Target Define & Shine box closed

Every month, Target launches a beauty box, and it usually sells out very quickly. This month they released multiple boxes, including Define & Shine - a curly-hair focused one! (This box is sold out online, but check your zip code to fine boxes at a store near you!)

If you want to make sure you don’t miss out on the next Target Beauty Box, make sure to sign up for the My Subscription Addiction daily newsletter!

Define & Shine Target Beauty Box March 2018 Review

This box comes with an info card and Target coupons for a few of the included brands:

front of the lime green Target Define & Shine info card

back of the Target Define & Shine info card

two target store coupons

Now, on to the items!

Mielle Organic Detangling Co-Wash, 1 oz

Mielle Organic Detangling Co-Wash, 1 oz - Estimated Value $1.50 (Buy the full-size version for $11.99)

I have never used a co-wash before, so I was interested to see how it went. This is supposed to be used between shampoos to keep your hair clean without stripping any natural oils. I used this with the Mielle deep conditioner, and my hair felt awesome afterwords— soft, smooth, and hydrated. The only downside is that I couldn't squeeze the container this co-wash came in, so I ended up using my teeth to get the product out. Hopefully, that isn't true for the full-size version.

Mielle Organix Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner, 1 oz

Mielle Organix Babassu Oil Mint Deep Conditioner, 1 oz - Estimated Value $1.75 (Buy the full-size version for $13.99)

The mint in this deep conditioner made using it a really luxurious experience. I love the refreshing scent and the slight tingle it gives my scalp, and this hydrated my curls really well. I didn't leave this in for the full fifteen minutes as directed, but once I rinsed this out it was easy to comb through my hair and deal with the tangles.

Jane Carter Curls To Go Un-Tangle Me, 2oz. - Estimated Value $2.75 (Buy the full-size version for $10.99)

After using the Mielle products I finished my distributing this through my damp hair and finger-combing it through. I then threw my hair up in a pineapple on the top of my head to let it dry, and when I took out the hair elastic my hair was beautifully curly without being tangled (my hair will literally start to tangle as soon as I finish combing it through), and my curls were soft and defined without being crunchy. You can see how great my curls looked in the selfie at the bottom of the Bare Minerals Mystery Box review. I am considering buying the full-size version of this, so luckily this is one of the products that came with a coupon!

Camille Rose Naturals Aloe Whipped Butter Gel, 2 oz

Camille Rose Naturals Aloe Whipped Butter Gel, 2 oz - Estimated Value $3.77 (Buy the full-size version for $15.09)

This butter gel had a high viscosity compared to the curl products I usually use, but it was still relatively easy to distribute through my curls. Even though it is a gel it didn't leave my curls crunchy or hard, and my curls lasted the entire day without falling out (sometimes the weight of my hair will cause my curls to lose some curl if that makes sense).

Camille Rose Naturals Almond Jai Twisting Butter, 2 oz

Camille Rose Naturals Almond Jai Twisting Butter, 2 oz - Estimated Value $4.25 (Buy the full-size version for $16.99)

This twisting butter is very thick, and to apply it I took a small amount and rubbed it between my hands before running my hands through my hair. This is for curls a bit tighter than mine because it is specifically designed for twist outs and Bantu knots, however, it still left my curls soft and defined.

TGIN Honey Hair Mask, 2 oz

TGIN Honey Hair Mask, 2 oz - Estimated Value $2.50 (Buy the full-size version for $14.99)

This smelled like starburst and it was not unpleasant. However, to get the full effect you need to wear this mask in damp hair for 15 minutes with heat or 35-60 minutes without heat. I am not a fan of hair masks that necessitate getting in the shower twice in order to be successful using it,  however, I was able to comb through my hair after waiting the requisite time with more ease than usual. It took a few swipes of the comb to get the slip to go smoothly, but after that combing all of my hair was a breeze.

Verdict: I was so excited to see an affordable beauty box specifically for curly hair. Good curly hair products can get expensive fast, so I was happy to get good sized samples to try with my curls. A few of these products are ones I am going to seriously consider adding to my haircare routine— luckily a few coupons came in this box too!

The Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today: Currently, it is out of stock online. However, you can check the stock of the stores near you to see if it is available (it is currently available at one of the Baton Rouge Target locations).

Make sure to sign up for the My Subscription Addiction daily newsletter so you don't miss the next one!

Value Breakdown: I calculated a value of $16.52, which is more than double the cost. This box costs $7, meaning that you're paying approximately the following for each item:

  • Mielle Cowash: $0.64
  • Mielle Deep Conditioner: $0.74
  • Jane Carter Curls to Go: $1.17
  • Camille Rose Butter Gel: $1.60
  • Camille Rose Twisting Butter: $1.80
  • TGIN Honey hair mask: $1.06

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

This would’ve been great to try out on my curls! Sad I missed it 😞

When I checked it says it’s in stock. But says it’s restricted in my area so I can’t order it. \o/

My box came looking pristine, but under the shrink wrap, once opened, was a goopy mess. One product had the lid off, one was half off and leaking, one other was very loose. Nothing sealed. Whoever packed my box must of been in a mean mood. Coupons soaked and slime everywhere 🙁

Sara

Same with mine! Lids not tightened on any of them, product everywhere. Smelled good, though. I had to clean up all the containers. At least I liked them.

JoAnn

Me too! All the lids were loose, and there was some product (can’t tell which one) that leaked out. Very disappointing.

Luna

I think I came super close to suffering your fate. When I opened my box, one of the tub samples had the lid so loose that if it had time to turn even 1/16th more of an inch it would have come off and my box too would have been a goopy mess. Plus, a little bit of the Mielle Organics co-wash seeped out, but I think it was mostly contained to just the bottle feeling a bit slimy.

I noticed your curls were super shiny and looking great in that pic!

Thank you, MinnePuffin!

I’ve tried pineappling (new word?) several times and it doesn’t work for me. Not sure if I’m doing it wrong or if it’s not for fine wavy / curlyish hair like mine??

JuJu

I watched the video – that will maybe work on tight small curls, it would never work on my part wavy part curly hair. 🙁

Normally I need to at least wet my hair to style it again.

JuJu

You used your teeth to get the product out? How does that work? 😄

Jessica Hapak

I bit the tube! Thats why I hope the full sized version isn’t like that– I don’t think I’ll be able to fit the bottle in my mouth. 😆

Luna

The Mielle Organics co-wash is my favorite co-wash out of all of the ones I’ve tried, so I have experience going through a full-sized bottle of it, and I’m happy to say that you won’t need to do any crazy finagling to get the product out. 🙂 Okay, maybe standing it upside down once you start to get to the bottom of it, but that’s it, I swear! 😉

Also, I only got a coupon for the Jane Carter Solutions brand, which my Target doesn’t sell. 🙁 I would have loved to have gotten a Mielle Organics coupon!

This was the first of the new boxes I found in store. I am LOVING what the products are doing to my curls!! They’ve never looked so good, nor been so manageable. I will be buying several of these products full sized!!!

I have tried twice and no luck. Had them in my cart online, as I hit submit, disappeared..bummed. I never see the boxes in stores where I am and no stores within 200 miles sell them. I do enjoy reading the reviews though. I know what products to try or avoid Thanks to everyone.

There still on sale on line. It shows me in my Target app.

Target strung me along for over a week and then cancelled the order, after the 2nd shipment sold out. I’m not bitter or anything since this is a box that suits my curly hair perfectly. >:(

Ashlea,

Keep checking back because I was able to order one for my mom this past Saturday.

I would have loved to pick up this box. Unfortunately, the target near me did not carry it despite having many of all the other boxes in stock and on display.

I loved this box! I used the TGIN honey hair mask similar to a regular conditioner and it still helped hydrate my curls! I didn’t know about the pineapple hair trick for curly haired girls, thanks for the tip!

JoAnne

Cantu Shea butter coconut curling cream is the best thing ever for curly hair , it doesn’t weigh the hair down even vitalized my curls the next day with another dab or so .. I’ve been looking for years and finally found the perfect product . WalMart sells 12 oz for less than 6 bucks. I got this box and I”ve used a few of the products and didn’t do much ,. smells good , one smells and looks like frosting…

Pineapple hair trick? Please tell me what it is?

Reply ButtonReply

Luna

A link for the hair trick was provided under the review of the Jane Carter Solution product. 🙂

My curly haired daughter has been doing the pineapple trick for a couple of years now. Helps her so much! I ordered her this box and it just arrived today. She’ll be thrilled to get it!

Girl, the pineapple revolutionized the way I do my hair. I leave it in a loose bun while I sleep and my curls are perfect the next day. Glad to share the knowledge!
