What's Inside The Box
Sampling international wines from The International Wine of the Month Club has become a favorite ritual for me and my husband. This month, we received the 2020 Water Wheel The Estate and the 2020 Masserie Pizari Salento Rosso Negroamaro.
Here's what we thought of each!
Water Wheel The Estate 2020 - $19.25
This Australian beauty is an 86% Shiraz and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon blend, so you better be ready for a bold wine!
It had incredible depth to it, and certainly required a seasoned palate to enjoy it (that is, if you're not already a big fan of reds). Water Wheel The Estate required a bit of patience and intention to fully enjoy it—meaning it’s not a meek wine you can casually sip. And it delivered a powerful punch of ripe plum that commanded attention and left a lingering impression.
Overall, I enjoyed this wine, but it was a bit stronger than I anticipated. I'd give it a solid 4/5.
Masserie Pizari Salento Rosso Negroamaro 2020 - $19.75
What I enjoy most about this wine subscription is that you'll eventually encounter a grape varietal you've never tried before.
Masserie Pizari Salento Rosso Negroamaro 2020 presented as a delicate and enjoyable red, compared to the first selection. It was quite gentle and very easy to enjoy...my husband was lucky to be able to get a glass in, ha!
I found the hints of cherry to be the most dominant flavor, but could also detect the subtle herbal tones as well. I adored this wine and proudly rate it as a 5/5!
The Verdict
While I usually reach for Shiraz, the 2020 Masserie Pizari Salento Rosso Negroamaro stole the spotlight this time. Either way, my husband and I loved both bottles and can’t wait for our next box.
