Bluum Box May 2019 Review

This Bluum box was sent for my son, Parker, who is 3 years old. Just an FYI - our box arrived very late this month and they did send an email letting us know along with a note about how they had low stock on their signature red cartons which is why our items arrived in a plain brown box this month!

Counting Collection: Counting Dinosaurs by Roger Priddy - Retail Value $8.99 (found here for $7.98 )

This book is perfect for Parker the dinosaur lover! While I thought this would be more of a traditional counting book, each page actually asks you to find five different items on the pages and a different number of each item. This is great because it reinforces counting to five on each page. The pages are full of illustrations of dinosaurs doing fun activities and they are all different colors so you can reinforce our colors as well!

Green Toys Race Car – Retail Value $9.99 (found here for $6.52)

This car is a fun and very simple toy. It is just a medium-sized car that they can push around. It doesn't move on its own or anything, but I think sometimes those are the best toys! The seat is open so they can give their smaller toys a ride if they want to and my kids have enjoyed playing with it. As with most of Green Toys products, this car is made from 100% recycled milk jugs and contains no BPA, phthalates, or PVC. I think the best thing about this toy is the size - it is just big enough for little hands but still small enough to travel with!

Mudpuppy The Very Hungry Caterpillar 12 Piece Puzzle - Retail Value $10.99

This puzzle is from Mudpuppy, but it doesn't look like they sell this one any longer so the retail value is a bit higher than what it originally sold for since it is a rare item now. We actually already own this puzzle, but it is a favorite of ours so I think that it will be a great one to donate! This puzzle features the beloved caterpillar from Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar and all of the pieces fit neatly inside this little zipper bag so you can take it with you for some entertainment on-the-go. The pieces are nice and large and even though there are only 12 total, it can still occupy the kids for a few minutes as they put it together!

Melissa and Dough Chunky Shape Puzzle - Retail Value $9.99

There was a little confusion this month on what the fourth item I would be receiving would be. I received two separate emails with one listing a farm playset and the second showing a swaddle blanket, and instead of either of those, we received this shape puzzle. The swaddle would have been a strange item for a three-year-old, but this puzzle also feels a bit too young for him, although technically it is recommended for ages 2-4. It will be a good puzzle for color and shape reinforcement for Parker, but my one-year-old is the one who seems to have taken a liking to this one and the big chunky pieces are perfect for his little fingers. Since they don't fit down flush with the board the pieces are easy for him to grasp and place and the quality of these big wooden pieces is great.

Verdict: This was a pretty decent Bluum box this month all things considered. My son loves the book and the car and I'm more than happy to donate the extra caterpillar puzzle. The only item that felt out of place was that chunky puzzle, but I think that's because we already received a more advanced puzzle in our box and because there was so much confusion over what our fourth item would be. It is still a nice quality puzzle and my youngest son has been enjoying it, so I can't count it as a total loss. Hopefully, they will get their shipping and emails sorted out soon, although this seems to have put them a bit behind for June as well! The total retail value of the items we received this month came to $39.96 which isn't bad for a $34 (plus free shipping) box, but I am hoping our next box brings either a better value or a more exciting curation.

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? All orders are processed the first of every month and shipped out on the 9th. If you order today, you will start receiving a box for next month.

Value Breakdown: At $34 for this box, here is what you are paying approximately for each item:

  • Car: $8.50
  • Caterpillar Puzzle: $9.35
  • Shape Puzzle: $8.50

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
