I’ve really enjoyed my experiences with Stitch Fix this year, and decided it was time to add my 14 year-old son, who was up for mixing up his wardrobe a tiny bit. He’s about to enter high school, and was open to trying out a few new pieces. He’s never been a shopper, and is normally happy for me to just bring home larger sizes of his usual wardrobe staples. His wardrobe for the last few years has been:
- black or grey joggers
- black, grey or blue athletic shorts
- tech material solid t-shirts
...all topped with a hoodie. So we were intrigued - what could Stitch Fix pick that would expand his wardrobe and get him ready for his high school look?
Stitch Fix is an online personal styling service and one of the most popular kids' fashion subscriptions. You tell them all about your style and size preferences through their very specific style quiz, and then they send you a package of carefully selected stylish goodies to try on at home. The styling fee is $20 a month for your stylist, but that fee goes towards any items you choose to keep.

Style Quiz and Ordering
Having an existing Stitch Fix account, it was very easy to add on a family member. To start his profile, he answered some basic questions about his sizing and body type, and how he likes clothes to fit. While there were many questions, they seemed much more specific than the questions I was asked when I first used Stitch Fix years ago. This is a good thing. When I take my kids shopping I tend to ask questions like, "When you sit down does it feel like you will bust a seam?" rather than a more elegant, "How do you pants fit in the thigh?"
He then rated some outfits on whether he would wear them or not, and even which specific items of an outfit he might wear. He enjoyed this part slightly more than the sizing. Once he got the hang of it and saw that he could like certain items in an outfit and not want to wear the whole outfit, he chose a few likes that were outside of his normal athletic wear.
The style quiz then honed in on preferences for colors, patterns, specific clothing items to include (and avoid), as well as price point.
Together we put in a note to the stylist and picked our delivery day for the next week. I immediately noticed some differences from the process for my boxes, once the box shipped. For one, there was no preview before shipping. For my last few boxes, I was able to see what the stylist picked and decide whether to include them or have them replaced with another stylist pick before shipping.
Delivery
Just like a box I had ordered for myself a week and a half before, this box arrived really early. In this case, 5 days early. Maybe this is a positive for some people, but for both the boxes I picked the specific delivery date to align with my return from a trip. I didn’t want the boxes arriving and sitting around for days when I wasn’t even home. Thankfully, both times someone else was home to bring in the boxes, and extending the return date in the app was quick and easy.
What’s Inside
The items we received were very well-curated. We were very happy to receive a perfect pair of jeans, an athletic shirt, 2 short sleeve collared shirts, and a lightweight hooded pullover. All the items coordinated and could be worn together- a big win! I did notice that for my own boxes, I was able to pick how many items were in the box, from 5 up to 8. This box just showed up with 5 items. It felt a little underwhelming, after being used to getting 8 items.
01.Algo- Jacquard Performance Polo – Retail Value $39
Size: M | Color: Light Blue
This was a basic sports polo, but the color was just right, the drape was flattering, and it had a very subtle textured pattern. He was in need of a new (longer) polo, so this one was a keeper to wear when the occasion calls for a step up from an athletic t-shirt.
01.Algo AlgoFlex Ronan Performance Hoodie Top – Retail Value $38.97
Size: M | Color: Brown
This was a performance fabric, t-shirt weight pull on hoodie in a light tan color. I was surprised my son didn’t want to keep this. His brother tried it as well, and while it fit them both, he wasn’t a fan either. I guess it's because neither wears long sleeve shirts, even in the winter they layer a hoodie over a t-shirt.
01.Algo Mini Rip Stop Shorts-8” – Retail Value $45
Size: S | Color: Navy
These shorts were a great shade of blue - a light navy. My son found them very comfortable and the rip stop fabric gave the solid pants some tone-on-tone texture interest. They are a little shorter than what he usually wears, the kid is all legs right now as he continues to grow! But he had indicated in his style profile setup that he was open to this length. These will be worn immediately.
Hawker Rye Knit Twill Short Sleeve Button Down – Retail Value $49
Size: M | Color: Navy
This was, without a doubt, his favorite item in the fix! It was also the most of a jump from his typical style. This was a textured short sleeve collared button down. The twill knit gives some extra weight to the fabric, making it more substantial. He liked the cut, the fit, and how it felt. And a big bonus-it looked great with the jeans!
Flag & Anthem - Nashville Straight Fit Heritage Jeans – Retail Value $79.50
Size: 29", Inseam 32" | Color: Light Blue
These fit perfectly, which impressed us both. He currently wears a 29x32, which is not always a size that is easy to find. He found them comfortable, and a definite step up from his joggers. I was thrilled, because I can’t imagine going to the store for him to try on jeans would have been an enjoyable experience for either of us. I love that the stylist took all his input and was able to deliver the perfect pair.
Purchase and Returns

We ended up keeping all items, despite neither of my sons thinking they would ever wear the hoodie. With the way pricing works, our total would be higher to keep only the 4 items we wanted, than to keep all 5 items and get the 20% discount. I liked the hoodie, and think it will be great for one of my nephews who tends to wear long sleeves regularly. So it ended up working out in the end.
Takeaways
From start to finish, this was a positive experience for both me and my son. The quiz allowed him to express his interests and tastes easily, and his stylist found pieces that he will wear every day. Both he and I appreciated we could do all this without a grueling trip to the store (and changing rooms!). Most importantly, we ended up with 4 new items of clothing that definitely elevate his look, and a fifth item that his cousin will most certainly enjoy- all for a great value! With the 20% "Buy All Discount" our total went from $251.47 to $201.18.
