All About TasteCrate

TasteCrate Pros & Cons

While we love almost everything about TasteCrate, there are a few attributes of the company’s service that some customers may not be favorable of.

TasteCrate Pros

  • Up to 20 different snacks per box
  • Variety of snack types and tastes
  • Most snacks are healthier than those found in other box brands

TasteCrate Cons

  • Cannot customize snack boxes
  • Some snacks may be affected by transportation/handling (i.e. melted)
  • Some snacks are organic while others are not

What is TasteCrate?

Finding the right snacks that not only satisfy your taste buds, but are also free of unnecessary additives and chemicals can be quite the challenge these days! It seems like almost all of the snacks sold in stores contain some form of harmful ingredients that could impact your health in the long term or fuel binging tendencies. Wouldn’t it be great to finally find foods for snack time that taste amazing, fill the spot, and don’t leave you hangry after 30 minutes of eating them? TasteCrate now makes this a reality!

This is the up-and-comer in the snack subscription box world whose mission is to supply relatively healthy, unparalleled snacks to customers all throughout the US. TasteCrate realizes that monthly snack subscription boxes are incredibly common to come by, so its individual snacks shouldn’t be.

How Does TasteCrate Work?

The process for signing up for TasteCrate is absolutely hassle-free. All you have to do is go online to its website, click the “Get Started” button on the homepage, and then add its monthly subscription option to your cart. From there, you’ll just need to provide your billing and shipping information and you’re good to go! Customers typically receive their snack box within 3-5 business days after placing their order. Once you’ve purchased your first snack box, you will be billed monthly on the same day of the month as your initial order and then shipped 1 snack crate per month.

What’s Inside My TasteCrate Snack Box?

Taste Crate Review

Each snack box from TasteCrate contains anywhere from 15 to 20 snacks consisting of items such as protein bars, nuts, pretzels, cookies, chips, crackers, and more. TasteCrate likes to build the palates of its customers, so although you’re not allowed to customize your snack packs, you can certainly have faith that your box will be filled to the brim with perfectly-portioned indulgences.

Who Should Try TasteCrate?

We think everyone should try out TasteCrate! However, there are certain individuals that should maintain some form of caution prior to purchasing a snack box due to their age or dietary allergies and preferences:

  • Children under the age of 4
  • Individuals with certain allergies (i.e. nuts, shellfish)
  • Vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians
  • People with the MTHFR gene variant (i.e. can’t digest folic acid properly)
  • People who are on keto or follow a low-carb diet

If you or someone in your family falls under one of the above categories, you may not be able to eat all of the snacks that come in your snack box. That said, you can certainly share the snacks you don’t eat and spread the love for TasteCrate with others!

TasteCrate Pricing

TasteCrate is available for $39.99 per month and even offers free shipping for all orders. Although it may appear that TasteCrate is slightly more expensive than other snack box subscriptions, there are two major things you should keep in mind:

  1. The quality of individual snacks is far superior to most other brands. Each snack box contains up to 50% more snacks than some of its leading competitors.
  2. While you may end up paying slightly more for the price per serving, the trade-off is certainly worth it.

TasteCrate Shipping

You can usually expect to see your TasteCrate box arrive at your doorstep between 3 and 5 days after placing your order. If you want to put your mind to ease, you can check the status of your order online in the Snack Tracker section of your account. Currently, TasteCrate ships all throughout the United States – territories, military bases, and embassies included.

My Experience With TasteCrate

Taste Crate yellow box with snacks on outside of box

I was blessed with the opportunity to try out TasteCrate for myself! Here’s a look into my experience and what I thought about each of the snacks.

Snacks I Received

I received my snacks in a large yellow TasteCrate Box. It contained the following 15 items:

  • Skinny Lily Popped Water Lily Seeds (White Cheddar)
  • Sun & Swell Date & Cashew Bites (Lemon Coconut)
  • heywell Energy & Focus (Sparkling Strawberry Lemon)
  • Mezcla Plant Protein Bar (Peruvian Cocoa Peanut Butter)
  • Legally Addictive Crack Cookies (The O.G.)
  • Why Bars (Zesty Lemon)
  • Crispy Green All Mango
  • Whoa! Dough (Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough)
  • Pop Daddy Pretzels (Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel Sticks)
  • Vacadillos Carne Seca (Chile Lime)
  • LÜME Glow Granola (Lavender Vanilla)
  • Mavericks Kids Double Trouble Choc Cookiez
  • Split Nutrition Peanut Butter + Grape
  • Crazy Go Nuts (Banana Walnuts)
  • Cosmik Freeze-Dried Ice Cream (Strawberry)

Here’s what I thought about each snack:

Skinny Lily Popped Water Lily Seeds (White Cheddar)
3.5/5 stars

Image via Amazon.

Although I liked the white cheddar flavor, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the texture of this product. It was a bit hard to chew and lacked the crunch that most popcorn-like snacks have.

Sun & Swell Date & Cashew Bites (Lemon Coconut)
4.5/5 stars

Image via Sun & Swell.

Loved these bites! This 100% organic product was sourced from only 4 ingredients: cashews, dates, coconut, lemon peel. Now that’s what I call sweet simplicity!

heywell Energy & Focus (Sparkling Strawberry Lemon)
4.25/5 stars

Image via heywell.

I was excited to see that an adaptogenic drink was thrown into my snack mix! It definitely gave me an energy boost and I enjoyed the somewhat tangy taste. One thing to note about this product is that it’s made with erythritol which can cause digestive issues in some people. Thankfully, the amount was small enough to not have a noticeable effect.

Mezcla Plant Protein Bar (Peruvian Cocoa Peanut Butter)
4.0/5 stars

Image via Mezcla.

Definitely one of the better plant-based protein bars I’ve had. It has a wonderful crispy texture and smooth chocolate-peanut butter taste that wasn’t overly rich.

Legally Addictive Crack Cookies (The O.G.)
3.0/5 stars

Unfortunately by the time I received my box and opened up this snack to try it out it had melted and the cookies were stuck together. I really liked the idea behind the snack and its sweet-salty flavor combination, but it was hard to enjoy the snack in the state I received it.

Why Bars (Zesty Lemon)
4.25/5 stars

Image via Why Bars.

Another amazing organic snack included in my box! Although I wish that the protein serving was a bit higher, the product was solid overall and had a very smooth texture with a taste that incorporated a hint of lemon.

Crispy Green All Mango
5.0/5 stars

Image via Crispy Green.

How could you not love a product that’s made from 100% pure freeze-dried fruit and free of added sugar, additives and preservatives? The freeze-dried mango had a tangy, yet sweet flavor that simply melted in your mouth.

Whoa! Dough (Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough)
4.0/5 stars

Image via Whoa! Dough.

For a dairy-free, plant-based product I was wonderfully surprised at how similar the taste was to actual cookie dough! The product was a bit oily, but overall it was quite delicious and fixed my sweet tooth.

Pop Daddy Pretzels (Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel Sticks)
5.0/5 stars

Image via Amazon.

This was BY FAR my favorite snack! The pretzels were perfectly coated with cinnamon sugar yet still retained their saltiness throughout. This product has to be the ultimate sweet-and-salty snack!

Vacadillos Carne Seca (Chile Lime)
4.25/5 stars

Image via Vacadillos.

I’m usually not a huge fan of dried meat snacks, but the flavoring of this snack won me over! The product’s taste had a good kick to it without being too spicy or sour and it helped to bring out the natural flavor of the beef.

LÜME Glow Granola (Lavender Vanilla)
4.0/5 stars

Image via LÜME.

Wow, was this granola product fantastic! I had never tried a granola snack before that was infused with ingredients such as marine collagen peptides, french lavender, black sea salt, biotin, or peal powder – talk about top-of-the-line! It’s hard to find granola that’s not overly crunch or saturated with flavoring, yet Lume happened to find the best of both worlds when creating this snack.

Mavericks Kids Double Trouble Choc Cookiez
3.5/5 stars

Image via Amazon.

I wasn’t super blown away by this product. Don’t get me wrong, it didn’t taste bad, I just thought it was a bit on the bland side for a kids cookie and lacked the richness you may find in other similar products.

Split Nutrition Peanut Butter + Grape
3.75/5 stars

Image via Split Nutrition.

The product was good but a bit messy! I would have liked to have seen this snack made with higher quality ingredients, but this is definitely a product that most kids would like – moms, however, not so much.

Crazy Go Nuts (Banana Walnuts)
4.0/5 stars

Image via Crazy Go Nuts.

Another snack that stepped up to the plate in respect to being a great balance of crunchy, salty, and sweet. I’m a major fan of simple-ingredient snacks so I was happy to see this item included in my box.

Cosmik Freeze-Dried Ice Cream (Strawberry)
4.75/5 stars

Image via Cosmik.com.

To be honest, I didn’t think I would like this product much and I’m extremely glad to say that I was completely wrong about that. I remember trying freeze-dried ice cream as a kid and hating it, but Cosmik helped me convert back to being a fan! On top of that, this product is sourced from organic ingredients including peak season strawberries which is pretty rad for a freeze-dried snack.

What I Loved About TasteCrate

If I had to narrow down what I liked best about TasteCrate it would have to be the following 5 features:

  • Includes 100% organic snacks within its snack mix
  • Most snacks are on the low-calorie side
  • Several snacks are only made with a few ingredients, such as freeze-dried fruit
  • TasteCrate has an incredible selection of individual items
  • The snacks are not conventional and incredibly hard in most stores

What I Didn’t Like About TasteCrate

Although I liked a lot about TasteCrate, I have the following critiques:

  • Some snacks may be affected by shipping and handling (i.e. arrive melted)
  • Some snacks are made with lower quality ingredients
  • A few of the snacks are a bit messy to eat
  • Since no customization is allowed, some individuals may not be able to eat all of their snacks (i.e. allergies, dietary preferences)
  • It would be better if TasteCrate offered more options for boxes (i.e. plant-based/vegan, 100% organic)

My Verdict – Is TasteCrate Worth It?

TasteCrate is absolutely worth trying out! I was amazed at the variety of snacks that were included in my box and really enjoyed getting to learn about snack brands I had never heard of before. It’s refreshing to know that TasteCrate seeks to expand the palates of its customers and includes snacks that are not your run-of-the-mill, junk food items. I would definitely try out TasteCrate again and look forward to seeing what other snack foods it includes in its future snack subscription boxes.

I much prefer seeing MSA’s original photography on reviews — it helps me know exactly what to expect from a sub.
