Sephora Favorites Selfie Kit January 2018 Review

This kit contains a mix of cult favorite products designed to help you achieve your best selfie. I’m a millennial, so this is right up my alley. Let’s see what kind of selfie we can achieve with this! All of the swatches will be at the bottom of the post.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Ashton

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Ashton,

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Ashton, .08 oz. - Estimated Value $14.55 (Buy the full-sized 0.11 oz. version for $20)

Anastasia Beverly Hills is a brand with a cult following, and their liquid lipstick is one of their highly touted products. I normally reach for Kat Von D when reaching for a liquid lipstick, so I was excited to try out this one. I was pleasantly surprised with the comfort and wear on this, and now I want to try out other lip colors from this brand! Ashton is described a mid-tone yellow-brown, which doesn’t really sound like it would be a pretty color, but I think it actually wore well with my coloring! It’s a darker brown than what I reached for, but a lot of the products in this box pushed me out of my comfort zone— and I am happy with it!

BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector® Pressed Highlighter in Opal

BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector® Pressed Highlighter in Opal

BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector® Pressed Highlighter in Opal, .08 oz. - Retail Value $19 (Buy the deluxe size version here and the full-sized version for $38)

At first, I thought this was the same shade that was included in the December 2017 Allure Beauty Box, but this shade is actually different. They definitely look the same, and while I love me some highlighter I cannot really tell the difference between champagne pop and opal. That being said, this is a good highlighter that blends easily, and you can build it up depending on the intensity you want. I actually enjoy using these pressed highlighters from BECCA as eyeshadows because I really feel like it makes my eyes pop.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara in Noir

Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara in Noir

Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara in Noir, .17 oz. - Estimated Value $13.81 (Buy the full-sized 0.32 oz. version for $26)

This was an automatic winner for me because I own this mascara in its full-sized version and I reach for it daily. I am blessed with naturally long lashes, so I want my mascara to help with volume and curl. This definitely fits the bill for that!

Marc Jacobs Beauty Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara in Noir

The brush reminds me a lot of the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara, but there is something different that makes the Marc Jacobs mascara work better for my lashes compared to other brands.  This was also included in all November Sephora Play! boxes, so I know a lot of MSA readers probably have it lying around. I definitely recommend giving it a try if you have it!

MILK MAKEUP Blur Stick,

MILK MAKEUP Blur Stick,

MILK MAKEUP Blur Stick, .2 oz. - Retail Value $14 (Buy the deluxe size version here and the full sized version for $36)

This is described as a colorless, matte, universal face filter. To be honest, I should have checked the description on the website before trying to swatch this— nothing would show up! Duh, Jessica, you're doing it wrong. That being said, I didn't really notice my pores being blurred, but I don't really have big pores. I did like how my powder foundation wore on my skin using this primer, and I look forward to trying this primer under my liquid foundation.

STELLAR* COSMIC FACE POWDER in GLOW 02

STELLAR* COSMIC FACE POWDER in GLOW 02 ingredients

STELLAR* COSMIC FACE POWDER in GLOW 02, .14 oz. - Estimated Value $15 (Buy the full-sized 0.28 oz. version for $30)

Y’all, chalk this up again as a product I was trying to use wrong. With a shade like glow 02, I thought it would be a highlighter. Lol, nope, not even close. This is a setting powder with a slight golden translucent finish. It claims to help even skin by working with your skin's undertones. I have a lot of naturally red undertones in my skin, so I did not expect a miracle.

Spoiler alert: there was no miracle. I may pass this off to a friend who has more naturally even colored skin, who I think this product is best suited for.

tarte Tarteist™ Double Take Eyeliner in Black

tarte Tarteist™ Double Take Eyeliner in Black, Full sized! - Retail Value $24

While I know a lot of people think that there are enough black eyeliners in subscription boxes and kits, I am always excited to try a new eyeliner! I’ve never seen one like this before, which has an Amazon clay pencil liner on one end and a liquid tip at the other end. Two eyeliners in one!

tarte Tarteist™ Double Take Eyeliner in Black open

The amazon clay pencil end applied smoothly and was creamy and easy to blend. It also hugged close to my waterline, helping to go with the dramatic eyeliner look I ended up going for.

tarte Tarteist™ Double Take Eyeliner in Black tip and cap

January 27, 2018 will forever be memorialized in my memory as the day I created my best ever winged eyeliner on my right eye using this felt-tipped eyeliner. It was dark, sharp, and just…great. Which means that when I started on my left eye I promptly messed up. I blame user error, not the eyeliner. I will use this eyeliner until both ends run dry.

Here are the swatches of lippie (top), eyeliners (liquid on the left and pencil on the right), the stellar setting powder (it took about 10 swipes to get this color to show and right around that 10th swipe I realized this wasn't a highlighter), and then the BECCA highlighter.

And here is the selfie using all of the products in the box! I used the Milk blur stick as a primer under my Mac Studio Fix powder foundation. I ended up going for a dramatic black eyeliner look using both ends of the eyeliner, with the pencil on my bottom lash line and the liquid on top. I did two coats of my Marc Jacobs Mascara and applied the Anastasia liquid lipstick to my lips. I then went a little crazy with the BECCA highlighter. I used it as an eyeshadow, on the bridge of my nose, and the highest points of my cheeks. I then took my finger and started patting it on top of the dried lipstick, blending it out to the corners. I finished with the Stellar setting powder all over my face. What do y’all think?

The Verdict: This Selfie Kit is $28 plus shipping. Sephora promises a value of $100. By my math, the box value is $100.36. That is a great value for the cost of the box, but to me, the value actually feels higher because five of the six products are ones that I will continue to use. If I didn't already have a plethora of setting powders, I would probably be more into the Stellar face powder as well. I really think this kit was curated thoughtfully, and overall I am a big fan!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, this is still available for purchase! Click here to buy this wonderful box of lip joy.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $28 plus free shipping. If you are a VIB Rouge you get free two-day shipping on all purchases, and for everyone else, you get free shipping on a $50 purchase. If you purchase from Sephora online more than twice a year, I recommend checking out the Sephora Flash shipping program, which is $10 for a year of free 2-day shipping on all purchases, no minimum purchase requirement. That being said, for each item in the box you are paying approximately:

  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick: $4.06

  • Marc Jacobs Mascara: $3.85
  • Milk Makeup Blur Stick: $3.91
  • Stellar Cosmic Face Powder: $4.18
  • Tarte Double Take Eyeliner: $6.70

I love how real you are with your reviews. You’re not afraid to admit when you don’t know how to use something or don’t know what it is. That’s a great inclusion, especially because it happens to me often. 😂

I’ve never tried the Becca highlights as eyeshadow, I might have to try that out today! Great idea!

I apologize in advance, but when explaining this box is still available for purchase, you forgot to change “lip joy” from your Sephora lip kit review. I do a lot of editing work and annoy so many people when I correct their errors. 😂 It’s a real problem!

Oops! Totally my fault. Though this is perhaps the most polite way I have ever had my errors corrected, so I thank you for that!
