Earthlove Summer 2019 Review
The theme for the summer box is “The Sea Calls to Me.” This lovely booklet was included with information about the theme and the season. The featured nonprofit this month is the Coral Reef Alliance which helps to protect coral reef systems, an important part of the sea!
This card was also included which lists and details the items included in this package.
The Animal Lover’s Guide to Changing the World by Stephanie Feldstein – Retail Value $16.99 (found here for $9.60)
I LOVE this book. I am an animal lover, although perhaps not as much as some, but I definitely have both a personal and philosophical interest in animals. Like many issues, the dangers facing wildlife and domesticated animals can seem overwhelming. I mean, I really can’t adopt any more pets! What I love most about this book is that it gives you simple, concrete, and in most cases, small things that you can do to help the welfare of animals. Those little actions add up! They can especially add up if everyone embraces these small changes. I know some hardcore animal activists would probably not enjoy this book, but hopefully everyone can agree that getting the average person to take on some of these helpful actions would be a huge win. From Amazon:
“This book belongs on every animal lover’s shelf—and it’s a particularly great gift for young people who are on fire to save animals but are unsure where to start. Hooray!!” —Sy Montgomery, author of The Good Good Pig and The Soul of an Octopus
The Animal Lover’s Guide to Changing the World is the inspiring, accessible, and empowering book for everyone who loves animals and wants to live a more animal-friendly life, even if they aren’t ready to join a movement or give up bacon.
With more than 7.5 billion people on the planet, wildlife is going extinct at the fastest rate since the dinosaurs. Three to four million dogs and cats are killed in shelters every year; billions of chickens, pigs, and cows are killed for food; and countless animals are killed in research labs or their habitat. The numbers are daunting, but there’s good news too! Even one person truly can make a difference without breaking the bank.
With Stephanie Feldstein’s straightforward and encouraging guidance, readers will learn how to take action to create a better world for the animals we love. It starts with changes as simple as taking a shorter shower, skipping meat once a week, wearing “this” not “that,” and extends all the way to online activism and politics.
The animals need us; so let’s get on with some world changing!
Whale Beach Tote by Gallant – Listed Value $35
What a cute tote bag! I know we tend to get lots of tote bags in subscription boxes, but I personally never seem to have enough. This one is extra special because it is made from 100% organic cotton and has been fairly traded. That might account for the listed value, which seems a little high. I could not find it for sale anywhere online, though, so I’m not sure. It’s a design exclusive to Earthlove! I took this tote to the pool the other day, and it is just the right size for the essentials!
Moisturize Solid Shampoo Bar by HiBar – Retail Value $13.95
This solid shampoo has quite a pedigree! It’s vegan and free of cruelty, parabens, plastics, sulfates, phthalates, silicone, and palm oil, and the packaging is plastic-free also. But how does it perform? Pretty well, actually! It lathers well and has a nice scent. It is a little heavy for my hair, which is fine in parts, but otherwise it is great and would probably work really well in the drier months of winter that we have here in the Southeast.
Organic Mint Tea Soda by Teatulia – Estimated Value $2.50 (Buy 12 cans for $30)
This is a delicious little soda, but it’s so much more than that. Teatulia grows the leaves for its 100% organic teas in Bangladesh, where their operation has lifted a community out of poverty. That’s amazing! They operate a tea bar in Denver, and this is one of their most popular tea sodas. I can see why! Yummy!
Oatmeal Cacao Chip Clean Cookie Bites by Sun & Swell – Estimated Value $3.33 (Buy 6 packs for $20)
And speaking of yum, these cookies are so good! They amazingly have only five ingredients: dates, cashews, oats, cacao, and cinnamon – all 100% organic. They are also vegan and gluten, GMO, dairy-free, and the packaging is even compostable. For a sweet treat, these are about as wholesome as you can get!
Glow Juice Refining Enzyme Mask by Earth Harbor, 2 oz – Full Size! Retail Value $40
What a pretty mask! Glow Juice is an exfoliating mask made from fruit enzyme AHAs, red seaweed, aloe leaf, white willow bark BHAs, and rice powder. I tried it, and as I have said before, it is hard to really tell how well a mask works after just one use, but I like this one. The gelatinous texture has a cooling sensation on the skin, which is always welcome in summer! It left my skin feeling clean and smooth.
SPF 50+ Water Resistant Zinc Sunscreen Butter by All Good, 1 oz – Full Size! Retail Value $9.99
It works! I wore this to the pool the other day on the areas of my face and body that typically get sunburned, and absolutely no sun penetrated this sunblock. It is made of 100% organic, all-natural ingredients, and it did not irritate my normally very sensitive skin. It came with this leaflet also that explains how so many sunscreens wind up damaging the coral reef, but this sunscreen is reef-friendly. That’s great news!
Summer Solstice Solar Eclipse Single Eye Shadow by Aether Beauty – Retail Value $16 (currently sold out)
What a pretty eyeshadow! It’s a shimmery peach color, made from vegan ingredients including shea butter and coconut oil. It’s moisturizing! It is also a beauty industry first as it is housed in a fully recyclable metal tin and has zero waste paper packaging. Impressive!
Lemongrass Wearable Aromatherapy by Warm Human – Retail Value $14.95
This little balm is a wearable perfume infused with the uplifting scent of lemongrass. It smells fantastic! Lemongrass is especially good for combatting depression, and it has the added benefit of repelling insects.
Waves of Change Ring by Earthlove – Listed Value $15
This is a really cute adjustable ring that is bursting with a summer ocean vibe! I like it a lot. I am a little confused though, because it is listed as an exclusive, but I received the exact same ring in a recent package from Fair Trade Friday. Maybe they are just similar?
The Verdict: This was a really fun package from Earthlove! I felt like almost everything really fit the ocean theme and had an awesome summer vibe! To me, the best thing about Earthlove is that it introduces me to products and brands that work within my same values of compassion and kindness to our planet and the creatures on it. My favorites this month were the tote bag and the book! It also has a pretty amazing value of $167.71 for a $59.95 box!!!
