Subscription Box Favorites

We're starting a new monthly post highlighting our favorite discoveries from subscription boxes! Here are our favorite items from the past month:

The Item: Saucefly Demi Glace

The Cost: Saucefly boxes cost $100 + shipping (Eugene, OR residents receive a shipping credit of $15 per box. Shipping is free to states west of the Colorado Rockies. Shipping to the east coast is $25.)

From: Saucefly (Coupon: Use code MSA20 to save $20 off your first box!)

Why I love it: December was my second month reviewing Saucefly, and I absolutely love the concept. Every month, professional chef Chef Sara Willis makes and bottles a selection of organic products and then cold ships them out to subscribers. The last couple of boxes have contained salad dressings, sauces, marinades, cocktail mixers, dips, and chutneys, and I’ve been absolutely blown away by the taste and quality of everything I’ve received. December’s box included this jar of demi glace for beef wellington (Chef Sara posted a video walkthrough of the recipe on the Saucefly site) that was outstanding. This was my first time making beef wellington, and I’m thrilled with how it came out. The pastry was golden and crisp, and the steak was perfectly cooked. Best of all, though, was the demi glace; it was thick, rich, and full of flavor. I love that Saucefly sends chef-made, restaurant-quality products and encourages me to break out of cooking comfort zone!

cat-claws-club-december-2016-treat9

The Item: Inaba Ciao Churu Treat (tuna flavor)

The Cost: $0.75

From: Cat Claws Club

Why I Love It: Once again, my favorite item is decided by what makes the best cat pictures. This is a repeat item for me and I very well may have picked it as a favorite in a past month, as well. But I had so much fun watching my cats eat this, and my cats thought it was awesome. (Plus, it’s affordable!)

The Item: Classic Puffer Coat

The Cost: $70 in the Golden Tote boutique, $45 as an add-on to a tote purchase (or, as always, you can order it as a chosen item in your tote purchase)

From: Golden Tote

Why I love it: This coat is so much higher quality than I thought it would be when I picked it for my tote! It's so thick and warm, it's a double-zip close with a zip-out inner shell that's lined with faux fur, and the cuffs around the sleeves and waist are perfect. The color is great, and I love the flattering design with the waist-accentuating pattern on the sides. I also love that the hood zips all the way up, which is perfect for keeping my hood up on windy days!

Bekki's Favorite:

texas-market-december-2016-jammit-peppermint

The Item: Jammit Jam - Cherry Clove Cabernet

The Cost: $8.00

From: My Texas Market (Coupon: Save 25% off your first box with code MAIL25!)

Why I love it: This jam...it's amazing. I love the complex flavors of the clove and cabernet mixed with the sweet cherry. I ate this on a biscuit, but I think it would be amazing with cheese as well - I'm picturing brie, but Jammit recommends Gouda, which is probably outstanding as well! This was the perfect item for a December box - it can be gifted or used for a holiday appetizer. I loved it!

Nancy S' Favorite:

campuscube-girls-winter-2016-brownie-brittle-closeup

The Item: Sheila G’s Brownie Brittle Chocolate Chip with White Drizzle

The Cost: $2.79

From: CampusCube (Coupon: For a limited time, save $5 off any order with code MSA5)

Why I love it: Brownie brittle is already amazing, but when you add white chocolate drizzle to the mix, it becomes irresistible. The drizzle adds extra creamy sweetness to the crisp brownie flavor for a decadent snack. I can see this eaten in different ways too, such as a topper for vanilla ice cream.

The Cost: Value $44.00

From: Clean Beauty Box (Coupon: Save 10% off your first box with code MSA10)

Why I love it: This balm is truly amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever put something so restorative on my face that didn’t feel greasy or heavy but moisturized so instantly and thoroughly. I am obsessed with this product and I’m so thrilled Clean Beauty introduced me to it!

Shawn's Favorite:

The Item:  Gypsy Soul Organics Family Tree Aromatherapy

The Cost:  $19.99

From: Wellness Tribe (Coupon: Save 15% off any subscription with code WELLNESSADDICTION15)

Why I love it: Since I received this item, I've been using it almost every day. It's a great scent for December and it might be my all-time favorite winter aromatherapy mix! It has everything I love – cedarwood, clove, and coffee smells are what I get most but the website also lists cinnamon bark, cassia root, bergamot, lavender, cardamom, and nutmeg.

The Item: Lamami Champagne Sabre

The Cost: $79

From: Bespoke Post - Brut (Coupon: Save 25% off your first box! with coupon code ADDICT25)

Why I love it: I'm not sure that I've ever had more fun shooting photos for a review. I was so skeptical of how the sabre would work - but it was a bit of a thrill to crack the top of the bottle and watch it fly about 40 feet!

Liz's Favorite:

box-of-style-the-zoe-report-winter-2016-0030-1

The Item: Sunday Riley Tidal Enzyme Brightening Water Cream

The Cost: $65

From: Rachel Zoe Box of Style Winter (Coupon: Use coupon code MSABOSF10 to save $10 off your first box!)

Why I love it: This cream is SO hydrating! It’s infused with cucumber so that scent adds to the spa-like refreshing vibe of the cream. You can use it as a day cream, night cream, or even add a little over makeup to hydrate your skin and give you a dewy finish. And it is super gentle on my skin. This it the type of skincare product that I would actually pay full retail price for!

I didn’t like the Sunday Riley cream. It “pilled” on me — do you guys know what I mean? I rubbed my face maybe 10-20 minutes after applying and the lotion came off in little balls. I don’t know what that means, that it didn’t absorb enough? That I used too much? The same thing happens with Oil of Olay night creams, but definitely does not happen with all creams/lotions I use. In fact, I now use this “pilling” as a litmus test for good night creams (which is why I rubbed at my face after applying the SR Tidal, and was disappointed it flunked my test).

Judy

Do you use on a cleansed face? I haven’t noticed any pilling with the Sunday Riley cream, but this has happened to me with other creams if I didnt cleanse/cleanse well, particularly before I started using a clarisonic. Prior to that, using a face scrub helped before application.

Hi Judy! Yes, I always put on my night creams after cleansing and using a gentle exfoliant. Sometimes I use a Konjac sponge, sometimes my Foreo or this really cool face brush I got in a box (can’t remember the brand name, but it’s a manual face brush with super soft bristles). So I think I do a thorough job of cleansing and my skin always feels super smooth right before applying lotion or cream. I don’t *think* it’s just dead skin sloughing off, especially as this only happens with a very few of the creams tried. I’m frustrated because I’ve heard so many raves about Tidal. Maybe I’ll give it one more shot. 😉

Ragan

I haven’t used this product, but I have definitely gotten pilling with skincare products before, even on cleansed and exfoliated skin. If you have a multi-step skincare routine, it can happen that some of the products used in different steps are incompatible. So that is another possibility.

Personally I don’t like Sunday Riley products because they cause skin sensitivity issues after only one or two uses for me, and I don’t typically have sensitive skin.

Sara

I still can’t over the Sunday Riley cream (loved every single thing in the Zoe box) it’s amazing. If there’s another sale on the winter box, I’d buy another just for the cream & then have some nice things for gifting.
