First Impressions

I can’t believe I’m even writing this, but it’s almost August! I swear it was just the last day of school yesterday, and now here I am, clinging to the final days of summer break. Eek!! Things in the Peterson household haven’t slowed down one bit—but to add a little more excitement, we received the August TokyoTreat box! Packed with fifteen unique snacks straight from Japan, this fun-filled box was an absolute delight to open. With a bit of TokyoTreat experience under my belt, I can confidently say it’s one of the most exciting subscription boxes I’ve ever unboxed. I’m definitely a fan! Keep reading to see the delicious discoveries inside.
What's Inside the Box
To welcome us to TokyoTreat, we first received a cute polaroid type picture with a note from Ayumi, the TokyoTreat CEO. A sweet addition, I am already feeling like family! ❤️
Along with more than a dozen tasty snacks, Tokyo Treat also includes a colorful magazine packed with snack information, cultural information, trivia, facts, and contests! While exact nutritional information isn't shared, (it is on the package, but unless you know how to read Japanese, you're probably out of luck), the pamphlet does include if a food contains a common allergen, what it might contain traces of, and if it is suitable for vegetarians. A great summary of this month's box, my boys loved reading through this guide!
Chocolate Orange KitKats - Retail Value $8.00
Every TokyoTreat box I’ve received has included a large bag of specialty-flavored KitKat bars. It’s one of our favorite parts of the box — we’re huge KitKat fans — and this month’s flavor was chocolate orange. While this combo isn’t super outlandish, it’s definitely less common in the U.S. than in Japan, so I was excited to get my hands on it. It reminded me of the chocolate oranges my grandma Carol used to buy at Christmas — a delicious, wafery version of that nostalgic treat. Although the bars were a little melted thanks to the warm summer temps, this one was a hit with the whole family!
Mini Sugar Donuts
Mini donuts are one of my boys’ absolute favorite fair snacks, and this version was a perfect sneak peek of the upcoming fair season! While these mini treats weren’t piping hot like the fresh ones, they were still incredibly tasty. Covered in sugar, they were sweet, chewy, and oh sooo delish! Our whole family loved them — and we all wished the bag was bigger!
Orange Bar Gum
Gum is definitely another item my kids are obsessed with. This extra-sweet version had a sugary texture at first but chewed out to reveal a great citrus flavor. With two sticks included, it was definitely shareable. We split each stick in half and still had plenty of gum to enjoy. While the flavor didn’t last super long, it was a fun and tasty treat to try!
Don Don Yaki Cracker
After sampling quite a few sweet treats, the kids were ready for something a little more savory—and that’s exactly what we got. These Don Don Yaki Crackers were crispy, fun-shaped, and packed with umami flavor. They still had a slight sweetness to them, but the touch of salt made for a perfectly balanced and totally crave-worthy snack. The kids loved them, and so did I!
Ramune Gummies
Like I’ve mentioned time and time again, the boys love gummies. These Ramune gummies were a unique twist—somewhere between a jelly bean and a fruit snack. They had a bit of a fizzy flavor and were totally delish! While the flavor was a little unexpected at first, it quickly grew on me, and the kids thought they were extra fun. A great inclusion we hope to see more of in future boxes!
Honey Fried Rice Crackers
Next up were the Honey Fried Rice Crackers. These cute, firecracker-shaped snacks packed a sweet honey flavor that kept us coming back for more. Intriguing in texture, they were bite-sized, crunchy, and absolutely delicious. And the little party-goers on the packaging? Totally entertaining!
Soy Sauce Corn Puffs
The Soy Sauce Corn Puffs were a surprise hit in our house! Glazed with a savory blend of burnt soy sauce and a hint of butter, they had a rich, smoky flavor that was totally addictive. The light, airy crunch made them super easy to snack on—maybe a little too easy! They struck a great balance between salty and slightly sweet, which kept us reaching back into the bag. Overall, a fun and flavorful twist on a classic puffed snack!
Edamame Bites
The Edamame Bites packed a bold wasabi kick that definitely woke up our taste buds! I enjoyed the spicy, savory flavor, but the kids found them a bit too intense. They reminded us of Tow Mater’s “wasabi moment” in the Cars movie, which gave us all a good laugh. A fun and fiery snack for the more adventurous eaters in the house!
Kakigoori Jelly
The Kakigoori Jelly pouches were a fun and refreshing treat! With five flavors—melon, blue Hawaii, mango, lemon, and strawberry—they were inspired by classic Japanese shaved ice. We froze them before eating, which made them even more enjoyable on a hot summer day. The kids loved the fruity flavors and thought they were the perfect cool-down snack. This was definitely a hit in our house and felt like a mini summer festival in a pouch!
Strawberry Cotton Candy
The Strawberry Cotton Candy came in an adorable foil bag and looked like fluffy white cotton batting. It was sweet and flavorful, but a bit less intense than typical American cotton candy. Surprisingly, this milder version was even more delicious and enjoyable. Overall, it was a delightful treat that we all loved!
DIY Candy Apple
The DIY Candy Apple candy kit was definitely the most fun treat we received! It included apple-flavored candy syrup and colorful sprinkles that you dip the mini candies into using a cute little toothpick. The kids loved the hands-on experience and the chance to customize their own treats. With enough ingredients to make quite a few candy apples, it felt like a playful mix of fruit snacks, gushers, and gumdrops all rolled into one. It was a creative and tasty activity that kept everyone entertained!
Eggplant Miso Soup
I really appreciate when the TokyoTreat box includes a full lunch item, and the August box didn’t disappoint. This time, we received a cup of Eggplant Miso Soup. Just add hot water to the fill line, give it a stir, and enjoy a warm, steamy bowl! Since it's been in the upper 80s lately, we haven’t tried it yet. But it feels perfect for a cooler day—definitely something to look forward to as the seasons begin to change!
Strawberry Jelly Marshmallows
Marshmallows are one of Charlie’s all-time favorite treats, but he had never tried a jelly-filled version before! Ultra light and fluffy—seriously, like a cloud—these were the softest marshmallows I’ve ever felt. The little dollop of strawberry jelly inside added the perfect sweet touch. If we had any left, we’d love to try them in a s’more! (Un)fortunately, they were so tasty we ate them straight out of the package!
Matsuri Snack
The Master Snack was a flat, round, crispy cheese cracker with a bold and unique flavor. It had a rich, savory taste that stood out from the sweeter snacks in the box. Definitely a fun and flavorful surprise for cheese lovers!
Chocolate Cream Wafer Roll
The last item we received was this Chocolate Cream Wafer Roll. I love wafers, so this was a welcome treat. It was filled with a deliciously sweet chocolate cream that had everyone reaching for a bite. We were all a little sad there was only one roll included—it disappeared way too fast!
The Verdict
As you may know, I have a lot of experience reviewing snack boxes, and after more than a few months of receiving TokyoTreat, I can honestly say this is my favorite snack box of all time. After browsing through the pamphlet, tasting all of the snacks, and checking out the extra online offers, I am beyond impressed with this subscription. This month's curation was delish! The kids liked almost every item in the box, and ate everything, which is statically amazing! While the candle apple kit and cotton candy were the favorites, they enjoyed everything else as well. Overall, we were again very impressed with the variety and the best packaging we've ever experienced! We're already looking forward to September's box! Any ideas on next month's theme? Comment below!

To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, you are able to sign up to receive this particular box until 8/15.
Value Breakdown: For $37.50 + $12.50 shipping, you're receiving 15 different Japanese snacks. At about $3.33 a pack, this is a bit pricier than some American snacks, but because it is shipping from Japan and creates an entire experience, it's unlikely you could order these snacks separately for cheaper.
