When you sign up, there’s a quiz to determine your preferences and interests, and then you’re matched with a new themed box every month. First Impressions

Bespoke Post almost always has a good presentation. They have a different, perfect-sized box – or bag – for everything.

Inside the Bespoke Post "Checkmate" Box

Paintwork Classic Chess Set - Retail Price $69

The greatest game ever made. I have a soft spot for chess. You can tell a lot about someone playing against them. This is a very classic set from Paintworks. This design features wooden pieces, a board with a thin layer of acrylic for a reflective effect, and a high-quality art paper box with a black and silver foil stamp. It also includes easy-to-read instructions in several languages. Bespoke Post offers black and white or green and beige. The official site offers others. I think if I could do it over again, I'd go with the green and beige. It measures 9.8 inches squared. It's light weight without being flimsy. Everything packs tight into a nice box, which travels well. All in all, a great chess set.

50-Game Chess Scorebook - Retail Price $3.50

If you really want to go in-depth, record your moves in this smart-looking, nicely-printed scorebook. This is designed for tournaments, clubs, and personal game analysis. You can record detailed game particulars for 50 games or 100 moves per page with special position diagrams. It looks nice and professional. Personally, I have never recorded a game. In fact, I try not to even remember the matches I lose.

Verdict

I jumped right on this offer from Bespoke Post. I'm a sucker for a nice chess set and now I don't see me needing another any time soon. This is a nice middle ground between a big home set and a dinky travel one. It's been a while since I've played, but I already set up a match this weekend. The scorebook was an excellent add-on, even if it will go unused by me. Overall, I'm very happy with this month's offering. I can't wait to play.

Let's Talk About Value

This box clocks in at around $72.50. That's a little expensive for a small chess set, but a great value for the cost of this subscription ($54 including shipping). I like the additional throw-in of the notepad: useful and valuable. With the money saved, maybe I could buy one of those clock timers.

To Wrap Up

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, the "Checkmate" is available at the time of this post. If you ever do miss out on something though, be sure to check back, because boxes usually return or there are similar items.

Unfortunately those chess pieces are low quality. The king has multiple visible flaws. They look cheap and light even from a distance. Of course you can still play with them, but usually pieces with these types of flaws are also too light which can be annoying. This is not what a $50 chess set looks like.

I like the set, but agree it doesn’t meet its price range. Thanks for commenting.
