First Impressions

It’s June, and we only have two days of school left. This year has been a complete whirlwind, and I’m so excited for a chance to sleep in! That being said, I’m always on the lookout for opportunities to spend time with my family, so this month’s TokyoTreat box arrived at the perfect time. My kids and I sat down together to explore the box, which was filled with thirteen fun and unique snacks straight from Japan. It was such a treat to open and discover everything inside.
After unboxing quite a few TokyoTreat boxes over the years, I can honestly say it’s still one of the most exciting subscription boxes to receive—and I’m absolutely a fan!
Keep reading to see all the delicious discoveries inside.
What's Inside the Box
To welcome us to TokyoTreat, we first received a cute polaroid type picture with a note from Ayumi, the TokyoTreat CEO. A sweet addition, this truly makes me feel like part of the family! ❤️
Along with more than a dozen tasty snacks, Tokyo Treat also includes a colorful magazine packed with snack information, cultural information, trivia, facts, and contests! While exact nutritional information isn't shared, (it is on the package, but unless you know how to read Japanese, you're probably out of luck), the pamphlet does include if a food contains a common allergen, what it might contain traces of, and if it is suitable for vegetarians. A great summary of this month's box, my boys loved reading through this guide!
Banana KitKats - Retail Value $6.50
Almost every month, this subscription box includes a large bag of individually wrapped KitKats straight from Tokyo in a fun new flavor—and this month’s flavor was banana!
I had never tried a banana KitKat before and wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Some banana-flavored candies can taste artificial, but these were surprisingly delicious. Chocolatey with a banana cream twist, these KitKats had a unique flavor profile that was both fun and impressive. The kids enjoyed them too, finding the unexpected flavor exciting and different. We’d definitely love to see these included again in a future box!
Chocolate Donut
The next item we received was an interesting one. This chocolate doughnut was quite dry, which I expected after noticing the coffee cup on the packaging. While it had a subtle chocolate flavor, the texture was just too dry for my taste. I'm not much of a coffee-and-doughnut "dunker," so this snack wasn't really for me. The kids weren't particularly impressed with it either, but it was still fun to try something new.
Soda Powdered Drink
The next item we received was a drink packet that was supposed to be fresh soda flavored. This green powder didn't come with instructions in the booklet, so I simply mixed it with some cold water. Unfortunately, I must have added too much water because the flavor ended up being very diluted. It produced a slight fizz, but overall it tasted more like lightly flavored fruity water than soda.
Mini Caramel Rice Cracker Bites
The next sweet treat we received was a generously sized bag of caramel rice cracker bites. Looking a bit like Cocoa Puffs, these little caramel-coated balls were crunchy and packed with flavor. The sweet caramel coating paired perfectly with the rice cracker base, and the kids really enjoyed them. They reminded me a little of Honey Smacks cereal, and they made for a delicious snack.
Chocolate Manju
I am all about the sweets, and this next snack was a winner! This little chocolate cake had a deliciously soft and chewy exterior, while the inside was filled with a light, fluffy chocolate cream that was absolutely fantastic. I had never heard of Manju before, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it is a traditional Japanese steamed bun—and I loved it! While it was small, it was perfect for a quick snack. Just don't expect to share it! Hopefully, we'll get another one in a future box.
Puku Puku Pudding Taiyaki
The next treat I received was one I had tried before, but this version was even better! This fish-shaped wafer cracker had a sweet flavor and was filled with a light, fluffy chocolate-and-cream pudding filling. Both Charlie and I loved the embossed scales on the fish, and we found this snack to be both delicious and fun to eat. This subscription is seriously so much fun!
Twisty Cheese Bites
I was in the mood for a savory snack, and luckily, the next item was exactly that! Packed in a big bag, these twisty cheese bites were a fun and tasty surprise. Made from wheat and soy, these cute little curly snacks had a rich, cheesy flavor that was hard to resist. What made them especially unique was the combination of cheddar and Camembert cheese powders, which created a deliciously bold and distinctive taste. This was another standout snack that I'd be more than happy to receive again in a future box.
Camera Ramune Candy
This treat definitely wins the award for the best packaging! Housed in a little green box designed to look like an old disposable camera, it instantly brought me back to our wedding reception in 2007. The design was adorable, and the package even included instructions for pressing a button to eject a candy. Unfortunately, I couldn't quite figure out how it worked, so I opted to open the box and enjoy the candies that way instead.
The fruit-flavored jawbreakers inside were definitely meant to be savored rather than chewed—they were quite hard! The flavors were tasty, and both the kids and I really enjoyed them. As much as we liked the candy, I think we were just as obsessed with the cute packaging!
Mixed Juice Gummies
This next snack was another winner! Charlie is a huge fan of gummies, and these were a little fancier than the ones he's used to—which made them even more fun to try. Shaped like tiny layered Jell-O cubes, these gummies had a unique flavor that reminded me of a sophisticated fruit drink with subtle nutty and citrus notes.
We all loved them and appreciated that they came in a resealable package, although we didn't end up needing it because we gobbled them up in no time!
Pizza Pretzel Sticks
While gummies are usually Charlie's favorite, he was especially intrigued by this package of pizza pretzel sticks and couldn't wait to give them a try. Packaged in a long plastic container, they arrived in pristine condition and were absolutely delicious. While the pizza seasoning was subtle, it was definitely noticeable, and the combination of pizza flavor and crunchy pretzel was fantastic. These were a big hit with Charlie, and he'd definitely love to see them included in a future box!
Big Katsu
If you've read any of my previous reviews, you'll know that my kids are not fans of fishy snacks. This one actually looked pretty good, but they were still hesitant to try it. Instead, we shared it with a classmate, who said the flavor was great and the texture was unlike anything they had tried before—in a good way! Sharing is caring, right?
Kaki-pi Mix
The next item we received was definitely one of my favorites. I love a good snack mix, and this one was among the best. Packed with spicy rice crackers and peanuts, it had just the right amount of heat and was bursting with flavor. It was a little spicy, incredibly tasty, and hard to stop eating!
My only complaint was that the package was so small. Next time, I'm going to need a much bigger bag!
Napolitan Spaghetti
The final item we received was actually more of a meal than a snack! This month's box included a package of Napolitan spaghetti, featuring soft noodles and a rich tomato-based sauce. We haven't had a chance to try it yet, but since it doesn't contain any seafood, both of my kids are excited to give it a try after baseball tonight.
The picture on the package looks absolutely delicious, so I'll be sure to report back once we've had a chance to taste it!
The Verdict
As you may know, I have a lot of experience reviewing snack boxes—and after several months of receiving TokyoTreat, I can honestly say this is an amazing subscription and our absolute favorite of all time! After browsing the pamphlet, tasting all the snacks, and checking out the extra online offers, my family is beyond impressed. This month’s curation was a nice mix of sweet and savory snacks, and my kids really like everything except the Big Katsu! Overall, we were once again impressed by the variety and some of the best packaging we’ve seen in any snack box. We’re already looking forward to July's box and have our fingers crossed for more chocolate and individually wrapped candy fun! Any guesses on next month’s theme? Comment below!

To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, you are able to sign up to receive this particular box until 7/15.
Value Breakdown: For $37.50 + $12.50 shipping, you're receiving 13 different Japanese snacks. At about $3.85 a pack, this is a bit pricier than some American snacks, but because it is shipping from Japan and creates an entire experience, it's unlikely you could order these snacks separately for cheaper.
