Universal Yums Review: “Ukraine” March 2024

Universal Yums is a snack subscription box that sends out snacks and candies from a different country each month. The contents of the boxes change each month as they highlight the best snacks from each featured country, but you can always expect a mix of flavors: salty, sweet, spicy, fruity, and more. Only authentic snacks from the featured country are included in this box. Choose from the Yum Box starting at $16.00 per month, the Yum Yum Box starting at $26.00 per month, or the Super Yum Box starting at $41.00 per month (with an annual commitment).

This review is of the Yum Yum box.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

March is here, and with it comes sunnier temps and a busy, busy, busy schedule! With spring break coming up in a few weeks, our moods are extra peppy already, but they increased even more when we found the Universal Yums box sitting on our doorstep! Because of the lack of snow, our typical winter events are out, so this was a great activity for a Tuesday afternoon. Not only are the treats delicious, but the pamphlet is educational too. Read below to find out what we discovered this month.

What's Inside the Box

With every month of Universal Yums, we receive a fun, illustrated map that shows where our Yums are coming from. This month, our brightly colored map depicts Ukraine with a variety of trivia. The backside hosts the usual Yum Scoreboard and scavenger hunt. Also included in this box is a lovely pamphlet that guides you through each country via trivia, recipes, photography, and activities. Not only is this box tasty, but it's educational as well!

Homemade Bread Chips with Adjika - Buy a single pack for $2.50

This month was very sweet heavy, but started out savory with a package of homemade bread chips flavored with adjika. This seasoning is made with carrots, tomatoes, garlic, chili pepper, and has a delicious savory taste. These rye chips are very crunchy, and remind me of an extra salty Gardetto with a little bit of a spicier flavor. Great for salads, on soup, or even paired with meat, these chips are a nice little crispy snack. Overall, I enjoyed these, but my kids thought they were a little boring to start of this box.

Golden Chips Wasabi

The second item we received was the last of the savory items. These spice-heavy, rectangular chips are extremely thin and broke very easily. With green wasabi flavoring, these salty chips are a little spicy, but not crazy hot. I enjoyed the very nice balance of these chips and was intrigued by the wasabi flavoring as I don't have a lot of experience with this spice, as I've been a little too scared to try it otherwise! Though they were a little broken up, these chips were really tasty, and a treat my family really enjoyed.

Sponge Cake with Condensed Milk - Buy a single pack for $1.00

The first sweet snack we received was this condensed milk cream layer cake. Beautiful in design, this baked good looks very pretty on the top, while extra yummy because of the layer of cream in the middle. Soft and chewy in texture, this cake was light and delicious - one that my entire family enjoyed.

Crostata with Black Currant - Buy a single pack for $0.90

How cute is this mini pie?! While I haven't had much experience with black currant flavoring, this little jam filled pie was very tasty! Sweet and flavorful with a crumbly cookie crust, this little pie was not only good to eat, but very pretty. This was a little more savory and more old-fashioned tasting than some of the other snacks, but was a great inclusion for this month's box.

Choco Shocks - Buy a single pack for $0.80

If you have read any of my reviews, you'll know that wafer snacks are my favorite. This particular version is chocolatey and filled with cookies and cream. Crunchy, light, and delicious, this wafer is fantastic. With four squares of easy to break pieces, this bar is slightly similar to a Ferrero Rocher but with a cookie flavoring. My kids absolutely loved this chocolate bar, as did my husband and I. We have already added a few of these in our Yum cart.

Chewing Sweets

This treat was the one that I deemed "most unusual". Tasting just like bubblegum, but textured like taffy, I wasn't quite sure what to do with this treat. While the flavor was fine, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to chew it like gum, or savor it then swallow it. Larger in size than a normal stick of gum, or taffy, this was a pretty big treat and my kids thought it was kind of fun.

Trisitron Glazed Sweets - Buy a single pack for $10.90

We love individual candies, and this month, Universal Yums sent four chocolatey bites with creamy lemon filling. While I'm not a huge fan of the lemon/chocolate combo, these treats were okay in a different sort of way. The dark chocolate shell added a bit of flair to the lemon filling, that was a bit on the sour side. I thought these candies were okay, but my kids weren't a fan of the "mature" flavor combo. What did you think about these glazed sweets?

Bonny Fruit Summer Mix - Buy a single pack for $4.20

My grandma used to have orange slices on the table at any given time, so seeing this large bag of fruit summer mix was quite nostalgic for me. Featuring fruit jellies with fancy flavors like pear, apricot, strawberry, and cherry, these are a little more sophisticated than the stale fruit flavors I remember my grandma having. Covered in sugar and extra soft and chewy, the flavors really reflect the natural flavor of the desired fruits, and the coordinating shapes present extra nicely. These were definitely a hit with our entire family!

Delica Rolls with Baked Milk Flavor - Buy a single pack for $3.60

The next item we received was this large package of Delicia Rolls with Baked Milk Flavor. When I read the package, I didn't quite know what to expect, but boy was I surprised. Now you know I like wafers, but these milk wafers are ammmmazing! With an almost caramel like cream filling, these are irresistible. The soft wafer melts in your mouth, and I couldn't get enough of them. Were they a bit crumbly and messy? Yes they were, but oh my goodness, the flavor was perfection!

Roshen Bubble Caramel Chocolate

I've had a little experience with Bubble chocolate bars, but not the caramel chocolate version. This chocolate is very interesting because it's incredibly light. Created with bubbles for an aerated experience, this chocolate melts in your mouth, and the caramel flavoring is similar to the milk flavor rolls above. The size of this bar is impressive, and it offered many opportunities for snacking, which my entire family enjoyed.

Polus Big Bar - Buy a single pack for $1.40

The last item we received this month was my second favorite. Again, the wafer is the winner! Featuring eleven layers of dark chocolate and almond wafer, this bar was huge and delicious. Very similar to a Ferrero Rosher (can you guess my favorite candy?), this bar was large and in charge, while being crispy, chocolatey, and nutty. Yum, Yum, Yum!!!!

The Verdict

Universal Yums is one of our very favorite subscriptions. Our family looks forward to receiving this box each and every month, and are always surprised by the contents. This month was pretty heavy on the sweet side, but because of my sweet tooth, I didn't mind. Overall, the flavors were unique, tasty, and fun! We already can't wait to see where we are headed in April! Any ideas?
