Plus, you will also receive hands-on activities and tools to help your book come to life. Subscriptions are offered for ages 0-2, 2-4, 4-7, and 7-9. From Little Feminist:

This children's book subscription sends books that highlight lesser-represented characters and teaches important life lessons with beauty and nuance.

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

This review is of the Book Club for ages 2-4 years.

This box was sent to us at no cost to review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Opening The Box

Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box. Packed snugly inside are the book(s) of the month, a welcome note and activity, and a bookmark with discussion questions listed on the front and back.

Here's What's Inside

Welcome Note & Activity

Our welcome note introduces the book of the month and calls our attention to some concepts we can keep an eye out for as we read to our child. This month we're reminded that the Jewish holidays Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are coming up, which represent the start of the Jewish New Year. The welcome note suggests that it's a good time for all to reflect on the year, and the book included shows some sweet examples of how. On the reverse side, the activity introduces non-standard units of measurement. It sets us up to determine how many books, stuffies, plants, or toys it takes to measure our child's hand or foot. We measured our whole bodies.

Measuring a Year: A Rosh Hashanah Story by Linda Elovitz Marshall (Author), Zara González Hoang (Illustrator) — Retail Value $16.99

The illustrations of children measuring their year by progress, achievements, collections, and objects are incredibly sweet, and truth be told, it's not evident that this book is in celebration of Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur until the end. There are some small indications by way of the family objects shown, but given the diverse representation in LF books across the board, this could just as easily have been non-story-progressing details. Our family is not Jewish and we don't tend to celebrate Jewish holidays, but we have some close friends who are and do, and it feels fun and supportive to better understand how to celebrate alongside them.

I love a book that has built-in discussion questions! Here's a peek at the ones in this book.

Discussion Questions

And, Little Feminist always provides a bookmark filled with discussion questions for each book included in the box. Some are conceptual, and others ask the child to recall themes or events from the book.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

Value Breakdown: Little Feminist Book Club costs $25.90 per month, which includes the cost of shipping. Our August book costs $15.99, which surprised me, as I've come to learn through this subscription that most hardback picture books cost $17.99 or $18.99. Regardless, this value is typical of this subscription.

Of note: Little Feminist offers four ways to purchase: monthly, three months, six months, and 12 months. They cost $22.95, $21.95, $19.95, and $18.95, respectively. Shipping is always $2.95. So if you were certain you'd like this subscription for a year, it would be $4 cheaper per month and much closer to the book's retail value.

Key Takeaways

Our family's favorite part about this book was the illustrations. The children are so sweet and doing such cute, interesting activities as units of measurement. It was also nice to have an opportunity to learn a little more about the culture around the Jewish New Year holidays. We enjoyed this read!

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.
