" and features a gang of beauty products that mostly are not detailed in the info card. Similar to last month, they are doing a sort of grab-bag style and subscribers will receive variations.

Millenial Beauté CBD Facewash - Buy a full size for $45.00 (on sale for $24.99)

The first item is the only one specifically called out on the info card. We've seen Millenial Beauté here before and this is apparently a new product from them. You can't swing a cat without hitting a CBD product these days so it's not surprising to find one here since I've gotten CBD gummies from SlutBox in the past. I've used this wash a couple of times and just plain am not into it. It has a really off-putting scent that smells sort of like a hospital to me and it feels pretty drying after use. There's no size on the bottle so I'm not sure how much this is worth, but $45.00 for the full size seems steep to me.

Yes To Coconut Frothe Mousse Mask, 2 oz. - Retail Value $15.99

This brand is widely available at drugstores and places like Target, so it's interesting to see it here. I've never tried any Yes To products and although I know they recently recalled a unicorn sheet mask of theirs, I still felt okay to try this mousse mask from them. Squeezing the pale yellow mask from the pouch was fun and it really is like spreading frosting on my face. It has a faint coconut/coffee smell similar to a latte of sorts but with a synthetic aspect. It has a slightly chalky feel to it and after 10 minutes, I removed it. I did find this mask to by moisturizing but overall I think there are masks I prefer to this one in scent and experience.

Le Mini Macaron Hand Mask - Retail Value $5.00 (on sale for $3.50)

Since removing my acrylic nails a few months ago, I've been paying special attention to nursing my nails and cuticles back to health. Hand masks like this one are a great way for me to deeply moisturize and give them special treatment. Inside the package are two plastic single-use gloves filled with moisturizer. I simply put them on for 15 minutes to let it penetrate, and once removed, my hands were incredibly soft and I saw a big difference in my delicate cuticles.

Oh K! Glowing Skin Gold Dust Hydrogel Mask - Retail Value $8.00

Hydrogel masks are my favorite! I also happen to love this K-Beauty brand (Oh K!) and already use a cleansing stick of theirs. This mask comes in two separate pieces (top and bottom) which makes it easier to fit my small face. Each piece has two backings so that the hydrogel mask is safely sandwiched in between. Once I peel off both sides, I can place it on my face and relax for 10-15 min. It smells sort of botanical and soothing probably due to its green tea ingredient along with gold powder and vitamin B3. After using, my skin felt super soft and I overall loved the luxurious feel!

Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream, 0.1 oz - Retail Value $1.60 (Buy a 1 oz. tube for $16.00)

This intensive moisture cream is a classic and really great on ultra-dry skin! It has a medicated scent to it which I secretly love (like Vicks vapo-rub) and although it's slightly greasy, it really helps chapped skin. This tiny tube is a free sample size but I'll be tossing it into my purse for extra care for my hands after washing so much lately.

Niu Body Piña Colada Sugar Lip Polish -Buy a full-size 15 g for $10.00

Seeing this lip scrub from Niu Body is like seeing an old friend. I got a full-size version of this back in November 2017 from a different box and was a big fan then. This petite jar is perfect for travel even though I'm not sure if it's 5 or 10 g (it says both: one on the lid, one on the bottom). This scrub is nice and wet so that it doesn't crumble as much as some, but its not too liquidy either which makes for a nice texture. After a good scrub, the oil left behind on my lips is very hydrating. If you like piña coladas or getting caught in the rain, I think you'll enjoy this lip scrub as much as I do.

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bod Buff, 15 mL - Estimated Value $2.34 (Buy a full-size 160 mL for $25.00)

Wow- really surprised to see such a popular and big brand like this in SlutBox. Although this tube is quite small, it's filled with Sol de Janeiro's body scrub. The key ingredients here are Brazilian quartz crystal, tropical volcanic pumice, rice grain, and Amazon river kaolin clay. It has the same delicious smell as their popular Bum Bum Cream which I am lowkey obsessed with. However, I didn't find this scrub to be all that... scrubby. It was still nice but didn't get the job done like a salt scrub would.

Verdict: SlutBox is getting really weird. It has become a straight-up beauty box with zero slut factor and pretty much no cohesive theme whatsoever. The brands included this time were more familiar than ever, but still gave me vibes of just being promotional items that were provided for free. I honestly do like about half of what came here but it's just feeling like a random shelf from the beauty section of Marshall's which I'd rather choose myself for $29.99. Some of the items I wasn't able to calculate prices for, but it's kind of in the eye of the beholder at this point. I liked the sheet mask, hand mask, and lip scrub, but the rest was a big MEH.

And I thought that the cleanser was a nice big bottle of lube, and therefore something “slutty”! Considering the contents of this particular box, I must be quite morally-challenged; my ungodly lust for skincare maketh me a sexual predator indeed. I’m going to pull out my “A” sweater right now and go trolling the supermarket for unwitting peni (plural penis, not the nasty gang).

This box is a mess.

That pineapple lip scrub was in Ipsy’s “add on pop up” today if anyone wants to grab it!

Beth

Didn’t they make an announcement a few months back that they were suddenly going to be all about astrology? And then suddenly MASKS, ALL THE MASKS.

I love this box so much…from afar.

Where was our big orange bucket hat this month come on Amber!

“with zero slut factor” 🤣🤣

There’s just so much they could do with this box for the price. It’s sad they are so far from it.

Totally agree this appears to be a beauty box. Almost as though someone, somewhere got all the pasties and sticky lip gloss this month.

I would have loved to have gotten this box b

I bought that Yes To on clearance at Ulta for $3. This box is definitely getting weird!

Are they just buying huge lots of stuff on Amazon to throw in this box??

I love Amber Rose and her realness. She is a Philly girl like me. But this box…come on. What is this? It has the value of an Ipsy bag and its $30? I feel bad for anyone who paid for this box.

I’m surprised this box is still around.

It seems to be competing with the Oreo box for the worst sub box award.

I cannot imagine who is still subscribing to this box. Every time I read a review I just have to wonder – who or what is their target demographic? These aren’t bad items by any means, but they definitely don’t suit the “Slutbox” lifestyle.

Tammy

How slutty.

Lol.

I honestly have no idea why this box exists. Btw that yes to mask (along with others by the brand) are available at dollar tree.

Amy

Yep!
I like a lot of the Yes To … brand, especially their makeup remover wipes.

But I like them because they’re decent and CHEAP especially when at TJ Maxx or on sale!

Not something I would expect to see in a sub box, except maybe a full size in a standard Ipsy bag.
