First Impressions

July is here, and we’re officially in the full swing of summer vacation! June was packed with baseball, and while July is starting out the same way, the end of the season is finally in sight. As much as I love watching my kiddos play sports, I also appreciate some downtime, and that’s exactly what I’m looking forward to this month.
Thanks to the holiday weekend, we got a little taste of that much-needed relaxation and finally had the chance to crack open this month’s TokyoTreat box. As we slowly made our way through the included booklet and sampled all 13 fun and unique snacks straight from Japan, opening the box truly felt like a treat.
After unboxing quite a few TokyoTreat boxes over the years, I can honestly say it’s still one of the most exciting subscription boxes to receive—and I’m definitely still a fan!
Keep reading to see all the delicious discoveries inside!
What's Inside the Box
To welcome us to TokyoTreat, we first received a cute polaroid type picture with a note from Ayumi, the TokyoTreat CEO. A sweet addition, this truly makes me feel like part of the family! ❤️
Along with more than a dozen tasty snacks, Tokyo Treat also includes a colorful magazine packed with snack information, cultural information, trivia, facts, and contests! While exact nutritional information isn't shared, (it is on the package, but unless you know how to read Japanese, you're probably out of luck), the pamphlet does include if a food contains a common allergen, what it might contain traces of, and if it is suitable for vegetarians. A great summary of this month's box, my boys loved reading through this guide!
Cookies & Cream KitKats - Retail Value $9.99
Almost every month, this subscription box includes a large bag of individually wrapped KitKats straight from Tokyo in a fun new flavor, and this month’s pick was Cookies & Cream! This is always one of our favorite parts of the box because we’re huge KitKat fans, and this flavor definitely didn't disappoint. White chocolate with crunchy cookie pieces coated the classic crispy wafer, creating a rich, chocolatey treat that was absolutely delicious. Best of all, there were plenty to share—though they still disappeared pretty quickly!
Gapuri Soft Candy
The next item we tried was definitely one of the most interesting in the box. This stretchy white candy had a taffy-like texture and was sprinkled with colorful confetti, giving it a fun birthday cake vibe. The flavor was described as "white soda," and while I wasn't exactly sure what that meant, it turned out to be sweet, unique, and really tasty.
The texture was a little surprising—it chewed almost like gum at first, and I wasn't sure if I was supposed to keep chewing or spit it out. Eventually, though, it broke down like a regular candy. It was a fun treat to try, and both the kids and I really enjoyed it!
Candy-KARA Microphone
The next item we received was a candy microphone. This cute little plastic toy was right up my kids' alley—it's exactly the kind of thing they would have begged for in the checkout line, and I probably would have said no.
Once we figured out how to open it, we discovered tiny strawberry-flavored chocolate balls inside. The chocolates were sweet and tasty, but the real fun came from the microphone itself. My kids immediately started dancing around the house, pretending to put on a concert, which was especially entertaining considering they're 11 and 13 years old! I definitely wasn't expecting that.
While there wasn't a huge amount of candy inside, it made for a fun little treat, and the laughs it brought to our house made it even better.
100,000,000 Yen Fish Jerky
The next treat we received was a 100,000,000 Yen Fish Jerky Slab. As I've mentioned before, I'm not a fan of fish, so this definitely wasn't a snack I was eager to try. Hank, however, volunteered to be the brave taste tester!
He loved the playful packaging, which looked like a giant stack of money, and was convinced it was going to be amazing. But the moment he opened it and took one whiff, his confidence disappeared. The strong fishy aroma was enough to scare him away, so he chickened out, and we handed it off to my husband to give it a try instead.
Nomu Nomu Jelly Drink
Some snack descriptions just make me wrinkle my nose a bit, and "jelly drink" is definitely one of them. Packaged like a pouch of applesauce, I was willing to give it a try, but the name alone didn't sound all that appetizing.
That said, I actually did try it since I'm a big fan of applesauce. The texture was very similar, though the flavor was a bit more diluted. The booklet suggested popping it in the freezer for an even tastier experience, but my youngest son ended up finishing it before we had the chance! His only critique? It could have used a little more sugar. Typical, right?
Pakkuru Cheese Corn Puffs
The next treat was easily my kids' favorite of the entire box. This large bag of cheese corn puffs was absolutely fantastic! After much deliberation, the kids declared them even better than Cheeto Puffs because they have a more ergonomic shape that fits your mouth better. (Kids say the funniest things!)
These puffs were easy to grab, generously coated in cheesy seasoning, and incredibly tasty. It was a surprisingly large bag, and the kids must have been especially hungry because they polished off the entire thing during our taste test! I managed to snag a handful before they disappeared, but those cheese puffs were flying—they were just that good!
CRUNKY Chocolate Balls
Chocolate is always a win for me, so I was excited to try these CRUNKY chocolate balls. At first glance, they reminded me of milk chocolate versions of Junior Mints!
Flavor-wise, they had a sweet and salty caramel taste with a light, crispy crunch. It wasn't quite as crunchy as a Crunch bar, but there was just enough texture to make them interesting. I had high hopes for these, and while they were perfectly enjoyable, they weren't quite as amazing as I expected them to be. I was a little disappointed because I was hoping they'd become one of my favorites.
Sour Paper Candy
The kids spotted this sour paper candy sheet right away and couldn't wait to dig in! We have similar candies here in the U.S., but this version was a little less sweet. It had a fruity, fruit punch-like flavor with just the right amount of sourness—not too intense, but enough to make it fun. It tasted really good, and the kids absolutely loved it. They definitely wouldn't be disappointed if this snack showed up in a future TokyoTreat box!
Ramune Candy with Mystery Toy
This next snack was another winner! The kids love treats that come with extra surprises, and this was one of those fun finds. Featuring eight little round candies along with a separate small box, we weren’t quite sure what to expect at first.
We soon discovered that the candies are sweet and actually make a whistling sound when you blow into them. It also came with a fun little spinning top toy! This was definitely one of our favorites.
Pandaro Cookie
I appreciate a good shortbread cookie, and this butter version was delicious! Shaped like a panda bear (though ours arrived in a few broken pieces), it was a cute treat with a slightly sweet and salty flavor.
Overall, we all enjoyed this cookie, though we wouldn’t have minded a larger one to share as a family!
Vegan Potage Ramen
The next item we received was actually more of a meal than a snack! This month’s box included a package of vegan potage ramen. I haven’t made it yet, but I know the kids will enjoy it since it doesn’t contain any fish.
To prepare it, you simply boil water, add the noodles and soup base, and stir. It’s easy enough that the kids can make it themselves, which I really appreciate.
Puri Puri Prince Cake
Packaged cake is sometimes a hit or miss for us, and this month it was more of a miss. While the cake had a lightly sweet chocolate flavor, it was quite dry and not as enjoyable as we had hoped. The kids thought it was okay, but I would have preferred a different treat.
Zunoupan Bread Bites
The final item I received was a cute package of bread bites. The pamphlet described them as soft and fluffy, but we found them to be a bit more dense and chewy. They had a lightly sweet flavor and would probably have been nice with some jam, but on their own they were a little plain.
The Verdict
As you may know, I have a lot of experience reviewing snack boxes—and after several months of receiving TokyoTreat, I can honestly say this is an amazing subscription and our absolute favorite of all time! After browsing the pamphlet, tasting all the snacks, and checking out the extra online offers, my family is beyond impressed. This month’s curation was a nice mix of sweet and savory snacks, and my kids really like everything except 100,000,000 Yen fish jerky! Overall, we were once again impressed by the variety and some of the best packaging we’ve seen in any snack box. We’re already looking forward to August's box and have our fingers crossed for more chocolate and individually wrapped candy fun! Any guesses on next month’s theme? Comment below!

To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, you are able to sign up to receive this particular box until 9/15.
Value Breakdown: For $37.50 + $12.50 shipping, you're receiving 13 different Japanese snacks. At about $3.85 a pack, this is a bit pricier than some American snacks, but because it is shipping from Japan and creates an entire experience, it's unlikely you could order these snacks separately for cheaper.
