The Best Razor Subscriptions for Smooth Shaving in 2021

Best Razors for Women

Cartridge or safety razor? Five blades or just one? Aloe strip, or no aloe strip? Metal or plastic?

Shaving isn’t exactly complicated, but it’s one of those daily (or weekly) activities that requires the right approach — and high-quality products. The simple fact is that no shaving system works for every type of person (or every type of hair), and to shave well, you need an option that works for you.

A razor subscription can eliminate some of the hassle and simplify your routine. Many shaving clubs also provide helpful resources for a smoother shave with less irritation, and regardless of your budget, you can find affordable options that are far better than what you’d find on the shelves of your local convenience store.

We’ve collected a list of some of the best razor clubs for both men and women. Whether you’re switching to single-blades or sticking with the tried-and-true cartridge, we’ve found options to help you get a precise, clean shave every time. We’ve also included a few non-subscription options for those one-off orders (each list entry includes detailed information about what you’re getting and how much you’ll pay).

  1. Billie
  2. Flamingo
  3. Harry’s
  4. Dollar Shave Club
  5. OUI the People
  6. Others To Consider

Billie Razor Starter Kit including bluue handle, 2 cartridges, and magnetic holder arranged around shipping bag.

Image via our review.

Cost:$9.00 for the starter kit.

Subscription Options: $9.00 per 4-pack of 5-blade cartridges. Choose your auto-ship frequency: every 1, 2, or 3 months.

Other Products from Billie: Body lotion, shave cream, and body wash in fruity botanical scents, as well as a razor travel case. They also just introduced non-shaving beauty items like lip balm, dry shampoo, and facial wipes, all of which are geared towards women (with no “pink tax” included).

Why We Like It: Billie’s shaving products are designed for women, with sleek designs that easily navigate angles and curves. The 5-blade cartridges handle body hair with ease while cutting down on shave time, and a silky aloe-and-charcoal bar at the top of each razor helps to nurture sensitive skin.

While razor aesthetics aren’t an especially important part of shaving, we dig the five fun colors — after all, there’s nothing wrong with matching your accessories to your decor. The best part: Billie’s razors fit into a magnetic holder. Stick the holder to a shower wall or other flat surface, and you’ll keep your razors sharp and rust-free while maintaining easy access.

For Men or Women? Billie’s products are designed for women, but the design is fairly gender neutral. A great shave is a great shave, and this shaving club delivers.

Flamingo starter kit including taro handle, 2 cartridges, body lotion, shave foam, suction cup holder, and a purple carry pouch on a blue background

Image via our review.

Cost: $9.00 for the razor or $16.00 for the shave set. $9.00 per 4-pack of 5-blade cartridges.

Subscription Options: No subscriptions are available for Flamingo. Simply order more when needed.

Other Products from Flamingo: Foaming shave gel and body lotion with a floral scent, ingrown spot treatment, Mons Mist conditioning spray, and wax strips for body and face. Several bundles are available.

Why We Like It: Flamingo blades are surrounded by a generous aloe bar that helps the razor glide across your skin. It also has a perfectly weighted handle fully surrounded by a rubbery grip that comes in three soft colors. Flamingo no longer offers an auto-ship option, but if you’re worried about unused blades piling up in your vanity, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, and the shave set should provide everything you need to get going.

For Men or Women? While Flamingo is dedicated to women-positive causes, their products feature gender-neutral styling. Several male reviewers have noted that the company’s products provide a smoother look and less irritation than other disposables on the market — throw in their excellent shave gel and body lotion, and you’re on your way to a worry-free shave.

Harry's razor starter kit with blue handle, shave gel, and travel case on a blue background

Image via our review.

Cost: $8.00 for the starter set (one handle, one cartridge, foaming shave gel, and a travel cover). Complete razors start at $9.00.

Subscription Options: $9.00 per 4-pack of cartridges every 2, 3, or 5 months

Other Products from Harry’s: Shaving products, skincare, shower products, hair products, and accessories. Several sets and bundles are available from $16-$35.

Why We Like It: Like Flamingo, Harry’s has a wonderfully weighted handle surrounded by a rubbery grip in one of 3 bold colors. Their products are marketed towards men, but as we wrote above, a great razor can work wonders for anyone.

Harry’s 5-blade German-made cartridges make shaving a breeze, cutting down the time of your shave without sacrificing the precision. The travel case included in the starter kit helps keep the razor safe (and looks pretty spiffy, too).

This shaving club cuts out all the extras — though their store has plenty of excellent personal care and aftershave products — so you’ll get exceptional razors without gimmicks or pushy marketing. Every year, Harry’s donates 1% of sales to nonprofits that provide mental health care services to men in need.

For Men or Women? Harry’s razors are designed for men. Again, a razor is a razor, but some of the other options we’ve covered (such as Billie) have styling that would be more appropriate for body hair.

Dollar Shave Club starter kit with handle, shave butter, and pack of cartridges on blue backgound

Image via our review.

Cost: $5.00 for the starter set (exactly what’s featured in the set changes frequently). Individual razors start at $7.00.

Subscription Options: Cartridge refills range from $4-$10, depending on the number of blades you choose. All of Dollar Shave Club’s products offer an auto-ship option—set a delivery frequency that works for you and easily skip deliveries as needed.

Other Products from Dollar Shave Club: A full line of shaving, skincare, shower, oral care, hair products, and accessories.

Why We Like It: Dollar Shave Club is one of the few subscriptions to offer more than one cartridge style (subscribers can choose from 4 blades or 6). They’re also one of the most well-known and popular shaving clubs around—for good reason. You’ll find an incredible variety of grooming accessories here, and the auto-ship options provide an easy way to maintain a stock of high-quality products.

As the name implies, Dollar Shave Club is also affordable, and their 30-day money-back guarantee provides some peace of mind. Your first box includes trial-sized products for setting up the perfect routine. Their site allows users to easily adjust shipping frequency, and razor subscriptions can be cancelled with a few quick clicks.

Overall, Dollar Shave Club is one of the most versatile shaving subscription services online. If you’re looking for disposable razors and no-frills grooming products, this is a great place to start.

For Men or Women? All of Dollar Shave Club’s products are unisex. The site notes that women especially love the Shave Butter, Repair Serum, Hand Cream, and (of course) the Blades.

Oui Shave rose gold razor, pack of blades, and shave cream group on blue background.

Image via our review.

Cost: $67.50 or $75.00 for the razor (depending on color) plus 10 blades.

Subscription Options: There are no longer subscription options for this brand.

Other Products from OUI the People: SUGARCOAT Shave Gel-to-Milk, FEATHERWEIGHT Hydrating Body Gloss, and DEEP V Bikini Line Sheet Mask. Several different sets are available too.

Why We Like It: We can appreciate a touch of luxury, and OUI the People has luxury to spare. Their razors feature a gorgeous rose-gold metal surface, which isn’t just beautiful; the material is built to last without rusting, and the heavy feel of the metal makes precision shaving easier. The company also offers a black matte version for a more minimalist look.

Single double-edge blades create less waste than plastic cartridges, and while there’s a learning curve, you can get an incredibly close shave with classic-style razors. The weight of the razor guides the shaving process, trimming hair without pulling it away from your skin. That means a better shave for people with skin sensitivities—and OUI the People offers online resources to help you learn how to optimize your routine.

While this shaving club requires a fairly expensive initial purchase, it’s affordable over time; new blades are cheap, and both men and women can benefit from the single-blade revolution.

For Men or Women? OUI the People’s razors use single double-edged blades, so any shaver could use them. Their styling is slightly more feminine than masculine (but that’s our subjective opinion).

We love that Bevel is dedicated to addressing the needs of POC, and anyone can use their products to get a better shave. Start with one of their bundles, then set up recurring orders to re-up at a discount.

For Men or Women? Bevel’s razors are unisex. Their marketing targets men, but ladies, don’t worry; safety razors work for anyone, and there’s nothing especially masculine about the design.

Image via Gilette Venus

Cost: $7.00 for the 5-blade starter kit. You can also design your plan from $10.00-$25.00 for your first order (includes handle and 4 refills), depending on the handle and refill cartridge styles you choose.

Subscription Options: $10.00-$21.00/4-pack every 1, 2, or 3 months. Choose from 7 different cartridge styles.

Other Products from Venus by Gillette: Other Gillette-owned grooming products, such as Olay skincare and Secret deodorant, which are available as add-ons.

About Venus: Venus by Gillette is a shave club for women featuring the Venus line of razors. You’ve seen those in the razor aisle — they’re a classic for a good reason, and Gilette continues to add features to make your shaving journey a little more comfortable.

Choose from 4 handle styles and 7 different types of blade cartridges. You can choose the frequency of your deliveries and add products from brands like Olay to your orders, so this is a one-stop shop for everything you need. Be sure to check out their kits, as the full Gillette lineup has options for targeting specific types of body hair or treating common shave issues.

For Men or Women? Venus razors are designed specifically for women. Guys could use them (and if you’re living with a man, you might find him borrowing your Venus every once in a while), but the styling is very feminine.

Ready to try Venus? Subscribe here.

Cost: $12.00 for your first order (includes a razor handle and four 3-blade razors) OR $18.00 for their 5-blade option

Subscription Options: $12.00/6-pack of 3-blade cartridges OR $18.00/6-pack of 5-blade cartridges every 2 or 3 months. (Billed monthly.)

Other Products from Happy Legs Club: Organic shave soap in lavender, oatmeal spice, and citrus scents.

About Happy Legs Club: Happy Legs Club is a razor subscription for — you guessed it — shaving without succumbing to razor burn and irritation. They have “hers” and “his” options, both of which feature ergonomically designed razors and refill cartridges. You’ll also receive organic shave soap for a closer, more luxurious shave.

Their cartridges feature a Vitamin E & Aloe Vera lubricating strip, and reviewers say that the razors are suitably sharp. The real draw here is the price; for less than $20 every two months, you’ll never worry about running out of cartridges.

This razor subscription ships in simple packaging, and it doesn’t have the bells and whistles of the other shave clubs we’ve covered. That’s the point: You need razors and shave soap. Happy Legs Club has razors and shave soap. Hey, who ever said that personal care was complicated?

For Men or Women? Happy Legs Club is marketed towards women, and the razors are designed to target body hair.

Ready to try Happy Legs Club? Subscribe here!

Cost: $18.00 for the starter kit (a rose gold metal handle w/ pink or purple accent, pack of four 6-blade diamond-coated razor refills, safety cover, and shave tote).

Subscription Options: $18.00 every 2, 3, or 4 months for 8 razor refills.

Other Products from All Girl Shave Club: They also offer a whipped shave butter for $9.00 with a subscription or you can add on various beauty products as one-time purchases.

About All Girl Shave Club: All Girl Shave Club was started by busy mom Jessica in 2016 to make her shaving experience easier and more enjoyable. They bill their razor as a “luxury razor system,” and given the gorgeous rose-gold handle, we’d say they’re doing just fine. The cartridges have a flexible head, which adjusts easily to curves and cuts through those problem areas with ease.

In addition to razor refills, they offer add-on items (we’d recommend the whipped shave butter, which is a perennial favorite with subscribers). Subscription plans can be customized based on your shaving habits.

For Men or Women? Do we really need to say it? All Girl Shave Club is intended for women.

I canceled Billie after a couple months. The razors work so well the first couple times, but if someone takes a really hot shower and the soap thing around the blade melts and goes all over the blades so it’s no longer usable 🙄

Been using Harry’s and they are terrible. They cut me everywhere and make a squeeking sound when shaving as if I’m dry shaving but I’m not. I don’t have sensitive skin and still ended up with razor burn

Anyone have an update? Between DSC and Athena which is better? I tried Billie but the razor became dull quickly and the head popped off a lot.

Amanda

Athena for sure! There blades never pop off and seriously amazing shave

Diane

I switched from Billie to athena, really cant believe they didn’t make the list. I got tired of the Billie razors popping off all the time.

Alyssa L. Clark

I’m sad that Athena Club didn’t make the list as i have reviews several reviews where Athena beat Billie! Many similarities however Athena razor built much better, with perfect weight to it and better grip. I’m still leaning towards Athena and think you ladies should check it out!

Ada

I have tried Billie, Flamingo, Joy, Venus and in the last month – Athena. Nothing beats Athena, nope not even the very influencer-praised Billie. I have very thick, coarse, dark hair and it works so well. Athena for the win!!

Heather R

That’s funny you say that after the first time the cartridge is dull because I have had it for several months and shave everyday so I get the 4 cartridges each month but I could go through 4 cartridges in a week. Then my problem was your subscription is every month but they don’t process your order until the beginning of the next month because of course they want to make sure your payment goes through but then it takes between 1-2 weeks to arrive so I was not getting my next set of cartridges until mid-month which at that time I had been out for 3 weeks and had to buy a drug store brand. Defeated the subscription. I did email them and voice my concern and that I would need to cancel if that was just their process and nothing else I could do. I will say their customer service was great. They emailed me right back and then I received a box from them with I think 14 cartridges to cover me. Unfortunately that was months ago and I have since ran out of those and run out of my monthly cartridges before end of week 2. Not sure what to do I can’t seem to find a razor worth writing a review about. Hands down though Billie has great customer service reps!

Stina

Add Athena club to the review list, I always like Venus, but expensive for me, Billie is okay… not terribly impressed… Flamingo is the most appealing, great design and price point

Jenn

I loved Billie about a year ago. The strip went from aloe to some charcoal goop that is slimy and gross. The razors themselves have changed as well. I have since changed to Athena and am much happier with them.

Jessica McClendon

I started using Billie in 2018 and initially loved them. It just isn’t the quality it used to be. At some point I tried flamingo (that stylish handle lured me in) but the razor wouldn’t stay on and the head was a little too flexible so I never ordered razor replacements. I’ve placed an order with Athena now and am hoping it’ll be a solid replacement for Billie.

Jamie Lynn

I’ve recently joined Dollar Shave Club cause it was $5 for a starter kit! And I have to admit I had to Google like how what worked and in which order but I started with the Shave butter and then used post shave due! And I was really SURPRISED! I have psoriasis so I have to careful wat I use! Venus razors was the only ones that I had fewer cuts n Knicks. But it’s expensive buying razor refills! So I decided try something new! I LOVE IT SO FAR! I usually shave every other day sometimes every day and that’s because I would have stubbles on the 2nd day! With dollar Shave club I was super smooth on day 3 like day 1!!! Wat! Wow!

Jessica

I have tried several of these, but IMHO they do not hold a candle to Athena! Your best bet is just to try it! Use code JESSICA3926 and that will make it only $4 to try and I promise you’ll see that it’s the best bang for your buck out there. Best quality shave, too.

Monica

I was using DSC for years, and started getting a lot of irritation and red bumps. I just switched over to Athena, and it’s much better! The starter kit is only $9, but you can get it for just $4 if you use my code, MONICA8962 <3

Melissa Pickering

I had the same experience! I used DSC for years and started getting horrible irritation and ingrown hairs. I just attributed it to getting older bc it seems literally everything has changed in the last couple years. Thanks for the Athena rec.

Elaine

I swear by Athena club which isn’t on this list. But I have started shaving with them as of a month ago and it’s phenomenal.

Tiffany P.

I used DSC for years, started before there were any other shaving subscription options and WAY before there were any targeted to women’s shaving needs.

I switched to Billie about 2 years ago and initially I loved it. The magnetic holder is simple yet so awesome! I have fibromyalgia and often find it too hard on my body to stand in the shower long enough to do everything I need to do so I take baths more often than showers. I eventually purchased an extra handle and magnetic holder ago I’d have one in my shower and another right next to my bathtub. I would never have done that if I hadn’t loved my Billie razors.

Unfortunately, over the last 6 months, give or take, the razor cartridges keep popping off of the handles while I’m shaving! It doesn’t seem to matter how much pressure I’m using, whether I’m using a brand new cartridge for the first time or one that I’ve used a few times already. It has happened while shaving my underarms, legs, bikini area, so thay doesn’t seem to be a determining factor either. It’s incredibly frustrating and trying to reattach the cartridge while my hands, the razor, and the cartridge are all wet and slippery from the shaving cream and water. I had experienced this kind of problem with numerous drug store razors, both men’s and women’s styles, which is one of the main reasons, aside from cost, that I decided to switch to DSC and then Billie.

I find it very frustrating that I never had any problems or complaints with my Billie razors and cartridges until about 6 months ago. I don’t know if they changed something about their design or if it’s necessary to replace the Billie razor handles after a certain period of time or after so many uses but I’ve never seen anything from the company stating that razor handles should be replaced after a given period of time or number of uses.

I also have had an issue with excessive ingrown hairs and razor bumps on my legs for about the last 10 years. I haven’t ever been able to determine why but none of the many razors I’ve used have made any difference one way or another.

So if anyone has ever had the same problem with the Billie cartridges popping off of the razor handle while shaving, I would appreciate any helpful input or even just to hear that I’m not the only one!

And I would be so thankful if anyone can make any suggestions for the ingrown hair and razor bumps issues! Any recommendations for a razor that might be better for me to try. 😁

Christy

Athena. I’ve read many say the same thing about Billie

CC

“I also have had an issue with excessive ingrown hairs and razor bumps on my legs for about the last 10 years. I haven’t ever been able to determine why but none of the many razors I’ve used have made any difference one way or another.”

I’ve had this my entire life and it took years to discover what it is — keratosis pilaris. “This condition develops when the skin produces too much of a protein called keratin, which can block hair follicles and cause bumps to develop.” It’s an extremely common and benign skin condition, but it seems to affect people’s arms more, so my googling about legs took awhile for me to figure it out.

The best solution I’ve found is lots of exfoliation to keep the keratin plugs from trapping the hair follicles. There’s specific lotions to help with this, such as AmLactin. I hope this helps you!!

Maribeth

I am having the exact same problem!

RocketQueen94

Hey Tiffany!! I’m on the search now to change from Billie due to your EXACT ISSUE with the cartridges ALWAYS falling out. It wasn’t like this at first and I remember thinking I could go a couple of days before shaving again. Not anymore. I was headed to DSC, but now I have no idea where to go and I need razors SOON!! You are NOT the only one my dear! Not sure on the ingrown hairs other than shaving against the hair, which we already know. I’m gonna read the rest of these comments and pray to the razor gods, chuckle. <3

Betty J

I just cancelled my subscription to DSC, not because of their products but for the stupid issues they kept giving me with processing my orders and shipping. With every order it was a struggle to get it… I’m going to try Athena Club after seeing the bad reviews for Billie

Lauralee S.

I see that a few people were ordering Billie – wondering if anyone liked or didn’t like it?
From all the reviews, it looked like Billie was the worst of all……
Also, does anyone have OUI? I’m thinking of going with them.

RocketQueen94

Hey Lauralee!!, I LOVED Billie at first, but like Tiffany said above, I noticed the cartridges fall off ALL OF THE TIME!! And not even using hard pressure, then you get to search through the water and pray you don’t grab the sharp side. I have no idea who to choose now, but I need to pick one and FAST!

Bee

I use OUI and I swear by it! It took me like 6 months of thinking about it before I went ahead and bought it because of the upfront cost but I am so happy that I did! I’ve actually ended up saving money in the long run because the blades are so much less expensive and last for a really long time. Also I have super sensitive skin and it’s the only razor that has never given me any irritation. I completely recommend!!

Lee
