Becca Peterson
ByBecca PetersonJun 17, 2025 | 0 comments

TokyoTreat is a monthly subscription box filled with candy and other tasty snacks that ship directly from Japan. Savory, sweet, salty—all the flavors given to you with authentic products you would find in a convenience store in Japan.

TokyoTreat ships monthly and includes full size premium products. With 12-17 treats in each box, they hit all of the flavor stops! More information about the snacks included can be found here.

This review is of the Premium Box which costs $37.50 a month + shipping.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

July is almost here, and I’m super excited — it’s one of my favorite months of the year! Not only is it my birthday month, but it’s also packed with exciting events, and I’m still enjoying summer vacation. Even with our busy schedule, the boys and I were thrilled to check out this month’s TokyoTreat box. Filled with thirteen unique snacks straight from Japan, this fun-filled box was an absolute delight to open! With a bit of TokyoTreat experience under my belt, I can confidently say it’s one of the most exciting subscription boxes I’ve ever unboxed. I’m definitely a fan! Keep reading to see the delicious discoveries inside.

What's Inside the Box

To welcome us to TokyoTreat, we first received a cute polaroid type picture with a note from Ayumi, the TokyoTreat CEO. A sweet addition, I am already feeling like family! ❤️

Along with more than a dozen tasty snacks, Tokyo Treat also includes a colorful magazine packed with snack information, cultural information, trivia, facts, and contests! While exact nutritional information isn't shared, (it is on the package, but unless you know how to read Japanese, you're probably out of luck), the pamphlet does include if a food contains a common allergen, what it might contain traces of, and if it is suitable for vegetarians. A great summary of this month's box, my boys loved reading through this guide!

Cookies & Cream KitKats - Retail Value $7.99

Every TokyoTreat box I’ve received has included a large bag of specialty-flavored KitKat bars. This is one of our favorite parts of the box — we’re huge KitKat fans — and this month’s flavor was especially exciting: cookies and cream! While the original KitKats are great, this version was even better. White with speckles of cookie, this chocolatey wafer snack was absolutely delicious. And with enough to share, you can bet these didn’t last long!

Fruity Fizz Gummies

Gummies are one of my boys' favorite snacks, so they were excited to try this fizzy Japanese version. Small and varying in shape and color, these gummies were chewy and packed with bold flavor. With notes of apple, grape, cola, and soda, we liked the fruity ones best, but thought the fizzy cola and soda flavors were pretty good too.

Salted Lemon Pretzel Sticks

Charlie was definitely intrigued when he saw the words "lemon and pretzel" on the box of this snack. While he was a bit apprehensive about trying these salted lemon pretzel sticks due to the unusual flavor combo, he quickly discovered that he actually enjoyed the subtle citrus twist! With two packages, there were plenty of sticks to go around, and my more mature palate really appreciated the unique flavor. Charlie thought they were interesting and liked the hint of pepper, while Hank thought they were gross. It was a fun way to experience something new, and I’m glad I gave them a try — plus, I’m happy to have extras on hand!

Kirby's Crazy Gum Mix

Back in the 1900s, Kirby was one of the few games I had for my Game Boy, so the inclusion of Kirby gum felt especially nostalgic. The resealable pouch featured five different flavors: apple, orange, muscat grape, cola, and soda. It even suggested mixing and matching the gum balls for surprise flavor combos — and the kids absolutely loved that! Chewy, sweet, and just the right texture, this gum was a fantastic addition to the box and was unsurprisingly gobbled up in no time.

Happy Harajuku Choco Cake

The next item we received was a set of soft, chocolate-coated sponge cakes. These little cakes were moist, chewy, and deliciously sweet. Similar in texture to a Swiss Cake Roll, they made for the perfect bite-sized dessert after a particularly heavy meal. I’d be happy to receive these again!

Garlic Potato Chips

So far, the July box has been pretty heavy on sweets, so we were excited to try something a little more savory. This large bag of garlic potato chips was spot-on in terms of flavor, texture, and crunch. Similar to Lay’s potato chips, this Japanese version seemed a bit thicker and more flavorful. My kids were obsessed with the bold garlic taste and absolutely loved the evil-looking bat chip on the packaging. Overall, these were a 10/10!

Mega Marshmallow Stick

I'll be honest — our family usually tests out the snacks in order using the booklet, but this month, the kids just had to try the Mega Marshmallow Stick first. While we’ve purchased similar items from stores like T.J. Maxx in the past, this version was noticeably fresher and softer than any marshmallow treat we’ve tried before. Featuring a cute marshmallow-shaped sheep on top and rainbow-striped and white marshmallows down the stick, it was the ultimate sweet treat. It tasted like a classic marshmallow with a little extra flair, and my kids were obsessed — they had a hard time sharing this fun snack equally!

Crunchy Cheese Puffs

Back to the savory side of things, we received a small package of crunchy cheese puffs. These disc-shaped puffs were crunchy, rich, and cheesy! While not quite as bold in flavor as some of the other snacks we’ve tried, the kids enjoyed the mellow taste and gobbled them up pretty quickly. I’d say they’re comparable to American puff corn, and I really enjoyed the cheesy flavor!

Simply Sweet DIY Ice Cream

The next item we received was something I had never experienced before — even with all my snack subscription experience! This "Simply Sweet DIY Ice Cream" kit came with three mini cones and a pouch of powder. When mixed with two spoonfuls of water, the powder turns into a sweet foam that you spoon into the cones to make tiny "ice creams." Strawberry-flavored, the boys decided to give it a try after a dip in the pool. They quickly realized it didn’t quite resemble real ice cream — the foam was sweet, but neither of them was particularly impressed, and they let me have the last cone. I didn’t think it was terrible, but I’d definitely prefer a real scoop of strawberry ice cream on a waffle cone. Still, it was a fun experience to try!

Super Sour Chewing Candy

Charlie is all about sour snacks, so he was intrigued when we came across this stick of super sour chewing candy. Powered by Monster energy and the fizz of sour soda, it was definitely sour — but not in an overwhelming, "make-you-drool" kind of way. Sweet and tart, it had a nice balance and reminded me of a taffy rope with a fizzy twist. Overall, I really enjoyed this treat, and so did both of my kids.

Seafood & Vegetable Dashi Ramen

My kids really enjoy ramen noodles, so they were excited to see a new variety in this month’s box. With a seafood and vegetable flavor, they asked if we could save it for lunch this week. Perfect with additions like eggs, ham, and veggies, it makes for an easy and satisfying meal — and it’s definitely best when it’s authentic!

Fabulous Fried Rice Crackers

The Fabulous Fried Rice Crackers were another satisfying savory snack packed with bold texture and flavor. Each bite delivered a crispy crunch, complemented perfectly by chunks of peanuts for added richness. The balance of salty and nutty made them sort of addictive! While not a standout in this snack box when compared with the marshmallow and sweet treats, these were darn good!

Twisty Corn Bites

The last item I received was a package of Twisty Corn Bites. These little fun-shaped snacks had a chicken flavor that reminded me of the "Chicken in a Biscuit" crackers, but with a more interesting texture! The kids really liked them and thought the packaging was much more amusing than what we have in the U.S.

The Verdict

As you may know, I have a lot of experience reviewing snack boxes, and after more than a few months of receiving TokyoTreat, I can honestly say this is my favorite snack box of all time. After browsing through the pamphlet, tasting all of the snacks, and checking out the extra online offers, I am beyond impressed with this subscription. This month's curation was AMAZING! Seriously, the kids absolutely loved almost everything in the box, and actually ate everything! While the marshmallow stick was the definite winner, they also loved the KitKat bars, gummies, and gum. Overall, we were again very impressed with the variety and the best packaging we've ever experienced! We're already looking forward to August's box! Any ideas on next month's theme? Comment below!

Value Breakdown: For $37.50 + $12.50 shipping, you're receiving 13 different Japanese snacks. At about $3.84 a pack, this is a bit pricier than some American snacks, but because it is shipping from Japan and creates an entire experience, it's unlikely you could order these snacks separately for cheaper.
