This review is of the Book Club for ages 2-4 years.

This box was sent to us at no cost to review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Opening The Box

Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box. Packed snugly inside are the book(s) of the month, a welcome note and activity, and a bookmark with discussion questions listed on the front and back.

Here's What's Inside

Welcome Note & Activity

For November we are sent a magical book by Michaela Goode, who is an author and illustrator from the Tlingit Nation. Those of us who weren't familiar with her are introduced here to her second picture book, and given an intro to the intergenerational berry harvesting tradition that is depicted in the book. It's also an opportunity to have conversations with your child about indigenous rights and respect. The activity on the back uses actual photos of children to guide us on a nature walk and have gratitude for all that's around us.

Berry Song by Michaela Goode — Retail Value $18.99

Found on sale for $16.99

This month's book is like walking through a wonderful dream. I've never quite seen illustrations used so evocatively in a children's book, but here Good uses a sort of zooming-in and zooming-out of pictures to weave us through the adventure that is berry picking with this child and grandparent. The storyline is peaceful, and throughout is woven a song about berries—there are no music notes anywhere in the book to indicate how the song or chant should sound, so we came up with our own. We learned a ton of new types of berries to look into within the pages of this book!

I will say that this book seemed a little mature for our two-year-old (lots of words), but that our five-year-old really connected with it.

Discussion Questions

Little Feminist always provides a bookmark filled with discussion questions for each book included in the box. Some are conceptual, and others ask the child to recall themes or events from the book.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

Value Breakdown: Little Feminist Book Club costs $25.90 per month, which includes the cost of shipping. For November we were sent one book that retails $18.99 at full price, or $16.99 on Amazon. That's typical value for this subcription.

Of note: Little Feminist offers four ways to purchase: monthly, three months, six months, and 12 months. They cost $22.95, $21.95, $19.95, and $18.95, respectively. Shipping is always $2.95. So if you were certain you'd like this subscription for a year, it would be $4 cheaper per month and much closer to the book's retail value.

Key Takeaways

We loved exploring the berry-picking tradition of child and grandmother in Berry Song, and enjoyed learning about new types of berries. Learning about other cultures through literacy is so powerful for young people and their adults alike.

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.
