BarkBox Super Chewer Box Review + Coupon – May 2018

closed Barkbox Super Chewer box

BarkBox is the most popular dog subscription box. They now offer a Super Chewer Box version for dogs who are destructive. If you have read any of my dog subscription reviews, you will know that my Rottweiler, Nyx, is an expert at finding the weak points in toys and tearing them apart, so this seemed perfect for her. (For reference, Nyx weighs about 87 pounds right now.)

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

This review is of the Large Super Chewer, $39 a month, box.

BarkBox Super Chewer May 2018 “Age of the Furaoh” Review

BarkBox custom produces most of their treats and toys, so everything always nicely revolves around a theme:

The information card varies month-to-month in terms of style but I definitely appreciate the creativity that goes into it.

This month, there was a safety card about toy types and supervising your dog. Nyx is still working on the whole “toys are not for eating” thing.

Blissful Biscuit PB & Bacon Sandwiches (4.5 oz)

Lately, the treats we have been getting in the BarkBox Super Chewer Box aren’t in the Barkbox shop, and since they’re exclusive to the subscription, I’m never sure how to value them. (Things like type of protein can drastically change the price of pet food and treats.) Anyway, these are made in the USA and are free of wheat, corn, and soy (most Barkbox treats are free of these ingredients). PB & B sounds kind of gross to me but then again I am not a dog…

The Treat Pyramid by Barkbox (4 oz)

Here is another one that’s not in the Barkbox shop. As with the other treats, these are free of wheat, corn, and soy, and are made in the USA. The protein sources here are also easy to identify: lamb, pork, and chicken. I do appreciate the honesty in actually showing the chicken on the front. Many, many dog treats (I have been reading the labels for a long time) list a rare protein like lamb and then when you drill down, you find that they have lots of chicken and only a little lamb. I’d rather companies be up front like this.

Mighty Mummy Ball

The Barkbox Super Chewer Box usually has one hard rubber toy, but this is a little different. It is still rubber, but a softer rubber, and it has a squeaker inside, which Nyx dearly loved. I think my ears are still ringing, though.

Scared Stiff Scarab

Lately, we have been getting these combo rubber or nylon and rope toys and Nyx is loving it. You can see some pictures of Nyx playing with this below. The rope moves through the nylon part and it is hilarious to watch Nyx trying to pull the rope off – she can’t, but she sure tries hard.

Plato Pet Treats Thinkers in Salmon (2 count) – Buy 10 oz for $15.99

You’ll usually get one or two chews like this in the BarkBox Super Chewer Box. (You’ll see all sorts of things, from bully sticks to Etta Says elk chews.) The first ingredient here really is salmon, and these are free of wheat, corn, and soy, although they do have some brown rice so they are not 100% grain free. Although the Barkbox shop doesn’t have these, Petco seems to, so I have linked there in the item title.

Butcher’s Block Bones 6” Krunchie Tube – Retail Value $3

Back before Nyx got IBD, I used to give these to her every now and then. She thought they were awesome. It is best to be prepared to let your dog finish it off in one sitting (especially if he or she is a destructive chewer) because these are super gross to touch when they are all wet – if your dog will let you have it back. (This is a beef trachea in case you didn’t already know.) Because this is cartilage, it is high in glucosamine and chondroitin, which can help with your dog’s joint health.

Here are some pictures of Nyx with the scarab toy. (That is Mr. Kitty flattening himself into the couch. It’s his new favorite hangout spot.)

Verdict: I couldn’t calculate a value for this month’s BarkBox Super Chewer Box since none of the main treats or toys were available in the BarkBox shop. But there are still some conclusions that can be drawn (these are basically the same as last month): (1) The contents of this box are pretty representative of what you would get if you were to sign up in a given month (two different types of toys, two treats, two chews); (2) Most items are custom-made for BarkBox; (3) The toys have, so far, been pretty durable. Also, the Egypt theme was another fun one. Barkbox is doing great with the themes lately.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would be June’s.

Coupon – Use code SUBADDICTION to get a free month added with the purchase of a 6 or 12-month subscription plan!

Value Breakdown: At $39 for the box, you are paying about $6.50 per item. Although some of the chew prices are below that, the toy prices are almost certainly well above that. (When I can calculate values, I usually get $50-55+ for this subscription.)

  1. I got some of those Plato treats as part of the Petco foundation calendar and read that they were tested to have a high lead content in the salmon. My dog doesn’t like the other flavors I got her either.

  2. Thanks for the review! I subscribe to the regular BarkBox with the plush toys that our pooch loves to destroy and wonder if the super chewer would be a good choice. While I think my pup will prefer the softer side of the subscription it’s nice to see the review of the toys so I know how to add the extra, more durable toys into the mix. I’m sure either of these would be a hit for her–especially the squeaky one! Nyx is so handsome! (And I love your kitty reviews, too!). Thank you, Ragan!

  3. Does NYX make noises when she’s playing? I think it’d be cute if you could do a short video of her playing with one of the toys. (from any of the boxes she gets)

    • She is actually pretty quiet, usually the only thing you hear is whatever noise the toy makes. I don’t have a way of making videos right now (I don’t have a smartphone) but maybe at some point in the future I can figure that out.
